New York Yankee notes: Matsui, and a little hot stove stuff
Morning, New York Yankees fans! Here are a few stories to help keep you warm and cozy by your computer on a very cold day here in the Northeast.
- The Los Angeles Angels introduced Hideki Matsui yesterday, and received the full Matsui treatment with an overwhelming throng of Japanese media on hand.
- The Yankees are "looking at the entire market" for starting pitching depth, corner outfielder and designated hitters, according to GM Brian Cashman. Over at Confessions of a She Fan, Jane Heller is dreaming much bigger about ways to fill her New York Yankee Christmas stocking. Her ideas will never come to fruition, but you have to like her style.
- Over at This Purist Bleeds Pinstripes they are wondering what John Sterling will come up with for a Curtis Granderson home run call. My money is on "A Dandy from Grandy."
- Speaking of Granderson, he was knows for his work in the community while a member of the Detroit Tigers. Wednesday he took his first step toward bringing some of that work to New York City.
- Over at Talking Chop, SBN's Atlanta Braves blog, they are pushing the idea of a Derek Lowe for Nick Swisher trade. All I can say to that is, no thanks. The Yanks have already jettisoned one outfielder, maybe two if Johnny Damon doesn't come back. Besides, I don't want Lowe and his gargantuan contract, anyway.

Melky for Lowe, or Swisher for Lowe and a hitting prospect (and really, all that’s left of Atlanta’s farm system is Jason Heyward, and he’s not moving).
Trading Swisher makes the lineup too thin.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Not unless...
The hitting prospect was Jason Heyward – that might be worth enduring Lowe’s 5.50 ERA in the AL East for the next 3 years.

He's a better prospect then Montero (#1 to Montero's #3)
so..yea, why not!

I liked Melky for Swisher....
Lowe for Swisher is unacceptable.
They gotta either get more out of that trade…or they bettter be promising Matt Holliday or something.
No Damon, Matsui and Swisher? That’s over 80 HR gone.
No…can’t do that.
Melky for Lowe…or PISS OFF to that deal. Trade Swisher if you must, but they better be getting back a better pitcher…and signing TWO of Damon/Bay/Holliday.

Nick might work
takes a lot of pitches – efficient
no pressure on him in this lineup
good glove at first
but
he is slow
he really is not a DH level hitter power wise
he might get hurt even if he is NOT on the field
if you replace Damon with Melky, and
Matsui with Nick
you weaken the offense – put more pressure on the infielders
The Yankees are trying to keep the payroll lower
There is no way they are signing Holliday, so give that one up. As far as Lowe goes, I dont think the Yanks would have to give up more than a prospect for him, the Braves just want out of the contract. I wouldnt be thrilled taking on Lowe with that contract, but Sheets wants 13 mil a year and is a ?, so perhaps Lowe will be a Yankee.
Sterling
Ed, I was wondering the same thing when the Granderson deal was announced. I like “a dandy from Grandy.” But think of the fun Sterling could have with a bases-loaded dinger from Curtis. A grandy slam? The possibilities are endless.
F*ck Derek Lowe
Why trade a good relatively young OF when we could sign Sheets for a 1 year deal?
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.
true...
but isn’t Lowe more of a sure thing to contribute and stay healthy?
I see him more like Pettite.
Sheets…more like Brad Penny (of course..he’s a lot better if he’s healthy…but who knows if Sheets will be throwing 97mph darts anymore?)
