Ninth Inning Frustration from Jeter and Tex?

Yankees vs Phillies coverage

Star-divide

I know we fell behind big early...but in the late innings as we were getting back into it, I can't help but be a bit frustrated with Jeter grounding into a DP (no outs, 1st and 3rd , down 3). Then after Damon battles to get on, Tex fans badly to end it. I know it was a tough spot to be in, but those two at bats by Jeter and Tex (who are usually clutch) frustrated me a lot.  I know A.J. pitched awful and this and that...but am I being too hard on Jeter and Tex?

yes on DJ

no on Tex. he’s done virtually nothing in the WS. at least DJ’s done moderately well. we really need Tex’s bat to get hot.

but overall, when a team allows 8 runs, they rarely win (only 14% this year). so it’s primarily the pitchers.

yes

Matsui wouldn’t have stayed in the game to play the outfield anyway. So why would they have him run? If Pena pinch ran and stole second, then they may have walked Jeter and faced Damon with the Bases Loaded and nobody out.

Although thats all speculation now. We’ll never know.

Hard or not, all of 'em need to start swinging smarter

Personally, I think Jeter should’ve bunted. Yes, he’s usually Mr. Clutch and whatnot, but he had a mostly crappy game and bunting would’ve allowed Matsui (who Girardi should’ve had Pena run for) to get to second and caused at most one out. Defensively, Tex is the man…but his last at bat…horrible! Swings on not one but two dirt balls?! It appears to me that a good many Yankees have forgotten how to even swing when balls come across the plate (Brett Gardner, I’m talking to you! Much love on that stunning catch though.) because they’ve taken a whole lot more strike outs looking than I like this postseason.

You don't bunt with Derek Jeter.

the fact Jeter had a crappy game was more reason to think he’s got this….but he didn’t.

No, your right...

if it was anyone else..there’d be 90 fanposts saying to DFA or trade him for bullpen help….for example if this was Nick Swisher or Robinson Cano…literally 90 fanpost harping on the suck of what happened (and not a single one of them 1st grade worthy either..)

I could just imagine if it was A-Rod….it would be like October didn’t happen…

But, as with any player who did what Jeter did….its just…meh. That’s what happens. Is he not clutch anymore? Do you expect him to DP every time out now? No, he’s still Jeter and I know I had my champagne ready with him up….and I will again if the same thing happens Wednesday.

As for Tex? Well, its the same thing, except for the fact he obviously hasn’t been here long enough to get Jeter’s free pass.

Tex could have had a better AB. He could have had a lot of better AB’s. We should thank Brad Lidge for pegging Tex on Sunday…cuz Tex probably strikes out if Lidge is throwing strikes.

I still expect Tex to be clutch too Wednesday. I do with them all, cuz that’s what they’ve shown this whole season.

In fact, Isn’t Jeter the only one sans Pie?

I think part of Jeter getting a pass

is that he’s hitting close to .400 in the WS. Getting fooled on one pitch doesn’t negate all of that because it happened to be in a big spot. I have never understood that logic.

Every time a hitter gets in the box, they do everything that they can to get on base. It’s not like DJ goes up there in the 9th when it’s extremely important and goes “Well, OK, now it’s time to try my hardest.”

I think that calling someone “clutch” or “unclutch” is vastly overused by sportswriters and fans who want something to talk about, and 99 times out of 100 is the byproduct of chance.

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

Down by two you can’t bunt Jeter in that situation.

i don't know

Jeter’s DP was some bad luck. he does hit into quite a few DPs, but at the same time down by 2 in the 9th you can’t bunt him. Girardi should’ve pinch ran Pena for Matsui. that speed would’ve made the DP harder to turn, with Matsui running it would’ve been easy to turn. i know Jeter has a good BA this series, and he’s got the reputation of being clutch but think about it even a .400 BA (as good as that is) still means an out 6/10 times.

Tex, i was more frustrated with, even though the DP was a momentum killer. Damon goes into his battle mode, and fights everything off until he gets a pitch to hit. then Tex comes up takes a good hittable pitch for a strike, and swings at two well below the knees that would’ve been called balls. i know he’s struggling right now, but i don’t if he’s just not seeing the ball well right now or what.

there’s a few players for the Yanks still struggling, not just Tex. i think the team as a whole is taking too many good pitches.

Let's Be Realistic About Tex

Don’t get me wrong …… Teixeira has been a huge upgrade from Giambi at first base. His defense has added immensely to the Yankees and he had very good (but not awesome) productivity offensively.

My problem with Tex is that I think the hype exceeds the reality. Yeah ….. he gets his HR’s and RBI’s (Abreu got his RBI’s, too) but …… I don’t think Tex is a particularly good clutch hitter and, let’s face it, he was in the .280 range for most of the latter part of the season.

Tex is a very good player but …… I just don’t buy into the hype that he is a superstar. He is more like a Carlos Beltran player in my opinion. He is defintely an asset to the team but ……. is he a $180M superstar? I don’t think so. I think it would be better if we all accept him for what he is ……. a very good player who contributes in many ways to the team. But …… he just isn’t an elite player. And, for what its worth, I think anyone who would vote for Tex as MVP over Jeter is a complete sap …..

QUESTION: Who bats after Texeira?

ANSWER: The other team.
I saw this on one of the Phillies’ blogs. Harsh, but true. Hopefully he snaps out of it soon…

Mr. Hyde Burnett

You never know what to expect in Burnett when he comes to the mound.
Seems to me he gets all freaked out in pressure moments.
He is the reason we lost Game5. The Yankees came on strong but just lost out in the end. Never expected Jeter to bounce into that double play though.

Burnett making 16.5 M a year……………………ridiculous.
Tex is an excellent player, but 20M a year……….gimme a break !

The good news

is that there is a right hander (Pedro) starting tonight so Tex and them with be batting left handed
