what do you want us to say?
What can we say? There are no words for what Brad allow to happen yesterday. The worst part is we all knew eventually it was gonna happen! All we can do is play good today, and hope for a miracle:) I have much more respect for the Yankees now than before the series.

not to be an a-hole or anything...
but what didn’t make you respect them before the series? Cliche, played out talk about Payroll and media hype/bashing aside?
I’ll add….the Yankees have been making fools of closers the whole year…so I hope you didn’t overlook their ninth inning prowess.

I personally hate the Yankees because they think they invented baseball.
Its unfair to most other teams that NY is able to have a monopoly on the free agency market. Just due the the scope of how large the city is and the kind of revenue they have, its almost impossible for smaller teams to compete with NY.
You like it because your from NY, but what if you were in Baltimore and want a Free agent? You know they Yankees are gonna over pay. There should be some kind of Anti-Trust thing going on there. You can just buy a world series. We earned our title, we drafted good players and developed them, we traded talent and developed them to have have enough to trade for Lee. While New York just goes out and signs who they want. Baseball needs a salary cap, but the union will never allow it.
That is why I didn’t have respect for NY! But that being said, its not the players fault that baseball allows a monopoly. I am proud that our team was able to defend a title, rather less vs the Yankees. There is no reason we at Philly should be ashamed, we have a GREAT team, and we got it the old fashion way. Hard word and practice! Not by buying up the entire free agency market. No disrespect to the fans of the team, but to baseball as a whole for not getting the thing right.

fair enough...
Yet, that’s what I was talking about, the hate “other than the cliche” nonsense.
I get the hate thing, I really do.
But they’ve done this before. And teams can go back and look at their FA’s in the past and thank the ground the Yanks step on for signing guys like Jaret Wright and Giambi.
I just don’t understand the non-respect thing. Cuz they’ve been winning like this all year, showing as much heart as those non-big budget teams in the late 90’s.
I mean I respect the Phillies. Did since last year. I know who’s on that team. I don’t respect them any less now that the Yanks are up 3-1.
I just don’t understand how you can say hate = now you respect them after they’re up in the series.
Or is it just a seeing it for yourself type thing?

Yeah, Giambi was a mistake.

not really...
towards the end…yea, which is probably could happen with Tex and A-Rod when they are making $70 mill a year when they are 40…..
In the beginning, Giambino was very good tho. That 2004 collapse as well as the 2003 WS loss really hurt a few players reps.
Giambi RAKED in 2003.

Giambi
The Yankees signed Giambi to be a perennial MVP candidate and he did that in 1 year out of 7, which was 2002. After that he had a few years (2003, 2005, 2006) where he still hit for power but he never came close to the offensive force he was in Oakland. Would the Yankees have knowingly paid $120 mil for the numbers Giambi put up in New York? Absolutely not. Not to mention the fact that his incredibly horrible defense weakened the infield a lot and also created a lot of inflexibility with other signings.

He hit for power in 2008 too
Giambi’s career in NY was not a failure. At all. In 5 of the seven years he put up very strong numbers. He didn’t fail.
However, did he earn the 120 million the Yankees payed him? In 2002 he did. In the 2003 ALCS he did. Nowhere else, however, did he really earn the money he got with big hits or a big season.

that's what I'm saying
Giambi’s career wasn’t a total fail.
Was he the .330 40HR 130+ RBI guy with .400OBP?
No, that’s why I say he should have brought his trainer from there over…
He was good, not $120 mill worth, but definitely good. Fielding? He has no range, tho he wasn’t as bad as it makes him out to be. Yank fans were spoiled before him with Tino and Mattingly being expert 1B defensively (both of whom…probably better than Tex.)

