Yanks take Game 2, take Pedro deep in 3-1 victory

Ahh, much better.

The Yankees beat the Phillies in a much-needed, if technically not "must-win" Game 2, with A.J. Burnett outdueling old friend Pedro Martinez.

The Phillies took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd with an RBI single from Matt Stairs, but the Yanks answered in the 4th with a solo shot from Mark Teixeira. Two innings later, Hideki Matsui went yard to give the Yanks a 2-1 lead, and then they collectively abandoned the longball game in favor of the small ball one.

If we had lost that game, I would have undoubtedly been arrested, and they would have needed dental records to identify the first base ump's mangled body.

Star-divide

Something tells me this game is just a microcosm of how the rest of the series is going to go. Nip and tuck. Working the pitchers. No easy outs, no easy runs. I don't know if my heart can take it.

Admittedly, no one can say we teed off on the long-winded stepchild of the Yankees. He kept our bats frozen through 3 innings, save a single from Hideki. And I wouldn't dare publicly subscribe to this at the time, but the thought did cross my mind that if Pedro holds us scoreless and to one hit, I may have to walk into a pit of wild boars to take me out of my misery.

Fortunately, Tex saved me from this fate when he led off the bottom of the 4th with shot to right center. 'Bout time. I was like 8 minutes away from exploding into a "the Phillies have weighted the ball!" outburst. (Seriously, though. It felt like the whole bar had been possessed by Sterling, every shot looked like it was going to carry, inducing us all to jump to our feet in excitement only to see it caught no where near the warning track.)

With the score tied 1-1, everyone was breathing slightly easier. Slightly. A.J. continued to deal, and unlike his usual Good A.J. persona, he wasn't even throwing the occasional wildness. Over 7 unbelievably solid innings, he used 108 pitches to let up just 4 hits, walk 2, and strike out 9. NINE. Thank you a thousand times over, A.J.

The offense did little to help him out, though it never seemed as through Pedro was baffling them, per se. If anything, they might have been a little overeager to knock him around and hence were getting whiffed on giant cuts.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Yanks added another run to their lead, and it really should have been a couple more runs, but a horrendous call ended the inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Jorge Posada singled to score Brett Gardner (although his ribbie was regrettably not off Pedro, but I'll take it.)

Jeter made the first out of the inning when he did what every hot batter does with 2 strikes, runners on, in a playoff game where you only lead by 2: bunted. Naturally. Johnny Damon came up and hit a line drive to first which Ryan Howard sells as a catch despite its definite hop, umps buy it, Posada out at 2nd, Damon out with the catch.

Technically, it should have been a 4-1 game, with runners on 1st and 2nd and still 1 out, since Howard never even stepped on first. Eh, it's moot.

Mariano Rivera comes in for 6 outs and throws wayyy too many pitches en route to his 38th postseason save (39). Things started to get a little too close for comfort when he put on Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins, with Chase Utley to deal with on only 1 out. Superman induces a double play, inning over.

The 9th went on without much of a hitch beyond Raul Ibanez's double. Mo struck out Matt Stairs to end the game. (Btw, I never noticed how much of a fat middle-aged Guiness-drinking, Mets-rooting blob Stairs looks like--that's the type of guy who bats cleanup in his bar softball league, not for a pro one.)

The series is tied at 1 game apiece, with a "travel" day tomorrow, then 3 games in Philly commence on Halloween. Great win tonight, Yanks. And special nod of gratitude for Jose Molina (yup, first time that sentiment has ever been uttered ever), for picking off Jason Werth in the 3rd. Maybe that was the weird kick in the pants the boys needed to start it up.

It's still our series. Here's to taking Philly by the jugular this weekend.

And what better time for bloodshed then October 31?

I wonder if “Moose” is regretting…

… not coming back this season now?

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.
It was making my brick wall jealous...

If he would have pitched anything like 2008,

we could have used him… and would have one heck of a pitching staff right now.

Man, that would have been great!

by pinstriper on Oct 29, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

His stats are virtually identical to Jim Palmer.

And Palmer is in the HOF of course…

Moose also has a terrific winning percentage, better than many (most?) of the pitchers already in the HOF.

This was a good one

Mariano wasn’t making it easy though, I have to admit. But, we won and that’s all I care about. 3 more!

It’s amazing he was able to stay effective for that many pitches!

Burnett was fantastic. the offense was just good enough. i’ll enjoy it tonight and talk about the negatives tomorrow.

I'm Ready for It

We can’t turn a blind eye to it after this post-season, it’s evident that it needs to be in play. I’m still pissed about that “double play”.

they need to at least discuss it because this postseason has been a debacle. they dont even need to implement it in the regular season. just the postseason

I like...

The Twins manager Ron Gardenhire’s quote, asking for a flag. Give them two challenges for the game, just like football, and one more if it goes into extras. If they are successful in the challenges, good for them, but give them no more (unlike football, you get 2 right, you get another flag) and put a 90 sec timer on it, so the umps have a set time and people don’t whine about making games longer. Only allow challenges on things like tags, timing of the ball and runner (like today’s double play that went for the yanks), catching or not (like today’s bogus double play that went against the yanks), and fair/foul… and obviously home runs, but we already have that.

I think that will make it so the calls are right, the managers have more of a role in the game, and it still keeps the human element in the strike zone. Replay on strikes should never happen.

