Halladay headed to Phillies

Looks like no 'Doc' in the Bronx. Roy Halladay is apparently headed to Philadelphia in a three-team deal.

No worries,

he just picks up where Lee left off.

Wow

Halladay and Lee together in the National League…Philly must really want that WS Trophy back.

by david d on Dec 14, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions

Lee is outta there

Halladay replaces him – not TOO serious of a trade – I’m not really concerned

by ROCNation on Dec 14, 2009 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

I see that

Funny, if I was Philly I’d rather keep Lee. But I am glad Halladay is outta our division!

by david d on Dec 14, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Apprantely

Lee didn’t denied Phillies contract extension deal offered to him. Soo, I understand the deal in that point of perceptive.

Sorryyy, lol

Lee DID deny the extension deal

by NYYEastcosterNJD on Dec 14, 2009 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

There is no promise that Lee is being moved

Heyman who first reported the deal apologized in a tweet right after saying that lee may not be in the deal for sure. We will find out shortly for sure though if they were together they would be unstoppable in the NL

Need To Make A Move

The Yankees need to make a move now. I’m not comfortable with Joba and Hughes in the rotation, Joba needs to be in the bullpen. They need to make a move for another good starter.

by denvir8554 on Dec 14, 2009 4:23 PM EST reply actions

on the contrary..

i think the Yanks are doing a damn fine job of letting the market come to them. they’ll get another starter or two at some point, but they won’t have to back up the the friggin cash truck to do it.

by NumberSeven on Dec 14, 2009 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yep. Save the cash truck for next season. Jeter, Mo, Mauer, and Lee.

by jscape2000 on Dec 14, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

I thinkk

Mariners might sign Lee with a contract extension. Although Lee wants a extension deal that the free agent market would offer.

by NYYEastcosterNJD on Dec 14, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yes we need one more reliable starter. As for Mauer, come on, the Twins will never let him go. He’s the face of the franchise, and moving into a new ballpark, they’ll need him to sell tickets. That will never happen, realistically. I’m not saying sign some huge name starter, but get somebody who can fill a 4th spot, and put Joba back in the bullpen where he has proven to dominate.

by denvir8554 on Dec 14, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

good move, could be another pavano, i guess you have to take your chances.

by denvir8554 on Dec 15, 2009 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

So Halladay out of AL East, Good for the Yankees.

Mariners just became a more major threat, but better than either Halladay or Lee going to the Red Sox.

I don’t like Lackey going to Boston, but he fits and is not as dangerous as Lee or Halladay.

I still have a feeling the Yankees will make a move for Holliday so they can fill LF and DH hole, then possibly go After Duchscherer, as he proved to be excellent when healthy as both a starter and reliever.

by Monotonousblob on Dec 14, 2009 4:24 PM EST reply actions

hope you are wrong...

about Holliday. I don’t want to see this team add another long-term contract. If they can get Boras down to 4-5 years, I say go for it. But no more 7-8 year deals.

by NumberSeven on Dec 14, 2009 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Holliday

I’m torn about Holliday. On the one hand, he’s clearly a great player and would make this team much better than signing any or the other stopgap/veterans out there. On the other, he’ll be expensive, will cost a first round pick and may prevent us from being big players in next years FA market. There are some good OFs next year too and if we don’t have to commit as much money to Holliday this year we’ll be in a better place to pursue one or more of the strong pitchers. We’ll see.

by metric on Dec 14, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

On Holliday

I think he might be a better overall player than any OF free agent next year, he’s been consistently worth more than Crawford and Werth over his career, plus he’s a few years younger than both of them. The big problem is Scott Boras.

I agree the Yankees need pitching more than an outfielder, but they can pick up a a incentive laden deal for Wang/Sheets/Duchscherer and trade Cabrera or Gardner for a bull pen arm (or send Gardner to the minors as with Hoffmann we don’t need that many OF’s), plus Hughes and Joba are at the age to start becoming great starters hopefully.

