Congratulations Yankees Fans
Beat the Phillies fair and square, but they got a pretty good challenge. Phils made it past the "embarrassment threshold" of five games and proved that 2008 wasn't a fluke. That said, I want a rematch. Next week, if possible. That was a ton of fun; I'm actually just as sad that it's over as I am that the Phillies lost.
I think I'm happiest for CC Sabathia (always loved that guy) and Mariano Rivera, whose years as a dominant force are inevitably winding down.
Again, congrats, and we'll see you in the Bronx next June 15-17, and hopefully October...
Enjoy the parade.

thanks
But please point to evidence that Rivera’s years as a force are “winding down.”

Well, he’s 40, and his fastball isn’t as fast. Although it’s still (obviously) very effective, we’re a lot closer to the end than the beginning. When Mo hangs ‘em up that will be a sad day – and hard for the organization. I think a lot of younger Yankee fans just assume that we’re going to always have a great closer, but Mo is unique.

well, he is closer to the end than the beginning because I doubt he’ll pitch for another 15 years, but his effectiveness this year was just as good as it’s always been. His cutter is down about 3 mph from 13 years ago, but his command is better than it’s ever been.

Thanks
It truly was a great series.
And we would also be very happy to serve you again next October :)
This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

Thankx...
tho, I really don’t know where you get that with MO.
He’s basically been injured since June…seen about 4-5 MPH die off his fastball since around last year this time…yet…he just showed to all who watched in October who the best closer in baseball is. If that shows sign of decline….maybe Lidge/Nathan/Papelbon/Fuentes/Broxton…should all retire?(tho I’m sure many wouldn’t care at this point if they did..)
Hoffman’s still in the league..and he’s no where near MO.
Going out on top is one thing. Having a reason to go out…entirely another.

human physiology
Simply the fact that Rivera is going to be 40. Even all-time greats decline, and he definitely has more good years behind him than in front of him. The fact that he’s still doing what he’s doing at his age is pretty remarkable.
It’ll be interesting (at least for me, since I have no vested interest, unlike you guys) to see what happens when Rivera “loses it.” Will it be gradual, or will he just start getting hammered? I’m leaning toward “gradual” since he’s always been a great mix of velocity, movement, and command. He’s not a flamethrower who will go to hell when he loses his fastball.

the thing is....
many people thought that about him THIS season.
I know exactly what your saying…eventually..he’s gotta slow down.
Its just that aside from that point, which was only about 2 games (and at a point when Jason Bay and Evan Longoria were white hot at the plate…) he’s been the same old MO.
I mean, its really not like we’re talking about a starter here. I’m sure, as a Phillie fan, you know that Jamie Moyer was quite effective for you guys…he’s got MO by a couple years doesn’t he?
It may be 2010 he declines….it also may be 2015. Hell, he could pitch till he’s 50. He just hasn’t shown any evidence of it.
The way he throws, his velocity can go all the way down to 85 and he’d still be effective. It seems the older he gets, the more movement.
Its just not something that when brought up, gets a lot of people to brush it off. Especially when even if he was a bit more of a “normal” closer…he’d be better than 95% of the ones out there. He’s still the best in the business. And there’s some good closers out there.

Thanks
It’s been so long since the Yanks have won the WS. I was 14 when they last won against the Mets. And one of my best friends in High School was a huge Mets fan and rubbing it in his face was SO much fun! I’m sure you guys get plenty of that, seeing as the Mets are currently a joke (although I doubt they’ll be a walk in the park next year).
Thanks for coming over and congratulating us. Wonder if other writers will do the same. Now, you want to un-ban me from the Good Phight? lol
Thanks again. See you next year.

You have to beat the best to be the best, and the Phillies were clearly the best. That is one tough team, and most of the roster isn’t going anywhere. If you can get the pitching straightened out, we may well be tipping our caps to you next year.
