Yanks take CF Hoffman in Rule 5
He's got the arm to play right and the range to play center.
With the Melkett Gardbrera combo slotted for left field, this would give the Yanks 5 OF on the 25-man.
Maybe one of Melky/GGBG is available.
The Yankees lost Zach Kroenke to the D-backs (meaning Arizona added 2 Yankee pitchers this week) and the M's took Kanekoa Texeira, whom Yankees received in the Swisher trade.

If he has speed
Probably See Gardner go, Royals were interested in him
I doubt he's got Gardy speed tho...
Hoffman is 6"3 235.
If he has Gardy speed, the Giants need to call up the Yanks and get this dude on the field.

"Word on the Street"
is that they’d like to send Cabrera to the Braves for D-Lowe. Though that doesn’t exactly make us “younger.”
Cabrera for D-Lowe
i’m a melky fan but would have to do that trade. D-Lowe is on flashy but extremely consistent. exactly what the bombers need on the back end of their rotation. but i cant believe it would be a straight up deal. wouldnt the yanks need to include another player?
Braves are eager to get rid of him
They were talking about even eating some of his contract, maybe just Melky might get it done.

Eating some of the D-Lowe Money
i know he (lowe) had a tough couple of months at the end of last season but man, that is just unbelievable. the rumor mill has the braves ready to eat $5MM out of the $15MM for each of the next three years. with the shortage of starting pitching, i’m amazed he would go that cheap. i wonder if they drafted hoffman because they want to shop melky.
Derek Lowe for Melky Cabrera?
The CPU laughs at me when I try this in MLB 2010.

Aren't they supposed to be trying to get "younger"?
personally, I’d rather keep Melky to play LF and keep Gardner on the bench, rather than play this guy (who doesn’t impress me all that much) on the 25 Man Roster. I don’t want Lowe. He is old. If they want another pitcher, sign Lackey. Or the young guy from Oakland. Or Sheets. Or how about some pitcher named Chien-Ming Wang, who I hear was pretty good not even 2 YEARS AGO? Do NOT give up Melky for an old pitcher like Lowe. Not when you have so many other options that don’t involve giving up your young outfielder who has been, for the most part, starting in the Yankees outfield since 2006.
The Yanks have been getting younger. But you can never have too much starting pitching of any age.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Melky has been up with the Yanks forever.
People wanna talk about Brett Gardner…well, Melky’s not all that much better now is he?
This Hoffman dude seems like he can put up Melky/Gardner numbers, possible better who knows.
He’s expendable. Getting younger is one thing…having a surplus of OFers (all contingent on signing Damon of course..) and making the rotation better?
Look at the Yanks 1-4 if they get Lowe. Damn good.

OK let me rephrase a little
not only is Lowe pretty old, but he’s not that good either.
In 2009 he he had a 4.67 ERA, a Whip of 1.52, and he gave up 232 hits in 195 innings. Not to mention his horrendous second half. And keep in mind, this was while pitching in the National League. And the NL East, which, aside from the Phillies, have no offense whatsoever. Put him in the AL East against the lineups of the Red Sox, Rays, and even Orioles, and I have a feeling that those numbers will go even higher. He’s old. His best days are far behind him and he’s only getting worse.
He’s not a bad pitcher, but what I’m wondering is, why give up Melky (who has been an important player for the Yankees for a long time) for a declining, older pitcher, when there are pitchers like Lackey, Sheets, the guy from Oakland (can’t spell his name), Chien-Ming Wang, and even Aroldis Chapman on the market? All of those guys are younger players than Lowe. All of those guys, when healthy, are better than Lowe as well. I’d much rather go for one of those guys than trade away Melky, who I think is getting better (he’s only 25).
I dunno...
He was very good in 2008, and had a bad 2009.
Is it that he declined that much in one year? Or was it just a bad year?
All the guys you mentioned…Lackey would cost twice as much and is twice as injury prone…and all the other guys, while a low risk contract would be nice…who’s to say they will go for that?
Melky is not getting better. He’ll get his 8 HR in April and May, and not do squat the rest of the year aside from a few hits.
I think this Hoffman dude is just as talented as Melky (and is 25….). We also got Gradnerson to be the everyday CF…so there really is no reason to keep Melky around anymore.
Derek Lowe would be our 4th starter. Playoff tested, played in the AL East before too.
Didn’t Andy have a bad 2008??? Look how he bounced back.
Lowe is a veteran pitcher, who like Andy Pettite, is still pitching for a reason, cuz he’s an innings eater.
The Yankees wanted him last year even after they got CC and AJ…so if they only have to give up Melky, now that they essentially have his replacement in Hoffman…I can’t see why they wouldn’t do it.
After the Braves eat $5 mill per…to take his contract down to $10 mill per, it will be on the terms the Yanks want too.
I can’t see why not, least of which reason is that Cano would be pissed his gangbang buddy is off the squad.
