Another Way to Put Down the "Buy a Championship Argument"

If you are a Twins, Marlins, Nationals, Rays or Orioles (insert other small-market team here) fan it may not be that your team does not have enough money, it is that they are not spending it.  All of the aforementioned teams are in the top six for operational income.  In fact the Marlins and Nationals had almost $45 million of revenue respectively!  If the Marlins spent about $37 million of that money their payroll would have been approximately the same size as the playoff-making Rockies, while making only $9 million less. That is approximately the same amount as Nick Johnson's contract over two years, and he played a whopping 25 games for them this year.  So next time you hear someone say that the Yankees bought their championship, tell them that their team had the money to do it too.

There's an even better way

The problem in baseball:

Not all teams are dedicated to winning. Yes, baseball is a business and a good investment for a prospective owner. However, most owners are more interested in turning profits than in winning. The Steinbrenners are very dedicated to winning, so they actually lose money some years. Most owners will not do that. So if people want their team to win more, they have to tell the owner to stop pocketing so much money, and put that money into the team.

I voted for lost money

If they all lost money for just 1 yr these idiots would see a better team and maybe go to a game and buy a jersey and etc…They would be so phyched ownership actually tried they would all have aneurysms and I would not have to listen to stupid repeat what he heard from retarded ever again.A guy can dream can’t he?

we all saw the difference...

The Mets, in recent years, have actually tried to be competitive, and they’ve fielded some really good teams in recent years. Of course, they’ve been plagued with injuries, busts, and historic late season collapses recently, so they haven’t accomplished much, but they have the right idea.

I think

you’re confusing revenues and income. Profits (or income) = revenues less expenses.

The Marlins had $139M in revenues, and the Nationals had $184M in revenues last year. If you’ve got an accurate statement on MLB clubs’ operating expenses, I’d love to see it. Curious to see what the profits look like for some of these clubs.

We won't really know for sure...

Forbes magazine sometimes has estimations for the revenues of the teams, and we know how high the payrolls are for each team, but we don’t know what other expenses they have, and the Forbes revenue numbers are just estimations, they aren’t necessarily correct. I don’t think baseball teams will ever want to disclose that info, because then the fans of the cheap owners will know that their team isn’t winning because the owner wants to have a nice fat paycheck, and might stop supporting the team.

by Wraithpk on Nov 20, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

I'll go out on a limb

and add that perhaps a lot of these small-market owners do not even place their teams as their top business interest. As long as the franchise remains slightly profitable, it’s collateral, credibility, etc. to obtain loans to fund their other prioritized business ventures.

Take Ranger’s owner Tom Hicks, for example, who is now selling up to 49% of TEX so that he can repay bankers part of the $525m loan of which had defaulted on.

And then there were the Marlins...

whose payroll is annually about 10% of their estimated revenue. Cheap…

The funniest thing

is that fans of other teams think that WE feel hollow about the Yankees winning because they have the highest payroll. The truth, though, is that I think all of us would agree that we don’t care how much more the Yankees spend than everyone else, we just want championships at whatever the cost.

by Wraithpk on Nov 21, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions

Players

are supposed to give it their best when they play on the field, ownership should give it their best off of it. That means play hard, and do whatever it takes, including the financial aspect. The Yankees do both of these and that why they have 27 world cahmpionships.

by PinstripedinMN on Nov 21, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

most owners...

just don’t care about winning, the team is just a financial investment they want to make money from. Other fans shouldn’t be mad at the Yankees for trying to win, they should be mad at their own owners for not trying.

This sounds too much like a justification

we won it fair and square. If you want to cry about it and try and rain on our parade then I don’t have the time to waste on a pointless argument.

We were the best team in baseball and played by all of the rules, we have nothing to explain or defend.

the only ones complaining are Muts and Red Sux fans

you know the KC Mets and Pittsburgh Red Sox dont have the revenue to spend….like the Beatles say Money Cant buy me love..with some intelligence though and some clutch performances it may buy you a playoff berth and possibly a chance to win a world championship..Last I checked the Muts were the worst team $ can buy both in 92’ and now 09’ and the Sux just spent 140 million to get bounced out in the 1st rd and have the Mitchell Report and their 04’ championship blow up in their face in lieu of David " I No Do STeroids" Ortiz and Hollywood Manny being outed as roid users..cant wait till that fat fake bastard Schillings’ curtain comes down…What a great yr so far …btw throughly enjoyed the Beli Cheats getting pimped out by Beli Cheats arrogance on MNF …keep the hate coming losers ….THUUUUUUUUUH YANKEEES WINNNNN!

by MUSKRAT on Nov 23, 2009 2:38 AM EST reply actions

One explanation I've read is that ownership groups

typically have a lot of debt to pay down after they borrow millions to purchase teams. Given the lack of revenue / costs transparency, it’s impossible to verify. People need to remember that MLB revenues fund staff in the front office, minors, stadiums, and all sorts of other expenses. Many teams probably could spend another $10 or $20 million, but that’s not going to put them anywhere close to the Yankees. If the Boston Red Sox spent another $30 million on payroll (on top of around $130 million), they’d still be $40 million behind the Yankees in total payroll.

Unfortunately for your argument, the Yankees DID buy the 2009 championship. They committed $420 million to the contracts for Teixeira, Sabathia and Burnett. If any other team had spent like this, they would probably be in dire financial straits after a few years, or forced to play AAA players rather than sign available free agents. Without these guys (and Pettitte, another free agent) the Yankees would not have been able to win the WS, let alone make the playoffs.

Would you like us to apologize?

should we apologize for the creation of free agency? Should we apologize that George Steinbrenner took the Yankees from a 10 million dollar franchise in 1972 to about a 1.5 billion dollar franchise today?

Here is why your arguments are tired:

1) All teams “buy” their success. Name me the last world series winner that was entirely home-grown players, with 0 free agent signees.

2) Money doesn’t buy championships. If that was true, the team with the highest payroll would win every year.

3) The Yankees also payed out almost 130 million dollars last year to the other teams in the league in revenue sharing, and another 30 million in luxury tax. That’s right, not only did we buy our own players, but we bought your players for you. So stop whining or we’re gunna stop giving you money.

4) The Yankees care about winning. The Steinbrenners spend money because they want to win. Seriously, how can you find fault in that? If you want to point a finger, point it at the owners who don’t reinvest anything into fielding a better team. They are the problem in baseball.

by Wraithpk on Nov 30, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

the unfortunate part of your argument.....

is the Yankees 2009 payroll is fairly similary to the 2008 payroll.

Did we “buy the championship”…or did we simply make sure we kept the same payroll and field a better team?

The Yanks could’ve left the team as is an not sign anyone..and had a payroll similar to the next 4 teams.

People who have no clue always recite this “$420 million” to make it seem like that’s what they spent. Yea….over the next 8 years they spent that. Typical Red Sox fan way of altering the truth (maybe if you said they spent about $60 million this offseaon on FA….)
