Funny quotes from ignorant fans of other message boards. The guy wants us all to throw out stats like FIP, WHIP, ERA+, and WAR, and award the Cy Young entirely on ERA and winning percentage.
""CY YOUNG"....WINningest P ever!.....Why is it called "CY YOUNG" award, if W's don't matter? I don't think Wins are over-rated. I think it should be all about winning % and ERA. F- whip and all this new-age-stat-crap! If you have a great winning % and low ERA, nothing else matters. 17-4 and 2.48??or whatever it was should have won it for Carp....Wainwright had a 6-0 lead in the 8th inning and the bullpen blew his 20th W, he should have been 2nd at 19-8 and 2.61?? and Lincecum 3rd, 15-8, sheesh! Them 2 idiots should be stripped of their votes..."

lol!
well…I kinda agree with this mope, Carpenter was probably more deserving than Lincecum…probably Wainwright too.
His reasoning is just a wee bit off, but yea, I kinda don’t see how Lincecum was the best pitcher in the NL.
Maybe the argument of Wainwright and Carpenter stealing some of each other’s votes?
I’d be pissed too. Kinda like a Pet Hentgen over Andy Pettite type thing. I see why he’s pissed (I think he’s pissed….)

nah, Lincecum deserved it.
Lincecum: 15-7, 225.1 IP, 2.48 ERA, 2.34 FIP, 3.84 K/BB, 176 ERA+, 8.2 WAR
Carpenter: 17-4, 192.2 IP, 2.24 ERA, 2.78 FIP, 3.79 K/BB, 183 ERA+, 5.6 WAR
Wainwright: 19-8, 233 IP, 2.63 ERA, 3.11 FIP, 3.21 K/BB, 157 ERA+, 5.7 WAR
Lincecum and Carpenter had very comparable statistics. Carpenter had a .24 better ERA, but Lincecum’s FIP was .44 better. Their ERA+’s were close, but I feel like the real difference is in that Lincecum pitched 32.2 more innings at equal performance. That explains the large disparity in WAR, and why Lincecum won the award.

I agree.
Lincecum had the better stats.
Its just that overall, its pretty close. Since its pretty close, I go with the dude that had a team that went to the Playoffs.
In the AL it was different cuz CC was really the only one from a contender that was in consideration, Grienke, Felix and Doc all not sniffing the playoffs.

Yeah, it was pretty much a toss-up between Lincecum and Carpenter, but I never liked judging an MVP or Cy-Young candidate by how well the rest of their team did. A guy could win all 32 of his starts, and have his team lose every other game. Is he any less deserving because the other pitchers on his team didn’t do their jobs, or because the offense didn’t give good run support? Same for an MVP candidate, a guy could hit a HR in every at bat, but if his team’s pitching sucks and the rest of the offense does nothing, they might still do poorly as a team.

I can see that.
Its just, in this situation, since it was a toss-up….that’s why Carpenter deserved it more.
Yea, its not Timmy’s fault his team isn’t that good. But Carpenter basically equal numbers up.
When its close like that, I choose who was on the better team.
If there was a clear cut winner from a sub-par team, like Gienke in the AL..I have no problem with that.

I think ultimately, Lincecum won it because he put up the same quality numbers over 32 more innings pitched. I really feel it was the IP quantity that won it for him, if Carpenter had pitched the same innings at the same quality, he probably would have won.