There are risks in any situation, but the sooner something is done the better, I hate waiting and so do free agents.

by Monotonousblob on Dec 14, 2009 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Re Holliday

You’re probably right. Getting the best player for our needs is a better than waiting for possibly cheaper alternatives, which may or may not even be available when the time comes. Crawford is a year and a half younger than Holliday, but I don’t think that makes too much of a difference in the valuation. It’d only make sense if we could get one of the other one of the other two for significantly cheaper for fewer non peak years.

by metric on Dec 14, 2009 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Your're right, Crawford is younger, and a better defender

But the problem with Crawford is that speed plays the most important part of his game, and that’s one of the first thing to show noticeable degradation, unless you happen to be Ricky Henderson.

by Monotonousblob on Dec 14, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

I feel a little concerned

I’m glad Montero, Hughes, and Joba are all here to stay, but with Lackey going to Boston (did we even try for him) and Wang likely leaving, we might be without a 5th starter again. And if Joba isn’t great, we could be seriously weak.

"We're only going to score 17 points?"

by Edgware on Dec 14, 2009 4:33 PM EST reply actions

Joba and Hughes are 4th and 5th right now.

Him and a healthy Beckett is just as potent as Lee and Halladay…..

no rush

Cash doing the right thing by waiting

Yanks were not going to give up the player for Doc or the money for Lackey so this was predictable

Sheets or Duke remain possible

The BIG thing is I do NOT want Damon back. Watch him age before your very eyes mid way through year one of a multi year deal.

agree.

I’d rather one year with an option.

Bay appears to be gone from the Sux, so if the Yankees sign Holliday then there is nothing left to fill Boston’s hole in left field.

i really don't see how the phillies upgraded...

Congratz you traded an ace for a slightly (even thats arguable) better ace, who’s older. The team didn’t exactly get much better more like it stayed at where it is. Mariners are alot better tho.

They’ve got him and extended him. They’re long term is much brighter, and the AL-NL switch will remind the world how good Doc is to have done his thing in the AL East.

Not to mention the Phillies are reportedly giving up prospects in this deal, and they already gave up prospects for Lee.

by KingHenrik on Dec 14, 2009 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

is Lee turned down the Phils extension offer. This is a possible reason for the swap.

Bad thing for Philly

Is they gave prospects for Lee and now it looks as if they gave more for Halladay just so they could find one who would sign with them long term.Big plus is I do not have to look at Lackeys ugly ass every fifth day.Personally I think Boston is going to regret the money.

I want the Yankees..

In the event Damon won’t accept a 2 year deal; they should sign Bedard or Sheets (whoever they perceive to have a better chance of lasting over the course of a season) and a cheap DH like Delgado and just stick Melky in left…I think that would guarantee us being the most complete team in the majors.

by Wraithpk on Dec 14, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

LOVE THE MOVE

From a Yankee standpoint!
1. We don’t have to give up the truckload of talent needed to keep him away from fenway
2. We save on the money we would have spent extending him
3. He doesn’t go to the angels
4. He leaves the American league
5. The team that gets him becomes only marginally better in the move

Seattle certainly gets stronger, but we only directly compete with them 6 times a year, or in case of emergency, if we are fighting for the wild card.

by KingHenrik on Dec 14, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Well, we'll see what happens with that Lackey signing

Generally, I don’t think the Halladay thing hurts us at all.

-The Phils are the same team.
-The Mariners are a lot better (great, because now at least every 5th Ms game is worth watching for me).
-Boston…I guess it depends on whether you think a Beckett/Lester/Lackey/Dice-K/Bucholz rotation (which is absolutely sick) offsets the decline of Ortiz & Lowell and the loss of Bay. Boston’s going to have great pitching next year, but will they score runs?

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2009 9:04 PM EST reply actions

they were supposed to have great pitching this past year....

they all got injured.

Lackey, Dice-K, Beckett..sure are injury prone.

Buccholz is coming off a big workload, he could break down too.

Lester is due too after a few 200+ inning seasons.

Hard to say.

by PortlandYankee on Dec 14, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

No. That’s a lot of pitching depth to give up. Just sign Beltre and call it a winter.

by KingHenrik on Dec 14, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

Buccholz "big workload"?

He threw 92 innings and his wins were against the mighty KC, BAL (2), TOR (2), TB (2) etc.

by david d on Dec 14, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Ugh...