Yophillybro...
First of all, I’ve been following some of your posts over here and want to offer kudos… you’ve been bringing the trash talk and banter one would expect from a fan of the opposition, but it’s all been in fun and the focus has been baseball, as it should be. We’ve seen a number of other teams’ folks around here who have NOT brought anything like that… you know, trollish behavior, the four letter word posts, the whining about some sort of umpiring conspiracy in favor of the Yankees, Mariano throws a spitball, etc. Wanna thank you for a higher level of discourse, I for one appreciate that, bro.
I get you on the hate. I can’t feel it myself because as you say, I’m a NYY fan, but I feel what you’re saying in general. In my defense, I’ve been a Yankee fan since 1978, through 14 years of no playoff appearances, a whole bunch of free agents who never quite worked out, the dysfunctional musical manager days, the early 1990s years where we were the absolute dregs of the AL east… so please forgive me for feeling the Yankees do not have some sort of cosmic advantage. Folks outside NY sometimes see the payroll (which is invariably played up the media) and don’t see that the Yankee universe has more than its own share of problems, too.
If the money could buy our championships, why haven’t we won the WS since 2000? The truth is, money buys some margin for error… but it still takes smart acquisitions, good player development, sound management, team chemistry… not to mention starting pitching and defense, timely hitting, and all the rest, to win the WS. The Phillies have climbed that mountain and as a NYY fan I certainly hope we get back to the top now.
As an aside, the money brings its share of problems, too. For example, if a high priced free agent comes to NY and plays mediocre ball, there’s pressure to play him BECAUSE he has a big contract… and not all players perform well in NY due to the various pressures (media, Steinbrenners…), with Carl Pavano, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Jaret Wright, and many more as token examples.
The Phillies aren’t completely immune to this stuff, though. Midseason the Phillies came up with Cliff Lee while the Yankees, who desperately needed another starting pitcher, ended up with Chad Gaudin. And the majority of players on the Yankees roster were homegrown or other teams’ castoffs, not high-priced free agents. (Though we certainly have some of those, too.)
Where would you guys be this postseason without Lee?
Don’t get me wrong, the Phillies have a GREAT team, you guys should be proud! These games have made me nervous, start to finish. Your lineup is scary. Your pitching is frustratingly good. We need to bring our “A” game to close out this WS, otherwise we’ll still lose. I think more than a few folks around here have newfound respect for the Phillies, too!

i know the yankees are in a huge market and stuff, but so are the mets, boston chicago and LA are big markets too, not as big as new york but they are still big enough to go out and sign a big player or two. and to add one more thing i was listening to the brian kenny show a week ago during a travel day and he made a great point that the owner of the royals, the glass family, has more money then the stienbrenners.
now what ticks me off is saying “we earned our title” so we havent earned what weve done this season? that annoys the crap out of me, we have earned it and we will.

yea..
we’ve seen in years past what outspending will do…nothing.
They may have tried to outspend again…but they still earned it.
You can;t tell me the Angels and Phillies weren’t capable of winning this series.
You’d don’t play on the field with your wallet.

Not to disagree
the Yankees certainly spend a ton of money. And they get a lot of great players. But they also do develop from within. Half their team is homegrown. Jeter, Cano, Rivera, Pettitte, Posada, Melky, Gardner, Joba, Hughes, Robertson, Aceves, Coke, CERVELLI!!!!!!!
So, Im just saying that the Yankees do develop from within as well. Had to get that out there.

first do a spell check...
there’s no way you can call us “not that good”. these games have been some of the best baseball seen in years. maybe going back as far as the yanks/sox series in 04. and it comes down to simple things and simple plays that its 3-1 yanks, instead of a possible 3-1 phils. but that’s baseball. Damon made one of the smartest plays in my recent memory and Charlie Manuel made 2 or 3 of the dumbest (not starting Lee, running a shift on Tex, putting in Lidge in general against that part of the lineup). there’s still hope, but that hope has been doused with a strong helping of reality playing a smart team who plays very well in all aspects of the game, and needing to win 3 straight. but hey, the yanks just won 3 straight…so can we. Go Phils!!

There you go
they said something. Are you happy now? I have no problem with Jimmy Rollins saying what he said. He’s a professional athlete they are supposed to be confident. He does look a little dumb now though. He hasn’t done much so far this series. He probably motivated the Yankees a little bit also. It’s always better to keep your mouth shut.

I don't think the Yankees needed much more motivation other than the series itself.
I wish Ryan Howard was right handed. Would give us more balance.

Really?
The Philly lineup, from a balance perspective, seems as balance as any. Especially with the emergence of Jason Werth as a superstar hitter. Your 3-5 hitters are great, and just cuz Utley and Howard are LH..they seem to hit any pitcher just fine (not looking at Howard’s splits right now..)
Probably the only one is Ibanez…but doesn’t he hit LH well too?

would have been nice to counter CC and Andy with another right bat somewhere!
Lefties kill the Phils. But the team is still good enough for another run or two in years to come.

If the Phillies and Cardinals
could swap a few LH for RH batters….yea, probably work a lot better.
Kind of amazing how one sided each team is (tho Philly at least has a few Switch hitters at the top.

It’s dumb to worry about what they’re doing over there. We got really quiet around here after our elimination each of the last 4 years.
Stay here.
