How I Would Handle the Wood
I know it's December. I know the offseason isn't over. I know that there have already been 370 projected starting lineups for 2010. Here are my thoughts anyway.
My opinions: Holliday is to be too expensive, Bay can't hit sliders. If I were a bettin' man, I'd put it at about 60% odds that we see Johnny Damon back in the Bronx, probably with a 2 year deal (with a 1 year player option because Scott Boras is his agent). As such, I've thought up a possible starting lineup that includes Johnny. If that doesn't happen, we get to roundly mock Omar Minaya for giving him a 4 year deal.
1. Derek Jeter - (Righty) SS. You may have heard of him. I loved the move last year of putting Jeter in the lead off spot. Jeter increased his stolen base total from 11 in 2008 to 30 in 2009, while being caught only 5 times in both years. I don't have the number for GIDP, but I would imagine that it also less. Get the guy as many at-bats as possible.
2. Johnny Damon - (Lefty) DH. Yeah so he's still fast enough to make up for his bad jumps, stone hands, and female arm, but if he comes back, he will most likely DH a fair amount of times. The beautiful new qualities of Yankee stadium have added greatly to his power value, meaning that keeping him in the 2 hole is a no-brainer. Jeter opens up the hole on the right side and is on base for the sky high pop that reaches the first row. (This is not stadium bashing by the way, New Yankee Stadium is beautiful and both teams have to play in the same field.)
3. Alex Rodriguez - (Righty) 3B. I've been on the rooftop to move Alex to 3rd in the order for a while now. ARod is a guess hitter who loves to extend his arms. The scouting report that EVERY team has for him is to bust him inside with fastballs and throw him breaking balls low and away. The reason that he sometimes looks bad on breaking pitches low and away is that he guessed fastball and started his swing early. Putting him in front of Tex probably ups the number of fastballs that he sees. Also, I'm of the belief that the 3-hole is where you put your best all around hitter, and that's A-Rod. He could put up MVP numbers in this spot. My only question about this is does anyone have the balls to ask him to give up the glory of being the "clean-up hitter", and does he have the balls to do it?
4. Mark Teixeira - (Switch) 1B. A switch hitter with a perfect swing for Yankee Stadium who led the American League in home runs and RBI last year. I don't think anyone is going to cry their eyes out about seeing him batting clean-up. Also, hitting behind A-Rod's .402 OBP instead of Damon's .365 OBP means it is less likely he will see a defensive shift.
5. Curtis Granderson - (Lefty) CF. And here's where I put the new guy. Another hitter with a perfect New Yankee Stadium swing. Definitely has the potential to have a 35-20 year. I think that Granderson's power threat will be enough to keep pitchers from throwing Tex nothing but junk; however, this is probably the biggest question mark of my lineup: whether or not Granderson can perform up to the task of batting 5th. I think he can. Oh and there is the idea that putting him in between slow runners will create a "log jam" and that he won't be able to steal or get an extra base. I will gladly give up the few bases that might be lost to get his bat in the middle of the lineup. He will have plenty of chances to run.
6. Jorge Posada - (Switch) C. I like Jorge in this spot to stagger the switch-hitters. A lot has been said on this site about Granderson's inability to hit lefties. There aren't a lot of great left handed starters in the AL East not named Sabathia or Lester. Although the right side is definitely Jorge's weaker side, and we can expect regression from last season's numbers, I think that an opposing manager is less likely to call in a lefty to face Granderson if Posada is batting behind him instead of Cano.
7. Nick Swisher - (Switch) RF. Swish had a great year last year. He is an OBP machine, has plenty of pop, and the amount of walks that he draws would probably help a station-to-station runner like Posada. I know that he struggled in the World Series and I know that this was Cano's spot for a lot of the playoffs, but I think that Swisher is better suited for it. Also, with the glut of switch hitters that we can put in the middle of our lineup, this becomes an impossible task for an opposing manager to negotiate around by changing relievers.
8. Robinson Cano - (Lefty) 2B. OK, I don't hate on Cano. I'm not going to quote you his batting average with runners in scoring position. I'm not demoting him. I LOVE Cano at the bottom of the lineup. I think that when pitchers bear down (with runners on base, for example), they are less likely to begin at-bats with good pitches to hit. However, at the bottom of the lineup, pitchers tend to try and pump through strikes one and two to get ahead. Cano devours that type of pitching. The year that he hit .342 was done primarily from the 9-spot in the lineup. Batting Cano here would be huge in starting rallies and turning the lineup over.
9. Melky Cabrera - (Switch) LF. Melky is faster, a better base stealer, and a better bunter than Cano, and for those reasons, gets the honor of batting last. Cano getting on, Melky moving him over, and Jeter slapping through a single to get him in could be something I could get VERY used to seeing. Also, Melky is arguably the weakest hitter in the lineup, so it makes sense to drop him down to 9th. As a caveat, I am also of the opinion that every single game that Brett Gardner starts should see him in the 9-hole for similar reasons.

