Center Field
We've been thinking about Holiday and Bay.
Well Cleveland is rebuilding. What would you give for Grady Sizemore? I'm sure the trade would take quite a bit of talent but he's a great player. He's a class act. I was surprised how young he is (27).
By the way wasn't the trade when Cleveland got him one of the great trades of all time?
Should we tell Cash to get on the horn?

One of the worst all-time. If the Expos don’t trade Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips for half a season of Bartolo Colon there might still be a team in Montreal. Or the Nationals might have chance of competing in the NL East.

Omar Minaya baby! Then he turned around and traded Colon for El Duque and Jeff Liefer. One more reason to be glad you’re not a Met fan.

No freaking way.
Grady is young, awesome and cheap. They’re rebuilding around him. In the history of MLBR there had been absolutely no rumors involving him EVER. That’s how untouchable he is.

He also sucked pretty hard this past year
He hit .248. In fast he’s never hit .300. He stole 13 bases and got caught 8 times. He’s posted a decent OPS+ – career 124, last year 111 – but he’s not the best. And Cleveland isn’t giving him up. He did have a good 2008, but his BA has declined for the past three seasons straight. He was even benched for a bit this year because he was slumping so hard. Let’s stick with Melky/GGBG.

He was hurt , he played about half a season.
And has OPS+’ed 123 or 133 for 4 years before that. He’s an established superstar.

YEA!
How about Matt Kemp instead? Or maybe Colby Rasmus? Who else is one of the best young CF in the game? WHO!???
Get th FK outta here. Sizemore is one of the top 3 CF in the game. He was injured last year anyway. He’s got a low salary too.
I’d love to have Grady patrolling death valley for the Yanks….but its going like a 0.1% chance of happening, and that might be too high.

I’ve covetted Matt Kemp since he was in AAA.

Cleveland will give him up sooner for later.
Just like all their other stars…..
I just think Cleveland doesn’t care to win.
Yankees all day.

Be great to have him
but would probably cost too much. I wouldn’t want to give that much of the farm away to begin with, but if it has to happen, I would want it to be for a pitcher. Please do NOT give away the farm system for Granderson/Seizmore/ect.. I doubt the Indians would trade him anyway. They’ve traded everyone else, and they’re probably building their team around him.
Please, Cashman, save the farm. But if you absolutely HAVE to spend it, use it to get Halladay.

Quieter member here...
But felt I should chime in. I’ve always liked Grady Sizemore. He just seems like a Yankee to me. In a similar way Tex did prior to his signing, I think he carries himself with the demeanor of a Yankee. Can I define said demeanor… no, sorry. But I know it when I see it, and Grady has it.
His numbers last year were not great, but as stated above, he was hurt for a fair portion of the year, so maybe they’re a touch deceiving. Hard to say really, but I think Sizemore would flourish in the Big Apple.
That said, I haven’t lost all hope for Brett Gardner, but I will admit my confidence is waining. And I also think Melky looked pretty good as a corner outfielder, and would like to see him get (another) shot as a regular starter (by that I mean almost every day).

why would your confidence wane in Gardner?
His improvements last year were vast, he had very similar numbers to Ellsbury, who according to ESPN is the greatest CF of all time.

Gardner >> Mantle.

It’s not really fair to compare anyone to Ellsbury, though. He’s just so scrappy, gritty, and plays with so much heart.

Clearly in his own class.
And Youkilis is the Greek God of Sport.
And lets not even mention Pedrioa’s grit. He’s as if sandpaper played 2nd base he’s so gritty. So scrappy he can make Thanksgiving dinner out of garbage can contents. Might even be able to turn shit to prime rib!
Might as well name the MVP award the “Pedroia”.

His inconsistency at the plate...
It seemed in Spring Training he was driving through the ball much more then he was when he came back from injury. The man can flat out fly on the bases, and his defense isn’t bad, at least to me. I was a huge fan when he first came up. He reminds me of me when I played (except he’s odviously way better, haha). I was a speed guy, slap type hitter, who had enough pop in the bat to get by. It’s just hard for guys like that to stay consistent in the majors I guess, except for Ichiro of course. That’s how I see Brett. Honestly, if he can do it, I’d love to see him in pinstripes for quite a while.
He is absolutely great when he’s on base. He just needs to work on getting on base more consistently. I won’t lie, I’m not a number cruncher. If there is some stats that back up the improvement you saw, care to shoot me a link?

go to fangraphs.com. Search for Brett Gardner, and hit the compare tab, then on one of the slots type in Ellsbury. It compares their AVG, OBP, SLG, BB%, K%, BB/K, ISO, BABIP, and wOBA.
What you’ll see is that in 2008, Ellsbury was much better than Gardner. Both players made improvements in 2009, but Gardner improved much more, to the point where he is just slightly below Ellsbury in every category. In fact, the biggest difference between them was their AVG, Gardner’s .270 against Ellsbury’s .301, but their wOBA was only different by .017, meaning Gardner was getting more extra base hits.

Who wouldn't be up for Grady??
The question is— who would give up.
I am guess it would take AJax, Montero, maybe Phil and/or Joba. Maybe a couple of lesser prospects too… too much?
In any case, I’m not so sure he can be had. As someone said above, they are more than likely trying to build around him.

that was just full of typos, i’m not even gonna try to correct
by NumberSeven on Nov 19, 2009 3:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is an insane amount for Grady Sizemore
If you are going to pay that much (which it probably wouldn’t take for Sizemore) go for Crawford or Halliday, which respectively play LF and P two positions which we could actually use, not center where Melky, Gardner, and AJax are all waiting

IF... that's IF...
the Indians were willing to part with him- I think it might be that scale. He is a potential franchise player, who is still only 27. I really don’t think that’s too insane. I’m not saying pull the trigger, I am saying that’s what they’d want.
by NumberSeven on Nov 19, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it wouldn't take that much
AJAX himself is supposed to be a similar caliber player when he matures, we wouldn’t have to give up much more than him alone. Montero, definitely not. Montero is worth more in a trade than Sizemore, or Halladay, by himself right now.
by Wraithpk on Nov 19, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Grady is signed for 10 and 11
the option for 12 becomes a player option if he is traded. (per Cot’s)
So he is coming into the time frame where the question is can they win before he leaves.
I think a good pitch would get him. It would take high ceiling prospects, possibly noy ML ready. We havw A LOT OF THEM.

true..
but why not see if AJAX can be a Sizemore type?
I’d say AJAX is more of a B prospect, but Sizmore wasn’t really one of thos can’t miss types..he just got better and really worked at his game.

Austin Jackson...
Is the key. Why not try him out, platoon him with Gardner early on if need be.

he's not ready yet
needs to work on his plate discipline a bit more. He should be a September call-up, though, and probably will be in the majors in 2011.
by Wraithpk on Nov 20, 2009 11:23 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
in 2011
He’ll win rookie of the year so just give him time. Its better waiting than giving him up for a player with injury problems

either him...
or Montero if he breaks through in 2011 too.

Enough of this Bret Gardner talk..
Have you ever watched a 6 year old play Wii Baseball. Gardner’s swing looks just like it. He can’t steal first base. Yeah he can run, yeah he can cover some ground in the outfield. But he can’t hit to save his life. The only reason he is in this league is that he will score 100 for 100 times from first on a double. Stop comparing him to Ellsbury, Gardner couldn’t carry is jock..
