Tex and Jeter finish second and third to Mauer
Nothing to complain about - Mauer deserved it. Though Jeter should've been ahead of Tex.

Its possible
that some writers still believe Jeter is “overrated,” though it’s hard to ignore the season he had.
What upsets me
Is that neither Jeter nor Tex got even ONE first place vote. Mauer deserved it, maybe even by this much, but giving Miguel Cabrera a first place vote and not Jeter OR Tex?
I didn’t think either of them would win, maybe not even be very close, but not even ONE vote?
"We're only going to score 17 points?"
Not ONE first place vote for Jeter or Tex?
I mean, Mauer got 27 of the first place votes. Fine. But the last one was given to Miguel Cabrera. CABRERA? Come on. Who voted for that? Cabrera was on the team that choked their division away to a team that was 6 out at the beginning of the month. Jeter and Tex both deserved a First Place vote more the Cabrera. Mauer however, of course, deserved it.
What bugs me is that every time Jeter has a great year, he’s overshadowed by someone who has a better year. Why couldn’t he have had this year last year? No way the midget would have gotten the MVP over him. Now Jeter’s lost to both Twins stars in MVP votes. How sad. Hopefully he gets it eventually.
it was pretty valuable to the team
when Cabrera got in an altercation with his wife after partying with the White Sox and Leyland had to pick him up from jail

My guess
is that the Cabrera vote was a homer vote. Maybe the same guy that voted for Verlander for the Cy Young.
I thought so too
but it was actually a Japanese reporter in Seattle.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

true now and in ’99, but he totally deserved it over Morneau in ’06.

Yep.
And we knew who was going to MVP. I’m really not worried about tallying up the rest of the votes.
"Have faith in the Yankees, my son. Think of the great DiMaggio."
Bottom line for me
Mauer had a historically great season for a catcher, and was on a team that never would have made the playoffs without him.
Without one of Jeter, Tex, or A-Rod, the Yankees are still a playoff team.
Mauer WAR: 8.2
Jeter: 7.4
Tex: 5.1
Jeter deserved 2nd, and he definitely deserved it in 2006. But the award shouldn’t be about makeup calls.
Funny enough, the actual WAR winner this year was Ben Zobrist at 8.6, but I understand that we’re not going to give much preference to a super-utility player on a bad team.
I don’t really get the votes for Tex, considering he was 7th in terms of “value” for AL teams that made or almost made (Detroit) the playoffs. He did a bit more than what a 1st basemen is supposed to do (which is give 30/100), whereas Jeter clearly overperformed for his position.

Oh Well
Derek has five things Mauer doesn’t have…
I’m not surprised nor do I really care at this point. Derek got cheated in ’06 (still ticked about that).
I think Tex deserved 2nd place. He was valuable to us greatly and anyone who can’t see that is obviously blind. Derek was 3rd because of the haters.
the guy who voted for miguel cabrera
was he one of the same two guys who voted for Cabrera when Arod won his 2007 MVP? i think some of the voters are just idiots from detriot
who knows?
2007 shocked me that A-Rod wasn’t unanimous. I mean, that was one of the greatest hitting seasons of ALL TIME!!!!!!! Not just that season. That was one of the best seasons of ALL TIME!!!!! And Cabrera gets a vote? Is that a joke?
