If Damon Leaves, Where Does He Go?
There's been lots of buzz around here lately regarding Johnny Damon...
- his asking price
- how much the Yankees have offered
- IF they actually made an offer
- how much SHOULD they offer
- how long will they allow for reaching an agreement
- should we bring Damon back
- what position will Damon play if he comes back
- who will replace Damon if he doesn't come back
...but the one thing I haven't seen much talk about, is who might sign Damon if he doesn't sign with the Yankees, and under what terms?
Right now it sounds like Scott Boras has a pretty extreme offer on the table in both years (4? 5?) and salary (at least as much as Damon made last time around). We can assume those demands will come down some, but at what point (in contract terms) do you see some other teams biting? Who's likely to be talking to Damon, and for what role? Where do they fall in willingness to sign Damon relative to what the Yankees are likely to offer?

I don't see him signing until Holliday and Bay signs
From all the hot stove noise, it sounds like Damon/Boras is demanding to receive the third richest contract among free agent outfielders. He could very well end up being the Bobby Abreu of the ‘09-’10 shopping season if his stance doesn’t change.
This
is exactly why the Granderson trade was such a good move. Damon comes when we want him to, on our terms. We won’t be signing him out of desperation. So he either get’s his deal elsewhere or comes to us for what we want (2 years, 25 mill?)
Where does he go?
who knows? Maybe the Mets? They will probably fail in signing anyone due to their awful ownership, and maybe, in a desperation move, sign Damon to the money he wants to play LF. Damon would get his money, and he wouldn’t have to change homes. Thats the first that comes to mind for me.
My gut still tells me he’s coming back to the Yanks.
