World Series Game 4: The Bull Moose Party

New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies, Nov 1, 2009 8:20 PM EST

If there's anybody on the Yankees who is (as Teddy Roosevelt called himself) "strong as a bull moose," it's CC Sabathia.

He pitched brilliantly against the Angels on 3 days rest, and the Yankees turn to him again.  He has a chance to put the Yankees firmly in the driver's seat for the Series.

His opponent is former Oakland A Joe Blanton, who was sent to the Phils last season midseason in a classic salary dump to a big market team.

Jeter has hit him (.333/.385/.583- fearful symmetry), Tex has pounded him (.333/.357/.704), Jorge has crushed him (.400/.500/.600) and Arod has destroyed him (.571/.727/1.571).

With last night's offensive outburst, the Yankees finally started to look like the Yankees.  Here's to staying hot.

I feel like this is the most 'must win' game for the Yanks so far.  They're bringing back their ace against a guy no one is giving a chance.  But Joe Blanton is not a bad pitcher, and with a sure fight coming between Burnett and Lee, I don't want to let Philly back into the Series.  Step on their neck.

Let's go Yankees!

Cervelli?!?!?

He’s been dressed up for Halloween this whole post season as CC! And he’s pitching tonight!!

by Ragnar808 on Nov 1, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

I live near Philly

I was watching those idiotic Philly fans being interviewed…They honestly think they are going to score 10 runs against CC tonight

by BlackandGoldSSgt on Nov 1, 2009 7:21 PM EST reply actions

no way they could say it and mean it...

Had to be under the influence….scratch that…

Better had been under the influence…..

by NYYWinsRings26 on Nov 1, 2009 7:24 PM EST reply actions

Tonight IS a must win...

gotta beat Joe Blanton (ERA vs. the Yankees = 8.20) when you have your ace on the mound. Especially since it will probably be Lee/Gaudin tomorrow and Burnett/Pedro in Game 6 is a toss-up (no way you want to be down 3-2).

by PortlandYankee on Nov 1, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply actions

Well, I just saw that it's Burnett on 3 days rest.

Hate that move…who do you start in Game 6? Andy? Gaudin?

I don’t think our chances for Game 5 go up much with this choice, but our chances of winning Game 6 go way down.

by PortlandYankee on Nov 1, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

why?

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 1, 2009 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

Because...

Lee vs. Gaudin or Lee vs. Burnett on 3 days favors Lee.

Burnett on regular vs. Pedro is a pussh. Pedro vs. Gaudin or Pedro vs. Andy on 3 days favors Pedro.

So we haven’t done much to improve our chances of winning Game 5, but we’ve definitely hurt our chances of winning Game 6, and I don’t want it all riding on CC on 3 days (2nd straight time) in a Game 7.

by PortlandYankee on Nov 1, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

I'd go further.

Burnett vs. Pedro with both on full rest is advantage Yanks as is Pettitte vs Hamels on full rest (especially with CC in the pen).

by stusviews on Nov 1, 2009 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yankees improve their chances to win

cuz their lineup is the best in baseball.

I don’t care who’s starting.

AJ on 3, doesn’t matter if its against Lee.

Who the hell says they don’t score 2 off Lee and AJ repeats his game 2?

Bullshit idea that they should worry about game 6.

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 1, 2009 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Do the math

Lee has been the best starting pitcher in the post-season, including CC. There is no reason to expect he won’t continue that trend and that the Yanks can beat him under normal conditions right now.

It is a HUGE error to trust Andy Pettitte on short rest, considering 1) his age, 2) his recent history on short rest (none) and 3) he was borderline on regular rest on Game 3 against that lineup.

by PortlandYankee on Nov 1, 2009 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Nah.

it simply doesn’t matter.

At this point, everyone can go 3 days rest.

you don’t start Gaudin if you don’t have to.

The Yanks don’t have to.

They can beat Lee, maybe even if Gaudin starts…but why risk it?

Can’t let them back in the series. Gotta play each game as its own.

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 1, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

Aggressive

I’d like to see them get aggressive tonight..you saw what happened when they got in that Philly bullpen which sucks!!! Don’t let Blanton look like an ace by watching pitches.

by BlackandGoldSSgt on Nov 1, 2009 7:29 PM EST reply actions

+1

Let’s smack the hell out of em. I live in Philly, and can’t take their mouths anymore. We show no mercy in this dojo. Sweep the leg Johnny. And let me walk into work looking like I slept with a coat hanger in my mouth

by swanny4eva on Nov 1, 2009 7:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Does anyone think we'll see CC go deep tonight?

that would be hilarious. He’s got more of a chance to hit a home run than Molina does!

by nyyrocks29 on Nov 1, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply actions

yeah i think he will be on tonight

Especially considering aj and Andy have found the formula to pitching to the phillies. Pitch their lefties away not inside. And Cc can hit, I would love a homerun

by swanny4eva on Nov 1, 2009 7:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

CC’s a pretty good hitter… off the top of my head, he’s had 92 PA with a .261 avg, 3 HR and 14 RBI

Thank God for making us Yankees.

by noonoo on Nov 1, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. A loss tonight would change the whole complexion of the series. It would not just even things up but appear to put Philly back in the driver’s seat. Let’s crush them tonight and then try for the kill tomorrow with two more chances back home.

by Dougrhon on Nov 1, 2009 7:35 PM EST reply actions

With the time change and a late game start...

