RedSox Trade Lowell for Who?

what am i missing? they trade a solid hitter for a backup catcher (Max Ramirez,) that no one has ever heard of? ok, it does look at times that lowell needs a wheelchair while playing third following his hip surgery. But is this how far this guy has fallen? to top it off, the sox are gonna eat $7-$8 MM of the $11 MM due to Lowell next year. i wonder if this salary dump is part of the sox plan to go after halliday hard.

I thought Lowell had a pretty good year despite the surgery.

He was murdering us and was in the highlights an awful lot.

Yankees all day.

Mixed Feelings

As much as he was annoying to us, I always thought of him as a bonafide “Red Sox”. As in, he’d always be around…

Oh wells… :P

nah...

The Red Sox make no sense. This guy has killed us and always produced for them. I really don’t get why they keep trying to get rid of him.

I know

Instead of getting rid of wasted crap (Varitek I’m lookin’ at you), they get rid of someone who is a Yankee-killer. I want to hate Lowell, but I can’t.

Youkilis on the other hand…

Lowell came up through our farm.

He’s a good guy, hard to hate. And yeah, always a Yankee killer.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Question now being

do they play Youk at 3rd and use V-Mart at first as their usual lineup?

they’re supposedly trying to get Adrien Beltre

by Wraithpk on Dec 10, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

V Mart should be catching fulltime.

I believe when the Red Sox exercised VMart’s option, they named him the fulltime catcher for 2010. They’ll be looking for a first or third baseman through trade or free agency. Depending on which position they get will determine what position Youk plays.

Sux make no sense at all

If they already have 2 catchers, why the hell would they trade a productive player for a third catcher? Unless they’re willing to start Varitek, which I think would weaken them. I mean, who would you rather have in the lineup? Varitek or Lowell? And who would you rather have catching? V-Mart or Varitek? Both those answers are NOT Varitek, so the sux just weakened themselves right there. Makes no sense at all.

But, as a yankees fan I’m good with it. I want to see Varitek and his 8% at throwing out baserunners out there again next year!!!!

What makes even less sense.

Apparently, Lowell will be playing first base as a Ranger. wtf

not really..

he can’t move anymore, but the glove still works (pause). That usually means 1B.

He’ll be a fine 1B.

Ranger's left side of the infield is already set

with Young and Andrus. Looks like first base and DH for Lowell.

Red Sox and Lowell

I think they just traded him to give themselves more flexibility. Adrian Beltre makes no sense, they’d be paying 9 mil to Lowell plus 8-10 mil to Beltre for not much of an upgrade. They want Adrian Gonzalez but it doesn’t look like the Padres are willing to move him. Prince Fielder’s another possibility but also unlikely. In the end I think they’ll wind up signing either Holliday or Bay and Nick Johnson.

rumor is

they are going for Beltre. Whether it makes sense or not, lol.

by Wraithpk on Dec 10, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

It’ll be expensive for one year but Beltre is a pretty significant upgrade over Lowell at this point. Beltre will post better numbers hitting in Fenway.

It made Dustin Pedroia into an MVP....

what would it do for Beltre….

The post is exactly what I thought of when I read the trade

I hope this is the Red Sox big winter move, I know its not, but if it is, it’s hilarious.

Mike Lowell looks like he’s 55

Max Ramirez

was regarded as one of baseball’s top hitting catcher prospects not too long ago. He lost some value to injury this past year, which is why Lowell straight up is enough to gert him. What role he’ll have is unclear – he could be the backup, taking over for VMart if he isn’t resigned, he could end up at 1st, or he could be used with others in a blockbuster for Adrian Gonzalez, Roy Halladay, or someone else.

Yeah it’s a pretty good trade on both ends. Now you guys better make sure to lock up Beltre.
