Boston making better moves then Yankees. Really???

People have been saying the Yankees should be worrying about their and our hated rival the Red Sox. I don't see how adding Lackey and Cameron compares to Nick Johnson and Curtis Granderson. Here's why I don't think the Sox made better moves then the Yanks........

Star-divide

So the Red Sox add P John Lackey to their called bolstered rotation. Beckett wasn't the same pitcher last year and slumped down the line. John Lester I think is there true number 1. I think if Lackey is your 3rd pitcher thats pretty good. But the Yankees rotaton seems that much better with CC, AJ, Andy, and Joba/ Hughes. You would think Cash would add another pitcher like a Ben Sheets if his agent lowers his price.

But adding Mike Cameron isn't like adding a Curtis Granderson to your team. He's a strikeout batter like Grandy but Curtis is better much better... Red Sox sign John Lackey and Mike Cameron and the Yankees add Curtis Granderson and soon to be Nick Johnson. Now what about Holliday? Does this open a door for Matt Holiday in LF? Probably not with his price but he did say he would love to be a Yankee and his dads a Yankee fan. If the Yanks add Holliday I can't see how Boston has made better moves the NY. Let's compare the teams now.....

Boston Pitching- Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Dice-K, Bucholtz

Yankees Pitching- Sabathia, Burnett, Pettite, Joba/ Hughes, TBD

Boston lineup-

Ellsbury, Pedroia, Ortiz, Youkilis, TBD, Lowell, Scutaro, Cameron, Varitek

Yankees-

Jeter, Johnson, Teixera, A-Rod, Cano, Granderson, Posada, Swisher, Cabrera

I don't see the Red Sox being better then the Yankees as of right now.

But what do you think?

The Sox

gained Lackey, Scutaro, and Cameron, while losing Jason Bay and a few scrub infielders.

The Yankees gained Granderson and Johnson while losing Damon and Matsui.

Boston is definitely better than they were last year, but they still aren’t as good on paper as the Yankees. Definitely not if we add Sheets.

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

Who are these "people" that said this?

I hereby predict John Lackey will be a bust in Beantown. His numbers at Fenway and vs the Yankees suck as well.

And Mike Cameron is an ok addition, but wupoodeedoooo!!!!

They ain’t f****n wit us in 2010,please believe that.

Anybody in the mood for a repeat?

I don't think they're done yet...

But right now it’s definitely not a classic Red Sox lineup.

Ellsbury-Pedroia-VMart-Ortiz-Youkilis-Drew-Lowell-Varitek-Scutaro.
Not bad by any means but not what you’re used to from them.

Still you have to give them credit for their rotation. C.C.’s the best starter in the rivalry, but Beckett, Lester and Lackey are 2, 3 and 4.

Is Youkilis playing LF in your lineup?

Yeah my mistake...

I left out Cameron. It would be more like Ellsbury-Pedroia-VMart-Ortiz-Youkilis-Drew-Cameron-Lowell-Scutaro with Lowell and Varitek taking turns being in the lineup.

The Red Sox got better...

yes, they did.

Did they make better moves than the Yankees? …well, compared to AJ Burnett…yea, Lackey’s a better signing.

But THIS SEASON?…no, they didn’t.

Granderson and Johnson are making pennies compared to their departed former selves (at least…Damon’s departed for now).

The Yanks haven’t spend much, have gotten younger..and essentially improved the defense and possibly IMPROVED the overall offense (possibly…they possibly got worse tho..)

The Yanks aren’t done tho. The Pissants may nto be done either…but I know the Yankees aren’t done

I would say,

That your defense improved, but your offense did not. It’s probably best to wait until spring training before evaluating the off-season as a whole…

The Sox are better now

but the Yanks aren’t done and the Yanks are still the better team. They are the World Champions, and the team to beat. Thats the bottom line.

Tyler Keppner of the NY times

says that Damon came back to the Yanks late Thursday and asked for two years and $20MM, however by that point the team had agreed to a deal with Johnson and there was no going back. Why is there no going back? This makes us better at a reasonable rate and yrs.Yanks want him to sign for 2 at 14 million

I agree 100%

I don’t understand how Johnny’s off the table now.

He’s still got enough left in the tank to play LF.

thank you Boston

It is truly amazing that most seem to believe that Boston has done such a fantastic job this winter. Boston is still trying desperately to unload Lowell and have not found a suitable replacement. First base or third base have huge question marks. Look at additions, Lacky has not posted a 15 win season yet. Always seems to be hurt and always under 25 starts a year. Cammeron well he is a good player but, is an old player as well. They seem to be done. No more interest in Bay or Holliday. Scurato had a good year last year but was his first as an everyday player. Can he keep it up under the pressure of playing in Boston? Last couple of years Beckett has had injury issues. He is older, maybe, probable more of the same?

Yes they might have one of the best rotations in baseball but seem bound and determined to trade their hot young studs, Clay Bucholtz. and or Pedroia . Will this not destroy their future rotation and starting line up ? What will they have to pay Beckett to remain a Red Sox in 2011? As far as Red Sox’s go seem to be a lot of unanswered questions. 2010 for Boston is nothing more then ?????????

Lackey

He has won over 15 games, although only once – he was 19-9 in 2007. Still wins are more about luck. He’s made more than 25 starts in 6 of his 7 full seasons in the majors. He also hasn’t had an ERA over 3.83 since 2004. Don’t belittle the guy, he’s a top 20 pitcher in the game (which they now have 3 of) and the price they paid for him wasn’t outlandish.

they're not trading Pedroia.

Don’t start making stuff up now.

Buccholz, they would’ve traded already to get Adrian Gonzalez…but they’re trying their best to hold onto him, like they should.

Buchholz is what Joba and Hughes should/could be. If the Yanks don’t trade the potential types..why would the Red Sox trade someone who’s already there?

i they really wanted

AGon, they’d HAVE to move Buchholz. Lester, Beckett, Lackey is a very good top 3. their offense is the problem. to get a great 1b-man, in his prime, with a cheap contract, they’d have to give up a considerable amount.

by Travis G on Dec 19, 2009 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

Well for one.

You fail to account for the fact that you gave up prospects to get Granderson. Also Nick Johnson, really, Nick Johnson? He’s so injury prone.

Mike Cameron > Nick Johnson (Just because of defense, plus their WAR’s aren’t even close.)

John Lackey and Scutaro > Granderson (only if you account for the loss in prospects, granderson is much younger, and cheaper, but pitching tends to be harder to come by.)

Not to mention we make up for the draft picks lost for signing Lackey and Scutaro. By losing two Grade A free agents in Wagner and Bay.

That being said, we also lost Wagner and Bay.

We’ve had the better offseason, you guys still have the better team…. maybe haha.
