Jeet and Tex bring home the gold...
From the Worldwide leader:
Derek Jeter has won his fourth Gold Glove at shortstop, joining New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira among the American League players honored for fielding excellence.
....
Jeter and Teixeira helped lead the Yankees past Philadelphia last week for the team's 27th World Series championship.
Nice to see Jeter rewarded for what was probably his best defensive season of his career. Let's hear what the nay-sayers have to nay-say about that!! Tex, to me, is a slam dunk. Seeing him play everyday this year raised my already high level of admiration for his defensive abilities.

I wish Cano had got some love at 2B!!!
Cano had a great season at Second, and should have been in the discussion for the Gold Glove.

Gold glove voting
The problem with gold glove voting is that the guys doing the voting rarely actually see the players play. Unfortunately for Cano, who played a gold glove 2nd base this year, he got a reputation his first couple years of being a bad fielder, so it’s going to take him a long time to get any gold glove love.

This is a post about Gold Gloves.
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Yeah, I thought Cano deserved a Gold Glove too.
Hopefully, he might get a Silver Slugger award though.
Yankees all day.

I know it's an unpopular call here
But the Keebler Elf up north is better defensively than Robbie Cano. He should probably be given consideration before Cano.

i disagree
range- Cano
DP turning- Cano
arm- Cano
fielding % and the stuff on fangraphs doesn’t tell you everything. In fact, they tell you almost nothing. the fangraphs says that Tex is a “below average” first baseman. Cano is better than the Midget in my mind.

What makes you so sure that Cano has better range?
No, those defensive metric stats are not definitive but they’re tough to argue against. I’ve also watched a bunch of Sox games on mlb.tv whenever the Yankees aren’t playing.
If you ask me again at this time next year who’s better at 2B, my answer could be different since I believe Cano has yet to reach his defensive potential.

+1 on the fangraph stuff
Still though I’m fascinated by their work.
I wish we could continue to just show up and play for no reason. No umpires, no scorers. Just show up and have fun.

Interesting post up in the last few days comparing players who have played the same position for the same team for the last couple of years.
It found a strong correlation from ’08 to ’09.
Suggests to me that the problem could be in the ballpark adjustments.

range I gotta disagree
I watch a whole lot of Red Sox games (unfortunately..) and I see Pedroia getting to a whole lot of grounders.
Not that Cano doesn’t have that sort of range…he just doesn’t know how to dive and lay out for em like Pedroia does, so one that the little twirp is better.
As for the DP and arm thing, Cano might be the best in teh game as far as turning the DP and arm he’s up there with the best as a 2B.
I agree on the fangraphs thing. I like what they do and I think you can get a lot from it….but the people who think of it as gospel need to be kicked in the balls.

Cano is a SS
with a SS arm that plays 2B because he has bad feet and instincts. Same reason he doesn’t steal bases even though he’s fast enough. He has improved his footwork and may even win some gold gloves someday but there will always be guys better than him defensively.

Jeter
I’ve been reading some criticism of Jeter’s Gold Glove, most of which has ridiculed his selection based on his range. However, did these critics even take into account that Jeter had the fewest errors (8) and the highest fielding percentage (.986) of all AL shortstops? How about the fact that he did this while playing in 150 games, second to only Orlando Cabrera? Yes, he was 5th in UZR, but his defense was excellent this year and I hope that he works on it even more this offseason because he is still a great shortstop.

A large piece of this argument is the idea that if you can't get to a ball, you won't make an error on it.
So even if you have a fantastic fielding percentage on balls you can get to, that’s tempered by an inability to get to enough balls.

Same basic argument extends to why Franklin Gutierrez should have gotten one of the OF awards.
His UZR was unreal, but he had 8 errors simply because he could get to far more balls than anybody else.

That Gutierrez didn't win a Gold Glove
exemplifies just how little this award means. Yes, yay for Tex and Jeter, but overall the Gold Glove award is just so arbitrary.

I tend to agree
When you see Pena replace Jeter midgame it becomes obvious (maybe to those of us that played infield) that Jete’s range is questionable. Not looking for that point, I just noticed it once.
Jeter knows it too……don’t kid yourself. He put in a fantastic effort last winter to fix this.
<in no way am I hammering Jete here…please don’t hate.">

Jeter had a good year with the glove but there are SS's with more range.
Several categories are considered when giving any award. One category that is always considered in every award is popularity. Jeter did at least OK in every category but was tops in popularity.
