Elias free agent rankings released
Before you say the Yanks need to sign player X, please check to see if you would give up a high draft pick for him. FYI, Lackey, Bay and Holliday are all Type-A's. (h/t to BTF)

Randy Johnson
is a type B free agent at 46.
Jason Varitek is a type B as well.
Matsui is MIA
Wonder exactly what they are looking at to arrive at these rankings.

Matsui was projected to be a Type B towards the end of the season
He’s probably not listed yet because he had just filed for FA today. Along with Johnny Damon, Eric Hinske, Xavier Nady, and Jose Molina.
Elias guards their ranking formulas like McDonald’s to their secret sauce.

But Damon made the list.
So that doesn’t seem to be the reason. Could be though. Not trying to argue with you by the way. Just sayin is all.

Filing is inconsiquential
Matsui didn’t make it because he didn’t play enough the last 2 seasons, and as an outfielder he’s compared to the highest value offensive players (OF/1B) where as Varitek gets compared to less productive peers.

I think you overestimate the budget
I suspect they are trying to lower the payroll to $190-195, so I suspect they have just $15-20m to play with.
I am taking Pettite back first and foremost, but I think you assume he’s already back.
I’d try to shore up the OF with Damon and Cameron. Offer Damon 1 year with options, and Cameron 2. If one declines, take the extra money to ensure the other. If neither returns, hold the money and use it for a mid-season acquisition.