Halladay replaces Lee, big woop. He’s out of the AL East and we only have to face him pending the Phils take the NL Penant for the 3rd straight year. The Mariners might actually win the AL West and the Angels, well, they are weakened significantly. These are all good things. Soon as the Yanks sign Sheets, all will be right.

by RuBiCaNT on Dec 14, 2009 9:12 PM EST reply actions

Don't count on Sheets for anything

if the Yankees sign Sheets, then he should be held to no expectations. Anything he gives would be a bonus. You can’t count on someone who hasn’t pitched in a year. We know what Sheets is capable of, but we can’t expect it if he’s signed. Sort of like A-Rod this year, coming back from surgery.

M’s should be the favorite in the West now. Angels have lost everybody. Looks like their playoff days are over for a while. They are awful at resigning people. Couldn’t keep Tex last year, and none of their key players this year?

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 14, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

The Mariners have signed a lead off hitter to go along with their other lead off hitter, and don’t have anyone who can hit for power..Id take the rangers or Angles over them in a heartbeat.

by KingHenrik on Dec 14, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

No more Halladay in the East

That is quite a relief. I do think we need to get a solid pitcher who is AMERICAN LEAGUE proven. Piniero sounds like a nice option but his stats are against the Astros, Cubs, Brewers etc. I truly think the Mariners have a decent squad right now. King Felix and Lee at the front of that rotation is a nice duo. Not the favorite in AL west yet in my opinion but they are making some nice moves. All I want for Christmas is a solid mid-rotation pitcher. Not too much to ask for right?

by PinstripedinMN on Dec 14, 2009 9:42 PM EST reply actions

With the Lackey Move...

They will have no money for Pap or Vmart. Especially if they throw money at Beltre. The only thing that gets my shorts in a bunch, is that Clay could be traded for adrian gonzo. That would stack them up pretty solid on the offense and pitching side for this year.

We need 2 sleeper starters and jam Hughs and Jaba in the pen. We also need 25-35 home run outfielder /DH to keep up. Gard/Melky are not the answer. Band Aid maybe till July.

Halladay to Phils…good riddens… Anyone know the history of the F.A’s out there who have solid stats in Fenway or against Lackey/Beckett/Lester?

If Bay is the only one, he maybe a solid 6-7 hitter ..(chuckle)

by NJHEAT on Dec 14, 2009 10:21 PM EST reply actions

no way for bay..too much money and is a horrible fielder

if we really wanted to pay for an overrated hitter and Fa, we’d sign Holliday.

by lololol on Dec 14, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

Phillies did what?

I don’t get this trade for them at all… I guess there are still more details to come out… but the NL champs are pretty much trading a great pitcher for another one. I mean, weren’t they satisfied with Cliff Lee? How much more dominant did they want him to be?

A few weeks ago, I replied to a post and I said that I liked Mariners players over the years because they seemed cool and they’re always non-threatening… I guess that’s no longer the case. With Figgins and Lee on board, they’re officially scary.

Despite not getting my favorite Non-Yankee in Doc, I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief that he didn’t land on the Sox or the Angels or an AL East team. The Fightin’ might not be my first choice as an NL team for him, but I can’t be too picky. With Lee, If I’m the Angels, I’d be very very scared. Their division dominance is about to be challenged.

by Peppered on Dec 14, 2009 10:32 PM EST reply actions

as Yankee fans

this is basically the best result we could’ve hoped for. Halladay is out of the division, didn’t go to Boston, and we didn’t have to mortgage our best prospect(s) for him.

by Travis G on Dec 14, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions

+1

and the Phillies didn’t even improve that much because they lose Cliff Lee and JA Happ if that is in fact the trade that goes down.

Honestly I think that the Phillies are losers in this. I know that they got to the World Series this year, but to give up 3 prospects for Lee, and then give up Lee and 2 more prospects for Halladay? 5 prospects for a 33 year old pitcher who you have to sign to a lucrative extension? Pass.

Honestly I think that this could be an excellent trade for the Jays if they get a solid haul of prospects (which it looks like they will).

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.
