Greatest Yankees of all time
I've been a Yankee fan for 50 years now. I started listening to them during the 1958 World Series.
It turned out to be a great start. Yankees were down 3 games to 1 and won the Series ! Bob Turley, their ace pitcher, won 3 games in that series. Then came the Mantle/Maris era, Munson/Jackson years, Martinez/O'Neill/Cone years with a few periods of frustration thrown in (1960 - Mazeroski homer in Game7; 2001 - Rivera blowing a rare save in Game7; 2004 - losing to Beantown after being up 3 games to none; 1981 - Losing to Dodgers after being up 2-0).
Anyway, here's my list of Yankee greats (in this order) : RUTH, GEHRIG, DIMAGGIO, MANTLE, FORD.
Curious about some of your favorites (past & current).
I was fortunate to see Mantle (my idol) and Ford play. I guess I've been lucky to be a Yankee fan all my life and to watch this exciting new team to bring more Yankee pennants & championships. Today I proudly wear my Yankee 'Mantle 7' jersey to every game I attend at Yankee Stadium.
GO Yankees tonight. Let's get #27 all wrapped up !!!

5) Rivera. Yes, he’s climbed that high.
No…unless he gets 10 WS rings…he’ll never top Yogi. Even then…I don’t think so.

actually...
I don’t think so.
I know so.
Yogi = 5.
Some player’s gonna have to do a whole hell of a lot to top Yogi.
Even as good as MO is…its really not even close.

50 years eh Lord Quas?
(well, maybe the “Lord Quas” thing you might not get…those kids and their rap music and all…)
Definitely agree with all a that.
ITs really funny that I actually sat through about 5 minutes of “analysts”(aka idiots) on FOX telling me that Derek Jeter is the greatest Yankee of all time.
Of recent year? Yea, of course that argument can be made. We all know the players of the past 20 or so years, probably only Mattingly comes close to Jeet in terms of who we all call a “great Yankee”.
I just can’t understand how grown men, baseball people at that (or at least they call themselves that) can call Jeter the greatest Yank of all time.
The top 5 of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Dimaggio and Yogi Berra…pretty much in cement as the top 5. Could argue that more than a couple of those guys are top 10 players in the history of basball.
Yet…Derek Jeter? Better than them? Unbelievable…….

You rank Jeter above Mo?
Jeter may be the greatest SS of all time by the time he is finished, but Mo is unquestionably the greatest closer of all time and has been for about 6-7 years. That he continues to pitch so well into his 40s vaults him potentially in to the greatest PITCHER of all time. Though I wouldn’t say he is, he belongs in the top 10 for sure, which is remarkable for a reliever.

that's why Jeter and MO are arguable...
you can say MO’s the best closer of all time (overall pitcher?…you can’t go there. A great SP>CP any time).
Best SS of all time? Maybe..tho, that’s really because that guy playing 3rd came to the Yankees. You can make an argument for either.
It usually depends on what day, cuz usually as soon as MO’s reminding me why he’s great (this postseason for example…ask all the other playoff teams the importance of a closer), then Jeter goes and earns his first pie of the season..in the most clutch of all clutch times (….foreshadowing much?).
The greatest closer of all time definitely deserves top 10 mention when talking about greatest pitchers. THe old-timers can talk about how there was no save stat or how pitchers threw the whole game or closers used to routinely go 3+ innings.
Yet…he’s a closer. Probably the GOAT…yet, a closer. I heard Jeter make fun of MO and I’m sure they rib him all the time..he comes in and throws 10 pitches and that’s it. Now, they’rer 10 great pitches and it ends the game…but 10 pitches is 10 pitches.
So, to answer the question. Right now? MO > Jeter, cuz of what I’ve seen this playoff run and what a closer means and can do if you have a good one or bad one. Yet…tonight? Maybe it could go back to Jeter (and…before he DP’ed in the 9th on Monday…it could have been Jeter).

Fair enough
I just value Mo more than Jeter because we have other bats and Jeter’s defense isn’t typically game changing. Not that I don’t love DJ, but Mo shortens every game to 21-24 outs for the opponents, which is a major disadvantage to opponents.

and see that's where you can go and say...
well, we got other bats..yet, Tex doesn’t have all those RBI’s if Jeter doesn’t have the .400OBP that he had…which, all those RBI’s as well as Damon and A-Rod…those leads we had cuz Jeet was on base…MO probably doesn’t have all those saves.
Both are important. Both are great at what they do. This is probably one of those Apples vs. Oranges type thing.
One starts the game…the other finishes. Either way..what each do is important and why the W is the result.

I think Mo should start the game j/k
Yes, both are extremely valuable and have pillars of our success this past decade-plus.

Jeter is way too high on your list, Ford and Mo belong in front of him
To anyone that thinks Jeter is more important than Mo, ask yourself this, could the Yankees have won those WS without Jeter, probably, could they have without the best closer of all time, proibably not. Jeter is a great Yankee, but nowhere near as important as Mo. And ranking him above Whitey Ford is just beyond words.

Jeter
I’m aware of his limits but when he retires he will be the second best shortstop in baseball history. I’ll take the second best shortstop over the best closer. As in the thread above, I can see the argument for Mo but even the best 70 innings per year are only 70 innings. The Yankee World Series in this era would have been at least at as risk if Jeter wasn’t there as they would have been if Mo hadn’t been.
Ford is a closer call. It’s not beyond words either way and I bet 100 experts would split close to 50-50 on it.
