What to do with 62?

No doubt that this will be discussed once again.  Joba showed us that for the most part, he's still highly effective as a reliever and he was awful in the final weeks of the season starting, ERA jumping from around 3.5 to 4.2.

Looking back at the days after the All-Star Break, Chamberlain went 3-0 with I think an 0.87 ERA.  All of his starts were great.  Chamberlain has shown us that he definately has the potential to be a top-tier starter.  His greatest start of the year was probably at Tampa Bay on July 29th.

J. Chamberlain: 8.0 IP, 3H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.  At that point his ERA was 3.58, lower than both CC and AJ.

This is a key season for Joba.  The Joba Rules are probably gone for good.  At this point, I think our starting rotation next year will be:  Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte, Chamberlain, Hughes.  We don't know when we'll get Wang back but he'll probably replace Hughes or Chamberlain.

If the rules are gone next season and he still struggles like he did at the end of this season, I think it's time to send him to the bullpen for good.

Someone told me that they read something about the Yankees sending Joba down to AAA to work it out if he pitches poorly next season.  I don't know where he read this, Fox Sports or something, I can't verify it.

He's gonna be a starter for next season...

the Yanks have made that pretty clear.

I think the Joba Rules are pretty much in effect too, cuz he’s not gonna be going 200IP next season (hopefully the Yanks are the ones limiting him instead of him limiting himself).

He’ll be in the rotation tho. Hughes probably too.

I think guys like Marte, Robertson, Ace, even Gaudin, have all made the idea of forcing Joba or Hughes into the bullpen not a necessity for the start of the season.

Hopefully they show their potential.

Wang hopefulyl will be brought along slowly, then they try putting him back in the rotation with Hughes, and the inevitable “Hughes rules” being placed in the bullpen.

But Joba’s a starter. Hopefully he pitches well enough to where he never sees the bullpen again.

I don’t think its at the point where if he continues his 2009 performance that he’s permanently in the BP….but hopefully he shows some improvement.

I don't know where anyone read the AAA thing...

but it probably would make sense, since his struggles weren’t really just him not being talented, it was locating and all a that crap.

Maybe the fact they have guys like Gaudin and Ace will let them keep Joba and/or even Hughes in AAA for a while to build back their starter skills.

I still think his best outing was the outing against the Red Sox

12 strikeouts in 5 innings is pretty amazing even in a losing effort. This was during the time the Red Sox held an undefeated streak against us. Does anybody remember that start or am I just imagining things?

Yankees all day.

I was there for that game.

he looked like complete crap in the first inning but then just went beastmode. It was a ridiculously cold and shitty/rainy day I ended up leaving early when it became a blowout. Melancon pitched in that game too, I think he walked like 3 or 4 guys.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

I was there

you’re not imagining things. Bay sucked the life out of everything with a 3 run homer in the first (stupid Canadian), but then Joba all of a sudden figured it out and struck out like 8 batters in a row and 12 over 5 innings. Damon also hit a monster shot of Beckett, but they couldn’t get anything else and the pen gave up a ton of runs. Terrible game in the night. Joba in innings 2-5 was the bright spot.

Oh and Joba will be a starter no questions asked.

23 years old, first full season pitching in the most difficult division in the world. 157 IP 4.75 era. That’s not terrible everything considered. It’s certainly not good at all but it could have been alot worse. He made it through the year healthy and at times looked utterly dominant and at times looked completely lost. These are growing pains and building blocks. Next year he won’t have any crazy innings limits and won’t be skipped for weeks at a time. I’m thinking he can probably go about 180 ip with a 115 or so era+.

Glad to hear I wasn't imagining things, hahaha.

Those knockout innings were fucking fantastic. The rest of the game was a complete blur though. I don’t remember anything other than that last fistpump + roar Joba made because its constantly shown on the YES network commercials.

Yankees all day.

Joba

deserves at least one more full year of starting. if he’s still ineffective, let’s re-evaluate then.

way too early for the Joba Debate. we have all off-season…
