New York Yankee notes: Matsui, and a little hot stove stuff
Morning, New York Yankees fans! Here are a few stories to help keep you warm and cozy by your computer on a very cold day here in the Northeast.
- The Los Angeles Angels introduced Hideki Matsui yesterday, and received the full Matsui treatment with an overwhelming throng of Japanese media on hand.
- The Yankees are "looking at the entire market" for starting pitching depth, corner outfielder and designated hitters, according to GM Brian Cashman. Over at Confessions of a She Fan, Jane Heller is dreaming much bigger about ways to fill her New York Yankee Christmas stocking. Her ideas will never come to fruition, but you have to like her style.
- Over at This Purist Bleeds Pinstripes they are wondering what John Sterling will come up with for a Curtis Granderson home run call. My money is on "A Dandy from Grandy."
- Speaking of Granderson, he was knows for his work in the community while a member of the Detroit Tigers. Wednesday he took his first step toward bringing some of that work to New York City.
- Over at Talking Chop, SBN's Atlanta Braves blog, they are pushing the idea of a Derek Lowe for Nick Swisher trade. All I can say to that is, no thanks. The Yanks have already jettisoned one outfielder, maybe two if Johnny Damon doesn't come back. Besides, I don't want Lowe and his gargantuan contract, anyway.

Melky for Lowe, or Swisher for Lowe and a hitting prospect (and really, all that’s left of Atlanta’s farm system is Jason Heyward, and he’s not moving).
Trading Swisher makes the lineup too thin.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Not unless...
The hitting prospect was Jason Heyward – that might be worth enduring Lowe’s 5.50 ERA in the AL East for the next 3 years.

He's a better prospect then Montero (#1 to Montero's #3)
so..yea, why not!

Swish for Lowe would be a steal!
Lowe would be a steal if it were only swish or Melky, but i would rather trade swish.
ok, just saw it lol
I don’t think they should trade him this year, though. There aren’t any decent RF’s on the market, and it doesn’t make sense financially to get rid of a guy making 5M for a slightly above average pitcher that makes 15M, which would then force us to sign 2 of the OF’s on the market who want 13-18M.
Swisher may not be an elite player, but he is a good hitter and a decent fielder who is signed for really cheap. Having a cheap player like him on the team allows us to spend more money in areas like starting pitching or LF.
This is why I'd rather trade Melky for Lowe...
Swisher is not atrocious in RF, and a defensive OF of Holliday (potentially of course), Grandy and Swish would be at the very worst above average.
And at the plate? Should we sign Nick Johnson?
Jeter
Johnson
Tex
A-Rod
Holliday
Posada
Grandy—
Swisher
Cano
…for real?
Feel free to catch some sand in the vag on my 5-7 order of hitters…but damn!?
Robinson Cano…the #9 hitter?

Absolutely ;)
If it happens I’ll put a link to this comment in my sig for the season.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Crazy
This is absolutely crazy. Although I said to my dad last year (2008) during the season. If the Yanks sign Burnett, CC and Teixeira they will win it all next year. He laughed at me and said I was nuts. I’m calling you, FreeBradshaw, crazy but I love that lineup. I hope it happens!
I liked Melky for Swisher....
Lowe for Swisher is unacceptable.
They gotta either get more out of that trade…or they bettter be promising Matt Holliday or something.
No Damon, Matsui and Swisher? That’s over 80 HR gone.
No…can’t do that.
Melky for Lowe…or PISS OFF to that deal. Trade Swisher if you must, but they better be getting back a better pitcher…and signing TWO of Damon/Bay/Holliday.

Your right.
They should get more than just Lowe, and i think they could. The braves are dying to trade him. Also Granderson adds 30+ and I think we are going to sign Holliday. Or at least i wouldn’t be surprised. I think the Cardinals offered him what he wanted in terms of years and money and he still didn’t sign so….we’ll see.
If we did trade Swisha nd signed Granderson and Holliday, well that would close to even out Matsui, Damon and Swish. But, we will see wont we.
well....
there’s still a gaping hole at DH…but if they sign Nick Johnson, that’s pretty good.
I think Johnson could thrive as a DH. He’s a perfect fit for the Yanks’ offense.

Nick could do well with the Yanks
At first I thought against it, but seeing his OBP above .400 and he doesn’t strike out a lot, that he could very well strive in the pinstripes. That line up would look good!
Jeter
Johnson
Tex
Arod
Holliday
Posada
Granderson
Cano
and of course
GARDNER!!!!(or Melky)
see above....
sub out the 4th OF in this..
put Swisher in there, who actually produces at the plate.
Boom. Production. Ridiculous production.

I'd roll with that.
From what I heard on the proposed Lowe deal (I’m leaning toward it being BS anyway…but still) it said that the Braves eat a bunch of his salary, so that’s not a big deal (Ed..)

Nick might work
takes a lot of pitches – efficient
no pressure on him in this lineup
good glove at first
but
he is slow
he really is not a DH level hitter power wise
he might get hurt even if he is NOT on the field
if you replace Damon with Melky, and
Matsui with Nick
you weaken the offense – put more pressure on the infielders
The Yankees are trying to keep the payroll lower
There is no way they are signing Holliday, so give that one up. As far as Lowe goes, I dont think the Yanks would have to give up more than a prospect for him, the Braves just want out of the contract. I wouldnt be thrilled taking on Lowe with that contract, but Sheets wants 13 mil a year and is a ?, so perhaps Lowe will be a Yankee.
Sterling
Ed, I was wondering the same thing when the Granderson deal was announced. I like “a dandy from Grandy.” But think of the fun Sterling could have with a bases-loaded dinger from Curtis. A grandy slam? The possibilities are endless.
And nothing is impossible when you're the Yankees!
I don’t believe that we will get Holliday, but I would not be surprised. As stated above, we still have 20-25 minimum to work with.
Don’t believe the hype about lowering payroll, that is just talk for the agents to ponder or other GMs. The yanks will have the same payroll as last year, and if it isn’t, it will be awfully close.
Not true
Cashman is trying to bring the Yankees back to the pack. They dont want a payroll that is 70 million more than the next team. Last years payroll was less than 08, and the goal is for this years to be lower than 09.

What?!?!?
They make tons of money and they spend that. So you actually think that we are going to spend less, or significantly less, not a chance.
What’s the red sox payroll right now? Around 150 -160 mil. They may even pay luxury tax this year.
So we are going to be what, just 10 mil over there’s? Not a chance.
Cashman has stated many times in many interviews
they are trying to reduce payroll. They are trying to get away from the all star at every position. Why do you think he didnt get Halladay or Johan Santana? Because he is trying to hold on to prospects, he is trying to build from within. The Grandy deal was a no brainer, that contract for a proven CF was to good to pass up. The last Yankee dynasty was not due to signing every big name free agent, it was due to guys the Yankees developed from within.
by YankeesJets on Dec 17, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions
OK, that is great and I love the idea of working from within, but
they do have some money to spend, and they will. The payroll will be around 190 mil this year or more, and again , i don’t believe them until i see it.
F*ck Derek Lowe
Why trade a good relatively young OF when we could sign Sheets for a 1 year deal?
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
true...
but isn’t Lowe more of a sure thing to contribute and stay healthy?
I see him more like Pettite.
Sheets…more like Brad Penny (of course..he’s a lot better if he’s healthy…but who knows if Sheets will be throwing 97mph darts anymore?)
