Yanks and Damon $34 million apart
The Yanks offered $18 million for two years. Damon/Boras wants $52 million for four years. (Are they nuts?!)
And no, Jon Heyman, it does not have to get done.

I wonder if Matsui’s demands are equally nuts.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Looks as though..
we might find out. Isn’t there some kind of procedure we could arrange for Mats that involved bionic knees?
He said he dosen't care about money or years, he just wants to play the OF
not a good sign…
VA Yankee since 93'
I understand his pride
but I have a hard time believing that he really thinks he can still play the outfield with his knees. If that’s the case, I guess it’s time for plan C. Who knows with Boras BS Damon line though. Fun to speculate for now.

Well, can we start looking at Mat then?
Cuz as much as I love Damon (I really do), that’s just unrealistic…
Well, if you're in Boras's position, and you have his rep,
It’s worth a try. At this point, no GM takes him seriously anyways.
We’re probably going to have to see this drag out for a while. But, I still think we could get a 2 year deal done, maybe 10-11M?
The best part about this, there really is no one who has mentioned they’re interested in Damon. No point in bidding against ourselves.
Well
I hope something gets done, but, seriously, is Boras insane? 52 million for 4 years is the contract that Johnny just finished. Now, he’s 4 years older and he gets the same contract?
Johnny, I’d do what A-Rod did. Throw Boras out the window, and just accept the deal! Because, if you don’t, you’ll be sitting with some team somewhere else, that isn’t as good as the Yankees in ANY way (worse fans, worse team, worse stadium for you, and almost certainly less money for you), and you’ll wake up one day and wonder, "why the hell am I here when I should be playing left field in Yankee Stadium?
He’ll regret it if he doesn’t sign. I still think he’s coming back, but just because no other team is going to pay him what he wants either, and he’ll have to drop his price. I see this dragging on for a while, but I still think he returns.
Take it with a grain of salt
Boras always leaks these outrageous numbers during negotiations. The first time we signed Damon, we signed him or 4/52 after Boras had been sending out rumors that Damon expected 6 years at 15 mil per. As a result the Yankees felt like they were getting Damon at a good price when they were actually paying slightly above market value given what other teams offered. Boras has been maniupulating teams like this for years – he knows as well as we do that Damon’s not getting 4/52 again. Same thing with Arod last time. Boras kept floating $40 mil a year to the point where people actually looked at 10/275 as a victory for the Yankees.
It is risky with Damon this time though. I’m sure while they negotiate with him the Yankees are monitoring other options so if they go another direction, Damon has a chance to get Abreu’d and have to take a 1 year deal somewhere for a lot less.

I was off by a million
2/$17M was my prediction. If Damon truly wants to come back, he should take the offer. By turning it down, it’s only going to further dip.
agreed
he needs to realize that he isn’t getting 52 million for 4 years from ANYBODY. If the Yankees aren’t paying it, then no way in hell is anybody else paying it. 4 years ago I thought it was a high deal (he proved me wrong though). No way he’s getting that now.
If Damon really wants to return, then he’ll be back. They’ll get something done. But if Boras intends on screwing this all up for Damon, then there are other options available.
Actually, that's the perfect counter...
…to Boros’ absurdly inflated prices. Don’t just move up to meet in the middle, but rather do the opposite and start moving DOWN. Certainly puts a sense of urgency on Boros and his client… don’t like 2/18? Okay, poof! Now it’s 2/17!
Boras is batshit crazy.
Play today, win today, ‘das it.

Boras says what?
$7 million a year for two years would have been fair. The $18 million the Yankees offered was a gift. Four years for Damon…oh no I don’t think so.
Ok...
MAYBE two @ $8-9M per, and a vesting option (for less $$)… but no more than that.
Boras knows he’s not gonna get four, and he’s not gonna get $13M - he’s an asshole, not an idiot. He also knows he’ll get the best offer from the Yanks if he declines, then Damon winds up playing somewhere else for one year for less money.
Wow....
Johnny done asked Santa for a liiiiitle too much.
