Counter MOVES

Damon, you better come back. You better take a deal circa 2 year 23 mil. Matsui is gone (sigh) to the (sigh) Angels. He can be DH/LF like everybodys talking about. Nobody has said much about this next one, Holliday. We need a counter-move to the Lackey/Cameron deal. Pull the trigger on Matt Holliday. The guy is a good combo of average and power. We deffinately should go after him, we need another bat. We also need one more starter, Sheets/WANG/Duscherer, although I wish we could add another RELIABLE arm. Lackey - I wish - no one agrees with me. Oh well, we could always look at trade. Not sure for who, but expect cash to make a huge counter move very soon.

It would be a Merry Christmas for Matt Holliday. Please Cash, take a look.

im onboard

for the holliday move

ive followed this guy for 4 years as a fantasy owner
( i have a man crush on him and got him 4 years in a row trying to make it 5)

you can forget about that play he made against the dodgers
he is a slightly above average fielder
but teh big plus is his bat look at what he did with the cardinals
also he is a hard worker and never stops trying- see slide against padres to win playin
game

naysayers say that he only did well in hitter freindly american league parks
but the dude can rake forget oakland cause anyone there would have put up ugly numbers

also a side note, holliday can steal 25 bases if given the chance, which would equal what damon could give us.

The interesting thing is if the yankees do indeed sign holliday where do you bat him?
5 behind arod? Possibly second? If they do get him, i would say move cano to two, out holliday 5, granderson 6, posada 7

by YanksVikes on Dec 14, 2009 10:27 PM EST reply actions

I like:

Jeter SS
Cano (better contact than Granderson) 2B
Teix 1B
Arod 3B
Holliday LF
Granderson CF
Jorgie C
Swish RF
Damon/ Matsui (WS MVP CASH!) DH ( JD"2nd" leadoff man)

Notice I surrounded the Lefties by switch/ righties. I like Cano at 2 because of the good contact (most of the time).

If we do have this line up…we could be looking at 260+ homeruns

As a rule of thumb

…anything that would be described as a “counter move” probably shouldn’t be made. The Yankees are the World Champs. They don’t need to worry about what moves other teams made. Work on making the Yankees the same calibur team they were in 09.

Who is competition to sign Holliday? We know the Sox are out. If the Mets sign Bay then it’s down to the Cardinals, if that’s the case Cash really should pick him up.

by Coke_Zero on Dec 14, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

yes sir

Yeah this would be a potent offense. Pick your poison. Who would you like. Tex? Grand Central? Arod? Holliday? I think this would translate to higher averages for Swish and Damon too. They basicall HAVE to pitch to them. I have really convinced myself to go for Holliday.

Cashman will come through in the clutch

by jramey on Dec 14, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

I am hoping that this is the reason why Cashman let Matsui go to Anaheim for peanuts.

by Coke_Zero on Dec 14, 2009 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

yankees need a few new faces

i think it is time to make a few have a merry christmas:

matt holliday 7yrs at and average of 18 would be best buy in baseball

ben sheets 4 million with loaded increases to 9 millon max

jason bay 5 yrs at 16 million

chaing mein wang 3 million with loaded increases to 6 million

trade for new american league cy young winner——-gardener, swisher, chamberlin / hughes

This is crap.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by CasanovaWong on Dec 14, 2009 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

I dont even want Bay. And yeah, I don’t think KC is exactly making Greinke available either.

by jramey on Dec 14, 2009 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

Deep breath

Knee jerk reactions to additions by rivals tend to be panic moves. Save the Holliday/Bay cash for Mauer next year.

Cameron and Hermida are a step down from Bay in left.. The real concern is Lackey coming to Boston. Their 5 man rotation if everyone is healthy is formidible, and the addition of Lackey makes a deal to San Diego for Gonzelez more likely.

The real concern is pitching.

by micka on Dec 14, 2009 11:24 PM EST reply actions

but again, there is not much available

Like a Piniero or Sheets is the best there is. And Mauer isn’t going anywhere. He IS Minnesotas Derek Jeter. For the Sake of baseball I hope he stays there. All we need is a bidding war on who wants to pay 30 mil/yr for Mauer. I really like Holliday

by jramey on Dec 14, 2009 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

Mauer isn't going anywhere

he’s staying with the Twins. He’s like a God over there. Like Jeter to us. Mauer is not going anywhere. You really want ANOTHER A-Rod contract on this team? Even the Yankees have a budget. And I want to see Montero get a shot in a few years.

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 15, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

Money talks.....

Truth is that mauer will get a Jeter sized contract, not Arod money. Even Pujols won’t pull ARod money on his next contract.. Can the Twins afford one guy taking up 22% of their salary structure, especially with another MVP already on the roster?
It is like the old joke about a bear chasing two guys through the woods. One guy stops to change from boots to sneakers. The second guy says “Are you nuts you can’t out run a bear, even in sneakers.” The first guy responds “I don’t have to out run the bear. I only have to out run you.”
If Mauer stays with the Twins as you suggest, he will use free agency to leverage the home team. The only game then is to out run the Red Sox to prevent catastrophe.

by micka on Dec 15, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

No need to panic

Boston got better by adding Lackey as their SP is one of the best with Burnett, Lester, Matsuzaka, and Lackey. I am glad that Halladay got traded to someon else which means that NYY did not have to trade Montero, Joba/Hughes. If Damon doesn’t come back, then it is time to go after Holliday or Bay. I still do not like the idea of giving Damon more than 2 years, so it is time to say goodbye if Boras still insists for four years. As for SP, I like the idea of Sheets as he can be dominant at times although the history suggests he will not be healthy the entire year.

You mean Beckett, right?

I’m pretty sure Burnett is on the Yankees unless you know something I don’t.

Play today, win today, ‘das it.

by noonoo on Dec 14, 2009 11:56 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to make moves just because the Sox made a couple of moves. Impulsive moves tend to blow up in ones face. Cashman has shown the smarts needed to run the Yankees these past few years so I don’t think there’s any need to rush.

No need to make moves just for the sake of making moves and try to “one up” the Sox.

Play today, win today, ‘das it.

by noonoo on Dec 14, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions

yea..

we’re gonna overpay for Johnny a bit…but if they did offer Holliday that…yea, he’s not a fallback option.

I don’t think we’ll see his 4yr 52 mill pipe dream, but 2 years and 30 mill is not out of the question (and too much…)

thats not an official offer

according to mlbtr and peter gammons the cards actual offer to holliday was for 5 yrs at that rate… easily beatable if we decided to go that way even though i am not sold on it

id

like to see the yanks make a move at pineiro
last season was a pretty good one for him and i think he would make a great 4th starter

by YanksVikes on Dec 15, 2009 12:31 AM EST reply actions

beware...

former Cardinals starters…those coached by Dave Duncan, are not what they seem.

Are you guys

serious? The Red Sox made a move for an overrated starter that’s in his decline and who….Mike Cameron?? Oh, don’t forget Scutaro. ..And we’re pressing the panic button?

The right move’s this offseason were done already. We got an All-Star centerfielder in a steal of a deal, and resigned Andy. Nothing more than some tweaking needs to be done (Damon, a cheap starter, etc.).

They were making reaction moves to us, we don’t need to be doing the same to them. Lackey was overrated this winter because of the thin quality in the FA Market.

by moose35 on Dec 15, 2009 8:20 AM EST reply actions

Damon will probably come back

and maybe a fourth starter, like Sheets/WANG will be added. OOther than that, the Yanks don’t need to do much. You know they ARE the World Champions. They don’t need much.
