Around SBN: 2011 In Extreme Home Runs

Bengie come home...

So, I'm thinking do not bring back Damon or Matsui.  Save the $26 million, but pick up Bengie Molina for 2 years, $3 million each and make Posada the DH for 75% of the time.  Then add Ankiel ($2.5 million, 1yr + incentives) to play CF or LF.

Finally resign Pettitte and an incentive laden contract for either Bedard ($5 million + incentives) or Myers ($2 million + incentives)

Lineup of:  Jeter, Cano (fellow fans of this site convinced me this makes sense), Tex, ARod, Posada, Ankiel, Swisher, Molina, Melky

Rotation: CC, AJ, Pettitte, Bedard, Joba

Then in 2011: AJax moves into CF, Hughes in Rotation as Pettitte retires.

Start picking it apart...

How much better is Bengie than Jose?

Yankees all day.

Jose is better defensively

but not by much. Both are great at throwing out baserunners, but Jose is a little better at framing pitches, blocking, and that excellent pickoff throw to first.

Offensively though, it’s no contest. Bengie can hit. Molina can’t. Bengie would be a nice pickup, but I’m thinking that Posada still is going to catch at least one more year.

Not sure on Bengie...

I think he wants to start and even right now he’s not as good as Jorge overall. Behind the plate is one thing, but swinging the bat he’s basically a Jose Molina who has some pop. Not saying much there…I’d rather see how Cervelli develops.

Hellz no to Ankiel. He sucks. Decent defender, cannon arm…no better than Melky overall. I pass.

Bedard would be nice. Any of the other injury prone ‘projects’ on the heap would be nice.

If Damon AND Mats are gone, yea I think you gotta try Robbie as the #2 hole hitter.

Ankiel sucks

Posada caught 111 games this year no problem. Why does he need to Dh 75% of the time all of a sudden?
Bedard is a headcase and wants to pitch in obscurity away from the limelight.
Brett Meyers could barely hack it in the NL East and hasn’t been remotely good since 2005.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Bengie has an OBP under .300

Cervelli can do that at a fraction of the price

that too.

Overly Negative

The purpose of Molina is to slide Posada into the #5 without losing a significant amount of offense. Cervelli does not provide that or should I say it is highly speculative on what he can provide.

Yes, Ankiel had a tough 2009, but he was not getting regular time in a crowded OF. I think he is a good gamble. Worse case a power bat off the bench if he struggles.

Are you so sure Bedard is a headcase? Maybe he just did not enjoy Seattle. Baltimore is not exactly obscurity and he was one of the leagues best pitchers then. Myers can toss the ball. He was won a championship. Played on winning teams. I would take my chances with an incentive laden contract with either.

I like picking up these players because there is no player compensation required, it keeps the youth in tack so we can see how they perform in 2010 (maybe an increased level of confidence with the WS win).

Now, with that being said, if we are willing to depart with AJax, Joba/Hughes, Melky for Granderson that is a different story. I’m not willing to do that.

AJAX, Joba and Melky....

for Curtis Granderson?

WTF?

Granderson’s a good ballplayer but..just no to that.

yeah take a look at...

…his splits.

.183 / .245 / .239 against lefties.. YIKES!!

Plus...

if you say to not re-sign Damon and Matsui….Bengie Molina is in no way going to help that loss.

His OPS was worse than Brett Gardner’s. That’s bad.

Actually like the Benjie idea

Fielding Jose is much better. Benjie has hit pretty good the past 2 years in SF though, one of the biggest reasons it was hard to play Jose especially in the playoffs was because he can’t hit. Benjie can catch, and also hit much better than Jose.

Not too sure on Ankiel though, think his run is over and he might end up on the list of guys who we wasted money on (Unit, Kevin Brown, Carl Pavano, Kenny Lofton) I think we need Bay, Dye or Holliday, preferably Dye or Bay, I don’t think Holliday is an AL player.

Dye...

is 35 years old. No thanks, the idea here is to get good younger players. Also, it’s not that Holliday isn’t an AL player, he had a bit of a slump in the beginning of the year, and was hitting in a notorious pitcher’s park. Bring him to Yankee stadium and he’ll put up very good numbers. Either Holliday or Bay would be nice for left field, but Holliday is the better player.

Benjie.

In a word- No.

The last thing the Yanks are going to do is add another aging catcher to the roster. I don’t care how good a hitter he his- not gonna happen.

Ankiel is awful

even for a steroid user.

A Molina for a Molina? How betrayed do you think Molina will feel?

Yankees all day.