i like you thinking
the biggest thing like you said would be the 3 / 4 hole in the lineup, but logically it makes sense. I would however consider moving Curtis down a bit in the lineup against lefties. Depending on how he looks after facing a few in ST maybe.
Damon is of course the biggest question mark at this point.
Holliday
if he still wants 8 years, I say screw him. But he rejected a nice contract for the Cardinals, and I think he’s waiting for the Yankees’ offer. If he takes 2 years less, take him Cash!!
Damon we can live without. If we sign Nady back, that’s a platoon of Hoffman/Gardner/Cabrera/Nady in LF, which I actually like. One of them is going to have a good season, and I’d rather have the platoon than an overpriced Damon who I throw better than (no kidding lol).
If Girardi asks A-Rod to move up one spot, he’ll do it. He just won a ring and is playing with that “No-More-Stress” vibe. He’ll do it if the FO asks him to.
You mean Melky in LF correct?
2 CF would be nice…but someone’s gotta play the line.
Also…A-Rod can’t really hit a slider either can he?
Bay is a fine hitter, I would not be pissed if they got him. He’d cost less than Holliday, and is a better hitter than Damon.

Well they're both capable of playing CF....
but yeah I meant LF for Melk

A-Rod can hit the crap out of any breaking pitch, including the slider
but like I said, he’s a guess hitter. If he guesses fastball and ends up with a breaking ball, he’s gonna waive at it. If he looks for something off speed and stays back on it, he crushes it.
Bay just can’t hit it period.

this is true..
he can’t hit it…
But .921 OPS, 36HR 119 RBI…say that not being able to hit a slider, its not gonna kill you.
Bay, potentially batting SECOND, behind Jeet?
All I’m saying, is if Damon is off the map with his demands, Matt Holliday ditto….it seems Bay’s offers are not ludicrous…if they get Bay for 5yr, $60 mill…..it could be a lot worse ya think?
They need to get a big bat to replace Damon and Mats. Grand Central is 1/2 of that…they need Damon/Holliday/Bay for the other part.

Bay
Current offers for Bay are around 15 mil per year, 4/60 and up. Personally I think 15 mill per year for Bay is too much when Holliday is probably going to come in around 18. I’d rather have Holliday for longer at those rates (though not 8 years). Most projections have him easily worth at least a win per year more than Bay for the rest of their careers. If you believe that, then Holliday for longer is certainly worth it. Still, if Bay went as low as 5/60, He’d be a good deal for us.
that's the difference
I of course would rather have Holliday.
But in the end, if Holliday signs for the St.Louis deal (they offered it..can’t see him accepting less then that…)
Bay for 4-5ys 65-75 million.
Holliday for ~8ys $126 million.

its a big difference...
in salary…for IMO, fairly marginal on how much better Holliday is.
Bay is a good player, and as a ‘fall-back’ option, wouldn’t be bad.

who is projected to get the bigger contract?
Bay at 4 years and 65 mil would translate to 8 years at 130 mil…meaning that Bay would be getting a higher yearly salary (but obviously less years, smaller commitment) than Holliday would at 8 years and 126 mil.

I'd rahter shell out a bit more
if it means HALF the contract.
8 years for Holliday is worse than 4 years of Bay.

I wonder why Swisher is guaranteed
as a FT right fielder in all the projected lineups i see.
Sure he a had a nice season, great clubhouse guy, etc
But he can also look pretty awful when slumping…and if he has an off year, our outfield/dh situation can start to look pretty weak
well...
who else?
Do we sign Damon for LF and Holliday for RF?
Cuz as it seems, while I would like to get 2 of Damon/Bay/Holliday, it looks like only one’s coming from that.
And I sure as hell hope you don’t want Melky or Gardner starting over Swisher every day. Those 2 slump as well, and at least Swisher’s gonna guarnatee 23-28 bombs a year.

