How do we straighten out the setup guys?

Having Andy taking the mound tomorrow in Philly gives me confidence that we can re-take home field advantage. I think we're going to need it because Cliff Lee is IN THE ZONE right now. (The behind-the-back catch? Christ. How do you beat that?)

Still, a key issue is what do about the young gun relievers. Roberston may have been the victim (sigh) of poor calls, but what Hughes, Chamberlain and Bruney are going to do, game to game, is anybody's guess. Clearly, Girardi felt the same way last night, going with Mo for 6 outs. I just don't see how we can ride our starters, LOOGYs, Roberston and Mo to victory against the Phillies.

So let's assume Bruney's seen his last serious appearance. Does Girardi keep working through the kinks with Hughes? Is Chamberlain the next call in a 7th inning situation? Or is it Robertson? Does Girardi toy with Gaudin or Aceves in late innings?

Simple.

Starter go 7, hand off to MO.

I’m not gonna think they are in trouble, cuz after all Marte has been their best RP so far in the playoffs (not including MO of course…he’s a GOAT anyway…different position)

They’re gonna need someone to get outs tho. I’m not sure if Andy can go 7, he seems great for 6 but the 7th is where he seems to get in a bit of trouble (not saying he can’t do it tho…).

I mean, MO for 2 is great an all as well, but it would be nice if a RP can get a few outs.

I think Hughes can return to form. I think he’s pressing and trying to overthrow too much. Simply hitting spots and throwing strikes (easier said than done of course..) is what he needs to focus on, not throwing it by people. Mix in a few curse (yea..like McCarver said…dammit.)

Yeah,

I kind of think you’ve got to give Hughes a chance to sort it out. Go with the horse that got you there, I suppose. He’s been making me awfully nervous, though. Second choice would be Robertson. Chamberlain’s all f***ed up and is going to need a shrink in the off-season. Bruney turned out to be one bad roster decision.

But, man, what happened to Marte? I used to cringe when he walked into the game. He has been a bright spot.

How do we straighten them out?

Start by fixing the manager.

Other than Rivera, Yankees relief pitchers have averaged .58 innings per appearance this postseason.

Worked for the last guy…..oh wait.

I'm not saying that

but Girardi treats EVERY reliever like you treat a situational lefty, in to face one or two batters and that’s it.

There’s no reason Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, or even Phil Coke (who’s not exactly a slouch against righties) can’t pitch a full inning, and there’s no reason why you have to use all three of them in every game.

agree.

Yet while its worked….

maybe treating them like chess pieces gets to their head?

Either way, whether they know when they’re coming out or not…throw strikes.

playoff pitching

I think it’s funny how the Yankees got here with lots of very reliable pitchers and now that the playoffs have arrived, we have been reduced to 4 quality pitchers. Our 3 starters and Mo. No more trusty aceves coke or hughes. Our pen used to be a huge advantage and now it is unbelievably unreliable. We are asking our starters to go 7 innings each game and then turn the ball directly over to Mo? That’s unreasonable and won’t hold for the final 5 games. If we want to take 3/5 we need our pen and that means Joe needs to go to our relievers again and trust our guys. If we lose, we lose. But we have no choice and we cant look to more for 39 pitches again. For last night it was ok because we NEEDED a win and had a day off but for the next bunch of games we need to turn the ball over to hughes and Joba and with confidence. If they struggle we’ll lose, but we must trust them because we won 103 regular season games that way

Joba hasn't been horrible

he struggled in Anaheim, but he did well back in NY for game 6. I think he’s an emotional pitcher, and I think he likes the crowd behind him. I think thats why he’s done better at home.

I kinda had this feeling.

going into this series I thought the weakness was going to be the pen aside from Mo. I wasn’t as worried about it in the Twins series, but began to notice it more with the Angels series. Hughes has been a completely different pitcher since the regular season. I can’t quite put my finger on it, I don’t know if its just nerves or what. Joba can be great one day and terrible the next as we all know. Marte hasn’t done too bad, especially considering what we have seen from him.

I'm perfectly fine with 6 out saves the rest of the way from Mo

Think about it. If he’s going six outs every game, we’ve got a lead in the 8th and he’ll likely only have to do it 3 more times, not the 5 games suggested up there ^. I’m sure he’s up for it for this series.

What would be real nice though, is if we can get a big 8-10 run type lead early tomorrow night, pull Andy after 6, and get some work in on Hughes and Chamberlain with a little less pressure. Odds aren’t that great of that happening, but it would help a lot imo….

I told you we would beat Georgia!! Now, as for those 9 wins in '09......
I got bored and made a blog!! SCS

The bullpen is realllllly bothering me this series

Why are they waiting until NOW to eff up? Lets get it together boys. Mo=6 out saves all series is asking for trouble isn’t it?

3 more wins to go......Dethroning a paper champion is all I care about. Yea,I said it. You're Welcome.
