Who do you want for the ALDS?

It looks like the AL Central race is coming down to the final day, and could go to a 1 game playoff.  In terms of a match-up for the Yankees, both teams have their pros and cons.  The Tigers have 3 starting pitchers who match up pretty well with our top 3 starters, although Verlander will have to pitch tomorrow, meaning he won't be ready until game 3 most likely.  The starting pitching of the Twins doesn't really match up well with us, but I would say they have an overall better lineup and bullpen.  So, who do you hope we get in the ALDS?

Doesn't matter to me

we should be able to beat either. We’re that good. If I had to pick one it would be the Twins, but Im really not getting my hopes up for either team. Remember how happy we were that we got Cleveland in 2007? Detroit in 2006? How did those turn out?

I’m watching the games, but only because I love watching good, competitive pennant races. It’s fun. But it doesn’t matter to me who the Yankees play all that much. We should be able to beat either of them. If we can’t, well then, we don’t deserve to be in the World Series.

Duh, the Tigers!

While the Yanks can beat either team, I’d rather face a Detroit team that hasn’t been able to win then a Twins team that’s been on a roll lately.

I'll take either

But it’s a good point about the starting rotations.

At this point, based on who is rested, it would probably be Edwin Jackson for Game 1, Verlander for Game 2, and Porcello for Game 3.

For the Twins, it would probably be Scott Baker for Game 1, Nick Blackburn for Game 2, and (gulp) Carl Pavano for Game 3. They may flip-flop Baker and Blackburn, as I don’t know who they consider their “ace” – Baker has a much higher strikeout rate, so I’d go with him.

I'm just thrilled that there is tie atop the AL Central ...

this Sunday. Even better would be a playoff Tuesday night.

twins are lookin scary good right now

id rather face the tigers at this point

by Onishadow14 on Oct 4, 2009 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

that doesn't matter....

they’re playing inspired ball to try and get into the playoffs.

Momentum in baseball is basically non-existant, at least to me. I remember the Yankees looking as bad as they possibly could one Sunday afternoon against the Blue Jays, then proceeded to sweep this Rays team that is beating them up right now.

What the f$%k is the internet?

momentum in baseball...

only gets you so far. My thinking is that it can give you an edge if you are close in talent to another team, but against a far superior team it’s not going to help you. For example, see the 2007 Rockies. Another thing that a lot of baseball commentators say is that momentum can easily be crushed by good starting pitching. So either team that ends up winning will have a struggle against the Yankees if CC is on his game.

Tigers

I’d rather see the Tigers. They had to throw Verlander today and Edwin on Tuesday, that means they’ll only see 1 start each in the first round. I don’t see them being a team capable of beating us behind their offense, plus they are playing bad baseball lately. Either way they have to play on Tuesday both teams, and we crushed each of them in the reg season

by dyanks10 on Oct 4, 2009 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

actually

both will get two. Porcello’s pitching on Tuesday, and Verlander today means he’ll be elidgable for game two. If the Tigers win, it will be Edwin game one, Verlander game two, Porcello game 3, Edwin game 4, Verlander game 5

Still not sure thats something I want to face, but again, like A-Rod said today, be careful what you wish for.

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 4, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually (part two)

By having them burn Verlander for the must-win game on Sunday and Porcello for Tuesday’s play-in game, the Yankees benefit. Porcello only gets one turn in a five game series and Verlander pitches games 2 and 5. Why is that big? Because if this series ends in 3 or 4, we only face Verlander once in the series. And with CC going twice in that span, there’s a good chance that will happen.

Then again, if we face the Twins, we get to take a crack at Carl Pavano.

Good times.

Anyone have any luck getting playoff tickets at 10AM today? Struck out.

i was able

to get one. not two tickets. which is fine because I’m single and didn’t have that much money

I WANT PAVANO

He was paid 40 million dollars by the Yankees for four seasons. Over those four seasons his win total is 1 short of Aceves’ win total this year, and Aceves is a middle reliever. I want the Twins and then I want the Sox.

Probably better to play the Twins

Despite them being hot the Yankees play incredibly well in their building and they don’t have shut-down starters like the Tigers do. Regular season hot streaks don’t necessarily carry over into the playoffs as we saw with the Yankees in 05, 06 and 07. That being said the Yankees have no excuse for losing to either of these teams so really it shouldn’t matter who wins.

The TIgers have one shut down starter – Justin Verlander – and so do the Yankees – CC Sabathia.

Edwin Jackson + Rick Porcello < Andy Pettitte + AJ Burnett. And I’m not that biased.

The other thing to note is that

while Minnesota is a better offensive team than the Tigers (by a fair bit), they are a lefty-heavy lineup. Normally they have Morneau-Mauer as the Lefty heart of the lineup, and Kubel is a lefty too. Morneau is out, but still Cuddyer is the only righty in the lineup with pop. CC destroys lefties. On the other hand, Granderson is the only LHB of note for the Tigers, and he has not been so good anyway this year. As bad as he has been this year, Ordonez has a 937 OPS against LHP, and Cabrerra kills LHP. Overall, the Tigers actually have a better team OPS against LHP than the Twins do, even though the Twins are a significantly better offensive team. My guess is that regardless of who he is faced up against, CC is an automatic win against the Twins, and this also makes a big difference.

Which would you rather face?

The team that made up a 6.5 game deficit in 18 days without one of their best players

or

The team that gave up a 6.5 games lead in 18 days?

by detroit yankee on Oct 5, 2009 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

Honestly

The Twins and Tigers are both mediocre teams. Both have gaping holes on offense and in the pitching staff. In fact, without the unbalanced schedule, we’d probably be talking about a sub-.500 playoff team.

On any given day, the Twins are going to start at least three players who are sub-replacement level hitters this season (and in some cases, for their careers). Their entire offense has been worth 154.6 VORP this season, with Joe Mauer accounting for 89.4 of that.

The Tigers are, frankly, even worse. Their hitters have accounted for a staggeringly bad 61.4 VORP this season. To put that in perspective, if you take Miguel Cabrera out of the equation, the rest of the Tigers offense is about what you’d expect from a lineup of AAA players.

true

the central really has sucked these last 2 years. Was stronger by a lot 2005-2007.

by Buzzy on Oct 5, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

doesn't matter who did what in that division...

I know this also doesn’t matter…but the Yanks have owned both teams this year so far.

I know in the past that hasn’t indicated anything, but this is a different Yank team.

It simply doesn’t matter who they face between the 2. I’m comfortable with either matchup.

What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 5, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably the Twins

Only because we historically own them in the playoffs and in recent memory.. However I would love to run the table against the Tigers/Sux / Dodgers ..to give some payback .
