This offends me

Mostly the Nady part.

Some of the Halladay, a lot of the Mauer and a whole lot of the Sizemore.

I’d be in the principal’s office tattle-taling on this one.

Very offensive this fanpost.

Yeah...

He breached two of the forbidden topics: trading Montero, and making some crazy deal for Sizemore.

DO NOT TRADE JESUS MONTERO FOR A PLAYER WE DON'T NEED!!!!!!

I’m sick and tired of all the talk of Halladay. I wish he would just get traded so that people will shut up about trying to get him. He’s a great pitcher, but the Yankees DON’T NEED HIM!!!! They’re fine the way it is WITHOUT giving up Jesus, don’t you think?

by nyyrocks29 on Dec 12, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply actions

Sigh

The idea that we shouldn’t trade Jesus Montero for Roy Halladay is just crazy. It’s akin to not trading AJax for Granderson. If the other parts of the deal aren’t too deep a cut, of course you give up the potential upside for the proven upside. It all comes down to the other players in the deal, and I’d be surprised if that’s not how Cashman is thinking about it.

Halladay > Montero. Period.

The question is: Is Halladay > Montero + Joba + Spare Part. I’m not convinced that he’s not, and I’m not convinced that he is. But some of you guys have been reading wayyy too much of Jesus’ press. One blog picks him as a Top 5 prospect, and suddenly he walks on water.

(BTW, I love that I can keep using bad religious puns with this guy — that’s one reason to keep him around.)

Actually the question becomes more than that: is what’s left of Halladay’s career worth more than Montero’s ENTIRE career?

by pinstriper on Dec 12, 2009 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

How on earth do you

have more than a strong hunch what Montero’s career is going to be? Bird in the hand, baby.

I like Montero + Halladay better.

Patience.

Yanks have as good a chance as anyone in the league to win the WS, no matter who gets Halladay (yea, no one else probably has a chance if they do…)

The 'need' issue

is a more compelling argument. It IS almost glutinous to go after Halladay. That I agree with. But basing the case on Montero becoming, well, Jesus…that movie I’ve seen. Rarely turns out that way.

He is one of the best players we’ve had in our minor league system in the modern era. We’ve never had one of those super-freak athletes in our system like an A-Rod or Griffey Jr. who was an absolute sure thing, but Montero is the next closest thing to that, on the level of a Miguel Cabrera or Manny Ramirez. Barring some kind of catastrophic injury, he should at least be an above average hitter in the majors, from the catcher position.

by Wraithpk on Dec 13, 2009 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

the Yankees have had some sort of luck with their top prospects

who they keep, turning into great players haven’t they?

Pettite, Bernie, Jeter, Rivera, I guess Cano…

When they keep a player the caliber of Montero, he turns into a “Yankee” doesn’t he?

Remember that Halladay is 34 years old

he’ll start declining eventually. I thought that the Yankees goal was to get younger? And to lose payroll? Getting Halladay means, getting older, getting rid of some great talent, and paying a “CC-like” contract.

If the Yankees didn’t have CC and needed an ace, I would agree with you. If this was at this point last year, when Pettitte was a mystery, Mussina had retired, Hughes was a AAA pitcher, and Joba hurt himself the last time he started, and Wang hadn’t pitched since June, and that was our rotation, I would agree with you. Now? Not so much. The Yankees do not NEED Roy Halladay. Trading for him would feel like a desperation move to me that they don’t need to take. Why give up one of the best prospects in baseball, along with other players that were key components in their latest championship run, for an older pitcher that is going to demand millions a year, and a 6 year extention? Thats too much. What makes more sense to me would be to sign Lackey, or Sheets, or Wang, or someone like that. Someone that could help the team, has upside, and would NOT cost all the money and all the prospects.

And if you’ve seen Montero play, you’d know what all the hype about him is about. Offensively, he is the real deal. The guy is 19 years old, and was already in AA last year. And you’re comparing him to AJAX, who I liked, but who is 23 years old and still not MLB ready. Montero is way ahead of all other prospects. The Yankees will need a catcher soon with Jorge’s career wrapping up.

One thing is for

certain: I’m glad I’m not Cashman. Hard call. I expect he’ll lay in the weeds awhile.

roy halladay is 32

and could be an extremely productive pitcher for 8 more years. In that time he could win 15 to 20 games per year ( all said he could win close to 140 games as a Yankee). He could bring a veteran’s attitude and work ethic to assist mentor the young stars. He will not need to have “rules” applied.
If Montero is as good as you think he may become…why not sign him to a long term deal when he proves his worth as major league ball player and the Blue Jays can’t afford him?

by ilBrutto on Dec 12, 2009 11:14 PM EST reply actions

Because we could get 5 or 6 years of him at a bargain price. The Yankees, believe it or not, do have a budget. We will be better if we have an All-Star catcher making league minimum, freeing us up to spend money elsewhere on the team.

by Wraithpk on Dec 13, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

I predict that Wang and Halladay will not push Joba and Hughes into the bullpen.
Going out on a limb here.

No Halladay

I just do not like trading your best prospects like Montero to the same division even for Halladay. Montero is a much better prospect than AJax and has a very high potential. If he were to be traded to Toronto, Montero can hurt NYY for years. NYY does not need break its farm system for Halladay as another SP is not a need at this time.

Not sure how you trade Joba AND have him in your 'pen

Other than that….this is still pretty bad.

Around the interwebs, they call that smoking “the Yankee magic dust.” Or smoking crack. I get my euphemisms mixed up some times.

Almost the same, except slightly better

As much as I love Doc, it seems less and less likely that they’ll acquire him. With Matsui more willing to rationally negotiate than Damon/Boras, I have a feeling that it’ll still be the same lineup next season with Granderson taking Damon’s spot in the 2 hole. On defense, Melky moves to left.