Swisher had a OPS+ of 127
not many players in the game had a better offensive year than Swish

i just think it's more of a reason to get somebody
as opposed to being content with the status quo (i.e. letting matssui & damon walk, not signing bay or holliday, playing playing cabrera/gardner/miranda as your LD/DH)…cuz swisher IMO is by no means guaranteed to have a solid season (hope I’m wrong of course)
maybe bringing back nady into the mix is sounding pretty practical
oops
meant that as a reply to FreeBradshaw above
The thing is...
Swisher’s season last year…basically his career norms.
2008 was a horrendous year for him; it was an off year.
2009, more like his career norms.
Its not unreasonable to think Swisher can have a replica of 2009 in 2010…cuz that’s who he is.
As for your other point, yea I 100% agree, the Yanks need go get someone else, cuz I don’t want the LF/DH’s to be Melky, Gardner and Miranda platoon.
Damon/Holliday/Bay….ONE of these guys needs to be got…hell, 2 is not out of the question.
But don’t sell Swisher short, his 2009 is what you get from Nick Swisher, especially given a starting spot and guaranteed AB’s.

Look at his career stats...
The guy who averages about 26 HR a year.
Considering how nuts it is that he hit 8/29 HR at home…he could certainly get to 30 again.
This is a guy who hit 35 HR one year…basically 50/50 home/away, playing 82 games in the cavernous Oakland Coliseum.
He is NOT a slouch. Yes..he stunk in the playoffs…doesn’t mean he won’t hit 25 HR next year.
In the bottome 3rd of the order no less?
30HR? yea, that’s a high amount. 25? You might say that’s a lock.

I like the flip-flop of Tex and A-Rod
Ruth batted before Gehrig. That worked out okay.

Stats against BooSox pitching
Anyone out there care to share who has the best stats against Boston in Fenway and against Lackey, Lester and Beckett? Don’t care about Mothra and whiffle baller wakefield, we could sign Rudy Gulliani;s kid to hit off them.
The 3-4 switch
probably isn’t happening. Here’s why. Remember how bad Teixeira hit this year without the protection of A-Rod in the lineup? The moment A-Rod came back, Tex took off for the rest of the year. Tex is a hitter that I noticed struggled with breaking balls last year. He loves the fastball, which he will see more of if he hits in front of A-Rod. A-Rod, on the other hand, is a better hitter than Teixeira. He doesn’t need protection to be successful as much as Tex does.
The 3-4 of Tex and A-Rod won us a World Series this year. Don’t fix what isn’t broken.
I think that once Granderson
gets a good look at the short porch in right field, he will provide all of the protection that Tex needs.
While it definitely helped Tex to get A-Rod back in the lineup, he starts off slowly every April.
A-Rod would put up MVP numbers in the 3 spot, and Tex would have even more RBI opportunities in the 4 spot.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Granderson isn't A-Rod
he’s a good hitter, but he’s not A-Rod. A-Rod is one of the best hitters of all time. Granderson is a star, but he will never provide the same protection for Teixeira that A-Rod does.
Now, you say that Granderson will provide all that Tex needs. Thats a different issue. You may be right, and if you are, I’d be all for it. But we don’t know for sure if that works. We know the 3-4 combo of Tex-A-Rod works, since it won us a championship. Again, don’t fix what isn’t broken.
We also won a championship
by having Chien Ming Wang give up over a run an inning, keeping Cody Ransom on the roster for forever, and batting Cano 5th a good chunk of the year.
Because you win the World Series doesn’t mean that everything must be done exactly the same the next year. Is A-Rod batting 4th and Tex batting 3rd the reason we won? I would tend to doubt it. I think that there is enough logic behind switching them to at least give it a shot.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Maybe you're right
but if they’re going to give it a shot, do it in Spring Training. I don’t want them experimenting during the season with the lineup.
I personally think nothings gonna change. Girardi seems to like it the way it is. And only his opinion matters.
Yeah I don't think its gunna happen either
this is all just an “if Lord Duggan was in charge” post.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Granderson
I dont think would provide enough protection for arod/tex. Thats why I want Holliday. Pick your poison in that lineup
I'm not a huge believer in lineup protection
because I think that if you’re getting nothing but junk, a good hitter has to have the discipline to take a walk.
But I also wrote this based on my prediction that Granderson has himself a monster year. Moving to the Yankees and hitting in this lineup, I don’t think that .280 35 HR, 100 RBI, 100 R, 20 SB is out of the question.
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
Soriano stole 40 bases didn't he?
although I’m sure that Granderson could do that if he runs more. He’s got the speed.
as long as he doesn't swing at slider's in the dugout....
