Yanks were willing to offer Jesus Montero in big package but not Joba or Hughes for Halladay. Jays liked Drabek.
Heyman tweets about the Yanks' non-move on Halladay.
Not sure if this means wouldn't include Joba or Huges with Montero, or wouldn't include Joba or Hughes at all. Either way, I agree with the decision, especially if Cash was certain that Halladay was leaving the AL.

I agree as well
He’s out of the AL, and next year he’s a free agent.

He just signed a 3-year extension w. 2 option years
Cliff Lee, on the other hand…

Oh did he?
Well then nevermind. As you said though, Lee on the other hand…

what's amazing
is how much you hear about Kyle Drabek, yet his MiL stats are rather pedestrian. he’s 21, having completed 4 seasons – 268 ip, 3.70 ERA, 226 K, 96 BB, 1.26 WHIP.
(for comparison, Phil Hughes was absolutely dominating the minors at a younger age than Drabek. unfortunately i can only find his total MiL stats, which include a bunch of rehab starts in ‘08-’09, but here they are anyway: 330 ip, 2.37 ERA, 367 K, 80 BB, .92 WHIP. it’s only a matter of time before that translates to the Bigs. FYI, he had a 1.40 ERA as a reliever this year. no other ML reliever who threw at least 50 ip had a lower ERA!)
Another perspective
The Halladay/Lee trade was a very well thought out chess move by the Phillies. They knew the Mariners have some cash to spend (And I don’t think they are done yet). They also knew that the Angles were not going to be the same team next year, and neither would Boston (even with the moves they did).
So thinking this through more, why not help out the next possible team that could contend against the Yanks (with a few more trades IMO). Their thinking as well was that Halladay had been a thorn for the Yanks, so lets add him to our team and get him off the market before they can deal for him. This without really losing anything, and hope that the M’s contend and can see them there rather than the Yanks…especially since they have never been to a WS yet.
Superstitions
I did change…to this one. And yeah, I was a BB player with superstitions. Of course I know it really didn’t make a spit of difference to any player…or did it!?!? GRIN My thought is that I should at least keep it until the ’10 season is about to start.
I thought
that is basically what I posted in this morning’s News & Notes. It started with a Matsui ‘thank you.’ Please go use that if you want to talk about Matsui.
I'm pretty sure Cash said no to 'and'
In other words, Montero or Chamberlain or Hughes would have been the centerpiece. The Jays could not have had 2 of them.
And rightfully so...
the Jays DID get a Joba and a Montero from the Phillies.
Drabeck and Taylor are pretty much at the same caliber of Joba/Hughes and Montero…give or take…..

How come no one covers Steve Smith?

Rumor has the Jays moving Taylor
For Brett Wallace which makes the deal look nicer from their perpspective.
Not quite
I think either of them is a bit worse than their respective Yankee counterpart, unless I’m underrating Taylor.

you are...
people said Taylor might be the “best player in the minor leagues”.
…how…I dunno…but he’s a top prospect.

Hm
Hadn’t heard that before. Let’s see where BP/BA et al rank him in the prospect rankings the next few weeks.

You know whats funny?
Phillies fans regretting this trade big time now. They trade away 3 of their top prospects for Halladay (essentially the guys they wanted last midseason) , then trade away a pitcher of near equal caliber for a bunch of okay/ no great prospects. From the view outside looks like Seatle got a great one deal for litte + draft picks if lee walks, Toronto go what they wanted and Phillies gain very little (halladay is good, but lee isn;t far behind) while trading away their top farm prospects and gaining little from Lee. Lol in hindsight maybe the yanks coulda traded for lee if they knew he was available (doubt it) since seattle got him for dirt. (the porspects they gave up no where near Montero + hughes/joba level)
the prospects they gained
from Seattle…
Practically made the Halladay trade a wash…essentially Lee for Halladay.
Plus they locked up Halladay and Halladay is a better pitcher.
No…the Phillies did good here.

iunno i was reading the phillei blog and they are pissed over the trade
the prospects that gave up were top tier while they got back some mid tier prospects. Essentially they looked at it as two different trades. Top prospects for Halladay = good
Lee for mid prospects= bad. And plus in terms of WAR Lee is about 1 WAR diff.
Philly fans are fools.
They like Lee too, for what he did with them this year.
They did NOT get back mid-tier prospects.
Gilles and Aumont are as good as Drabeck and Taylor. They did NOT lose out on the Lee trade.
They essentially traded Halladay for Lee.

I read on the mariners blog
that gilles is projected to be a 4th outfielder since he has little power and is basically a slap hitter, similar to gardner. idk about aumont tho.
he is a power pitcher but injury projects him as a reliever
that really isn’t monster deal if thats true. phillies are slightly better this year but future wise it’s leaning more towards mariners/toronto
Disagree
Gilles and Aumont are as good as Drabek and Taylor? Not hardly.
by Brendan Scolari on Dec 15, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions
Gilles is a single-A player..but certainly has a lot of potential.
I dunno where the Aumont as a RP talk is…all I’ve heard on him is that he’s a front-line starter.

Except you know, Halladay will be even better now.
Yankees all day.

It works for the Phillies
since they’re a win-now team. They’re also getting $6M from the Jays to help offset Halladay’s salary. And then get to extend him for a below market rate for team-favorable years.

what the Phils
basically did was trade one great pitcher unwilling to sign an extension and a few good prospects for an ace who IS willing to sign an extension. from that view, it makes some sense.
Agreed
It was smart to not bite and give up Hughes/Joba.
