Matsui close to deal with Anaheim
One year and $6.5 million. C'mon, Cash, you can top that.
(Apparently Cash wanted to address starters and Damon before getting to Matsui. But Mats wanted something done sooner. Understandable.)
Update: Confirmed by Tyler Kepner.
You will be missed, Hideki.

One year $7.5 mill.
and all the porn you want Mats.
C’mon man….

How come no one covers Steve Smith?
What this means is....
that the Yankees should sign Vlad for $5M. That’ll show em. Oh he can’t hit lefties….nm.
Well
I’m fine with Matsui leaving, to be honest. The Yanks will end up bringing back Damon, most likely. Truth is, they have not made an effort with Matsui because they don’t want a guy who can only DH. And that’s OK. Good luck, Hideki. You’re a class act.
One reason I would not sign Matsui is
that I see Posada getting more DH time next year and Cervelli getting more time behind the plate. Damon would work as he can still play LF. I think Vlad would be worse than Matsui. I agree on Damon for two years and not three. Too bad Matsui wants to move quickly, this may take away some leverage with Boras.
That’s not to say I don’t like Matsui. I think he’s great. Just don’t see Posada as a full time catcher next year.
Why bring back Damon for his ridiculous 3 year asking price?
Didn’t we just get Granderson for our star CFer and a perfect number 2 hitter to back up Jeter? Sorry, Damon in LF is one step above having nobody in LF. Sign Matsui for 7 million and slap here in LF. Hell you can move Swish to LF and resign Nady for next to nothing and have Melky as his backup.

1) Nady isn't signing for nothing
2) agree, Melky in LF, Samurai for DH.
3) FK the old hats…sign Holliday for what he’s worth, enjoy superstar in LF for next 5-6 years.

Cash says to Damon
2 yrs, $22 million ( too much for me but…)
take it today or I go get Matsui for 7M for one year and take the offer off the table. Boros can take a walk on the wild side.
Would rather have Mats at one year than Damon at two. The man is a professional hitter and, agree Ed, a class act.
But he's Godzilla
I mean, as a Godzilla movie fan, having him on the team is like a huge blessing in disguise. Hopefully Cash can sign him back.

If Matsui is gone
then Damon needs to come back. Thats 50 HR lost right there. We need one of them back. I would have preferred to bring back Damon anyways, but now with the option of Matsui gone, the Yankees need Damon even more. They aren’t signing Holliday/Bay to another long term contract in my mind. Figgins is gone. I guess they could try DeRosa. But Damon is a better option than all of them.
Cashman took too much time, and as a result, Mats is probably gone. Don’t screw this up Cashman. One of them needs to come back!!!
Ode to Hideki
MLB Trade Rumors says Matsui’s deal with the Angels is pretty much done. I can understand why Hideki didn’t want to wait around while the Yankees kept him on the back burner, especially when he got a chance to go to a playoff team in a major media market. I think we all saw this coming but still it’s sad to see the guy go – he was a great Yankee for 7 years – always had class and played hard and was an outstanding clutch hitter. He’ll be missed.
The Yankees still have a lot of options. If Damon gets his 3-year deal elsewhere, corner outfielders aren’t that hard to come by. They can also go after one of the other available DH’s and use Gar-brera in left.

Really?
It’s official? Well, good luck to Matsui. He was a great Yankee.
I still think that Damon will come back to DH (and part time LF). And then they could use Gar-brera in left, and Granderson in center, Swish in right. Thats a great lineup.
aw, come on.
we are losing mats, really?
CMW & Mats both?
This is gonna bite the yanks in the ass. Not only were the two pretty much the biggest asian media stars and profit makers, but I dont know if we can afford to lose them here.
Cashman….? This aint funny.
This is kinda like letting Andy leave after 03, because Sheff was more important
Matsui wouldve paid for himself with all the revenue from the Japanese advertisers. So lets see, we add a guy that cant hit lefties, we lose a guy that kills them. We are going to rely on a crappy injury plagued pitcher rather than get another top tiered one and we have to watch Hughes be messed with like Joba was this year. Id say we arent going back to back. Sorry, I dont see us getting away with another 3 man rotation next year.
We will miss Hideki's RBI's and Home runs!
The Yankees are being patient when they traded for Curtis Granderson and then later signed Andy Pettitte. The Yankees are playing cat and mouse with Damon/Boras and placed Matsui as their 2nd option.
The problem for being patient is the window of opportunity of some free agents (like Matsui) closes so fast. Now Hideki is gone and the Yanks are now pressured to give a 2 year plus 1 year club option offer to Damon.
If we could turn back the clock the Yankees should go instead with Matsui. He hits better than Damon and is willing to sign a 1 year $ 7 million contract.
We will surely miss Godzilla!
Cant say I would rather have Matsui over Damon
I wanted them both back for another year but Matsui cant run or even play the field like Damon can. If the Yanks lose Damon too, this team is going to have a lot of holes in the lineup. Swisher is not that good.

If we're going to lose Godzilla, can it not be for 6.5M?
Come on, Cashman, at least put up a fight for the World Series MVP.
This was dumb
How is it that the Angels for the second year in a row have signed a great Yankee hitter for a fraction of what the Yanks paid before. Last time we let a WS MVP walk away it worked out ok, but we dont have another player of Mo’s caliber waiting to replace Matsui. So because Posada needs to DH we are risking losing 75 hrs and 170 RBIs. Hope Posada has a monster season in him.

Deal is done
So long, Mats. We’re going to miss your production but hopefully there’s one more bat out there, waiting to be signed.
