If we give Selig the benefit of the doubt, his gesture, on the surface, opens the door to retired players who have been, or could be, implicated in baseball’s drug scourge. Teams or the league office should have no reservations about reaching out and reconnecting to fallen stars.
I'll have more energy to think about this in the offseason, but it reeks of double standard and Seligism.

How Long...
…can one be commissioner?
I think McGwire should at least be forced to make some sort of public statement, even though what he did wasn’t technically illegal at the time of his playing.
But whatever. What’s done is done and clearly no one is making any motions to change the atmosphere…

My understanding of commissioner
is that he would make judgments in the interest of baseball, which almost by definition would sometimes go against this or that owner, and eventually he would piss off enough owners that they would force him out… then the cycle would begin again with the next commissioner.
Selig WAS an owner, basically one of the old boy network… as such, his assumption of the commissioner position has always seemed like the owners’ infiltration of the office… they’re not owners bound TO the game of baseball, but now mainly ARE baseball. All decisions now seem focused not on the game’s integrity, but rather on generating more and more money, everything else be darned. Also interesting how during realignment Selig’s own Brewers conveniently found themselves moved out of a tough division and into a markedly easier division.
The whole point of the commissioner was to provide an independent authority who could look after the game’s integrity. That mission seems to have disappeared in the Selig era. I feel like Selig is a sham commissioner.