I’m getting sleepy. Fuck. I can smell the coffee that I’ve got brewing in the kitchen.

Let’s go, Yanks!

by Ooofa on Nov 1, 2009 7:41 PM EST reply actions

Brett friggin Favre is controlling baseball too much

if he just STAYED RETIRED!!!!!! Because of him and his “rivalry” with the Packers, two of his games against the Packers, one changes a WS time, the other changes the time of a one game playoff (which probably gave the Twins a disadvantage but I’m not complaining about that).

Not fair for an old football player to have an affect on another sport, especially during PLAYOFF TIME!!!!! This is ANOTHER reason to hate Bud Selig. He never fights for baseball.

by nyyrocks29 on Nov 1, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

that would be nice

my goal is to have him out of the game before his first at bat.

Another thing that would make me happy is CC hitting a home run off of Blanton, and then throwing a shutout. Phillies fans constantly bring up CCs 2008 failure against them. Well, this isn’t 2008 is it?

by nyyrocks29 on Nov 1, 2009 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

lets go yankees

by GTWYankee on Nov 1, 2009 7:54 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Optimistic but...

…gotta remember that Joe Blanton is not a walk in the park, despite what his ERA would tell you. We can’t get lazy, we have to give C.C. some early run support and hit smart all throughout.

I’m anticipating a much closer game than most fans are giving the Phils credit for. Just seems like it. Hopefully I’m wrong.

by Drew York Yanks on Nov 1, 2009 7:55 PM EST reply actions

I sorta feel the same way

On paper, we should kill this guy. But I would’ve said the same thing in Games 2 and 3. We did pretty well against Hamels, but Pedro kept us in check much more than I ever thought he would. I THINK we’ll beat up on Blanton, but it wouldn’t shock me if he at least does better than Hamels.

by long time listener on Nov 1, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Pedro, even at 38 or whatever

Is still one of the 10 greatest right-handers of all time on any given day…you underestimate him at your peril.

by long time listener on Nov 1, 2009 8:01 PM EST reply actions

This is really annoying...

I’m aggrevated at the Giants loss..

but can we can the idea of worrying about game 6 cuz Lee’s starting game 5? Really starting to piss me off.

Is the WS really so much in the bag that we’re not worried about game 5?

Why the hell would you start Gaudin and “throw in the towel” for that game? Not to say Gaudin doesn’t throw a gem, but why not throw AJ and give the Yanks a better chance?

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 1, 2009 8:02 PM EST reply actions

If you don't like it, ignore the posts

But don’t look at us like we’re crazy for thinking Andy Pettitte on 3 days rest is a disaster waiting to happen.

by PortlandYankee on Nov 1, 2009 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

I just don't like Yankee fans

being OK with losing a game or not putting the Yanks in the best position to win.

I think Gaudin could do good. But why risk THAT?

I just don’t like the cop out of thinking about Game 6 before game 5 is decided…

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 1, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

What gives us the best chance to win?

Game 5: Lee v. Gaudin is 90/10, but Lee v. Burnett on short is probably 70/30.

Game 6: Burnett v. Pedro is 50/50, but Pedro vs. Andy on short is probably 75/25.

So which scenario gives us a better chance to win one of those games, because that’s the goal, right?

by PortlandYankee on Nov 1, 2009 8:12 PM EST up reply actions

If you go by those ratios...

then yea, obviously the latter.

But I don’t agree with those ratios.

THe Yankees lineup can slug with the best of em. Also, one pitcher shutting them down for 9 innings in 2 straight games?

Do you feel that has a 90% chance of happening? I don’t care how good Lee’s been, he’s not doing that again.

First off, lets win game 4. Then, give the team the best chance to close it out on Monday.

I think Andy could give 6 solid innings on short rest.

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 1, 2009 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

and the thing is....

Andy on 3 days might be a problem….

but why does it have to go to him?

Why not win game 5 (after winning game 4…) and end this crap?

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night could’ve been Pettitte’s last start ever. No guarantee he gets another one in this series, and no guarantee he comes back next year.

You might be right

but I have a feeling he’s coming back.

They’re gonna need him. Wang will be a huge question mark next year.

by Ragnar808 on Nov 1, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

he'll probably be back

And I sure hope he does come back. But there’s always the chance that the Yankees win and he decides to go out on top. Something to worry about much later, though.

The crack you send your umpires before the game must be too strong. Your umpires can not see or judge well enough to conduct a baseball game.

...I'm saying...

the only reason Utley had those 3 long hits was cuz the pitch was right down the middle.

Ryan Howard would even hit that, and he can’t even hit air right now.
