The DH and What to Do with All of Our Outfielders
Juan Miranda. He's the only DH on our depth chart right now. Even though Miranda is OK, we're the Yankees. So here's my plan:
Keep Miranda. The guy is acctually a beast against righties and he doesn't have Scott Boras as an agent (cough-cough-Johnny-Damon-cough-cough). But then the question arouses; who to play when facing a left-handed pitcher? Well here's my solution. Sign Mike Cameron. He won't cost nearly as much as Damon. Put him, Swish, Miranda and Posada in a platoon at DH.
So our line up could look like this:
Jeter SS
Granderson CF
Texeria 1st
A-rod 3rd
Posada C
Cano 2nd
Swisher RF
Miranda DH
Cameron LF
This:
Jeter SS
Granderson CF
Texeria 1st
A-rod 3rd
Posada C
Cano 2nd
Swisher RF
Cameron DH
Cabrera/Gardner/Hoffman LF
This:
Jeter SS
Granderson CF/LF
Texeria 1st
A-rod 3rd
Posada C
Cano 2nd
Swisher DH
Cameron CF/LF (RH)
Cabrera/Gardner/Hoffman RF
Or this:
Jeter SS
Granderson CF
Texeria 1st
A-rod 3rd
Posada DH
Cano 2nd
Swisher RF
Cameron LF (RH)
Cervelli C (RH)
With all this line up flexibility Joe could stock the line up with lefties or righties depending who were facing. He also could give the DH to Tex and have Miranda play first or even give Jeter, A-rod or Cano a day at DH and have Pena play their positions. This is the perfect way to use the DH for an aging team.
Now the question is, you have Melky, Gardner, Hoffman, Granderson, Cameron and Swisher for 3 outfield spots. Even though I hate to say it, I think its time to part with Gardner. The White Sox have been interested in Gardner and Melky is much better at the corner outfield positions. The White Sox also have just what the Yankees need, a relief pitcher. I know a starter is more important but I'd rather go after Sheets on the FA market. Matt Thorton could be the perfect set up man for Mo, letting either Joba or Hughes take the 7th inning. Thorton posted a 2.74 ERA last year and I think we could get him with Gardner and a minor leaguer such as Zach McAllister.
If only I was Brian Cashman...

I'd like to see Miranda get a shot
I don’t think they’ll go into camp with him as the sole option tho…cuz they’re the Yankees.
I like Cameron signing too. Gives flexibility, a guy who can fill in at CF and the other 2 spots too. And of course a RH power bat to face LH when Grandy has to face a LF in late situ’s.
I don’t like Johnny’s contract demands…not sure on Mats’ tho, but signing a guy like Cameron gives more lineup flexibility than Mats, so yea, good move.
ANd you can always scrap Miranda for say…..Jesus if need be.

Mike Cameron
Hopefully the Yankees will never think about signing him. The best option is Melky, Granderson and Bay when they sign him.
Why the hell do they need to pay Bay $100 million?
Swisher is damn near as productive…and a fraction of the cost.

Sign Matsui
Kepp Matsui as dh for 1 more year. Sign Mauer after next season then move Posada to DH to end his career as a Yankee.
This has about a 1% of happening
Miranda getting a shot is ok. Barring the Damon signing or Matsui proving that he can play the outfield. The Yanks are probably going to role with a Hoffman/Melky/ Gardy combo in left. Which wouldn’t be bad at all. Also relievers are replaceable, sending Gardy and a decent prospect like Zach Mcallister for a set up man is not a good idea. If the Yanks need a set up man they should look within David Robertson is a very good option for the job.

i want
to see cano get a shot to hit second
will see better pitches and hits lefties better than granderson
I 2nd this.
The chance to do it at least, and sans Damon.

Cano 2nd
Normally, no, he’s not the ideal 2nd hitter because he doesn’t take a lot of pitches or move runners over – but he does make a lot of contact, and it’s scary to think how well he’d do hitting in front of Teixeira and A-Rod, seeing so many fastballs. If Damon doesn’t return then Cano should definitely hit 2nd.

i disagree
Cano isn’t patient enough at the plate. He’s more of a 3 or 5 hitter on most teams, but on this team he will be lower in the order. Swisher would make a better 2 hitter against lefties because he walks a lot.
I agree.
its just, Cano’s OBP is not atrocious. It seems when he’s going good, its ~.350. Obviously, >.370 would be better, but his is not bad.
Considering his contact rate, it could work to perfection.
Cano’s career OBP is .339, while Swisher’s is .357
…IMO, not drastic enough of a difference, and Cano’s contact ability and power could lead to more 1st and 3rds for the latter batters.