Burnett

surprised the hell out of me tonight, he never really got wild and pitched a great game. i don’t like seeing MO come in for those 6 out saves, but as shakey as our bullpen has been lately it was necessary.

after that 1B ump missed the call on that “double play” i felt like reaching through my tv and ringing his neck. we’re gonna need out bats to wake up though for this series. they were good enough tonight but that won’t always cut it. A-Rod needs to start getting hits (0-8, 6Ks so far), and the bottom portion of the order needs to come through as well. Phillie is too good to keep having poor hitting days.

Molina?

I have to say that after tonight, I am feeling more and more comfortable with Molina. AJ looked great, not to mention really sharp. His 1st pitch strikes were definently a big factor and I think a huge part of that was the comfort of having Molina behind the plate. Nothing against Posada but if AJ looks this good, than Molina should stay behind the plate.

Best of both worlds

Molina was huge defensively, and Posada had a big hit late. Hariston was good (1-3, got on base in a big situation).

Girardi had good moves tonight. So far a good series for him.

This has been two really good, really well-pitched games except for 2 innings at the end of Game 1.

Still hope some Yankee bats (Damon, A-Rod, Swisher) wake up for Hamels, the one Philly pitcher of the Top 3 who IS hittable.

FOX

I suggest Yankee fans all over the US (the planet?) send letters, emails, faxes and phone calls to Bud Selig demanding an end to FOX TV’s domination of baseball playoffs and the World Series. If I had a dollar for every time those ignorant oafs Joe Buck and McGarver burbled about Pedro’s wonderfulness I’d be a millionaire tonight. Pedro was “brilliant” …and Burnett was “good.” The Phillies are “a great and talented team”…and “the Yankees are dangerous.” Who said these twerps are sportscasters? They’re the anti-Yankee verbal hit squad.

I feel FOX does a pretty job

but Buck and McCarver HAS TO GO! And re-tool the Fox Trax. It does nothing for me. Pay ESPN to license K-Zone or something. World hunger would indeed end if Fox had to paid a nickel for every time McCarver exhaustively rambles on about pitch velocity at release point and upon crossing homeplate.

Fan Blinders?

Having the MLB package I watch plenty of out of market games and yes there are some broadcast teams(White Sox) that dont call it down the middle, but the Fox and ESPN teams dont hide their dislike of the team that puts the money in their pockets. What happened to the old days when guys like Cosell, Costas, Michaels and countless others called games without all the useless garbage. They have a useless stat for everything.

by YankeesJets on Oct 30, 2009 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll take the story about AJ's masterpiece instead of the gardening story, or cliff diving,

or seeing Zimmer flung, etc. . In short I’ll take what is happening on the field, as it happens, the rest is stuff of pre game articles and as far as having something to talk about “..for four hours” , they do,… THE GAME.

by YankeesJets on Oct 30, 2009 2:40 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed, I dont need a nonstop patter of everything research can continue to

send to the booth, particularly when it almost ‘talks over’ the action as they try to finish whatever rabbit trail of a story they’re telling when something suddenly happens. If they want to make the game more interesting they could just get out of the way by dropping the countless personal stories ‘during play’ and PLEASE stop those lingering closeups of faces, especially during critical moments (not to mention when it’s a player NOT on the field). I wanted to see the pitch Molina was calling on a critical 3 and 2 count, not a long long super close up of Pedro switching to AJ just as he pitches. That is just one many examples of them trying to manufacture some drama when no added ingredients were needed. In fact it was the too many cooks in the kitchen episode.

by aliasalias on Oct 30, 2009 3:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Two things...

1) Howard did not “sell” the catch. If he indeed did catch the line drive, then he would have raised his glove in the air to show the umpire that it was a catch. At which point all he had to do was casually walk to 1st base and step on the bag since Posada was already at second and obviously did not tag up.

The fact that Howard immediately threw to second after realizing he couldn’t beat the batter to 1st shows he realizes he didn’t catch the ball on the fly.

2) Since the umps ruled that he did catch the ball on the fly, all Rollins had to do was step on the bag at 2nd since their were runners on 1st & 2nd before the play. It was Melky who was actually the second out on that play. Unless the umps called the out on the tag by Rollins. Even though Posada was on the bag at 2nd, he had no right to be there since he didn’t tag up. If there were no outs at the time it would have been a triple play.

Regarding your point #1

I wondered at the time: Howard started toward first, then stopped and fired to second to start the double play. How does this action by the guy with the best view of the play (and a good defensive reputation) not clue in the first base ump that maybe he was wrong? He (the ump) was blocked from the play, and basically guessed that the ball had been in the air. This, despite the evidence of Howard’s response that the ball had not been caught on the fly.

Interestingly, not one word from the umps that I’ve seen or heard about the two blown double play calls in the late innings last night.

by waw on Oct 30, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Two other things...

1. We’ve seen four great performances by the starting pitchning so far. This is after all the talk about how good the hitting was.

2. Scarey stat o’ the day: Phillies are 0-4 in game two of post season series since last year’s world series. They are 12-0 in all other games. We really need to win game 3.

by coops2001 on Oct 30, 2009 6:40 AM EDT reply actions

AJ was filthy. That’s the AJ I remember from Toronto. That 2-seamer has been absent since May and June. Where it went? I don’t know, maybe he just didn’t have a feel for it.

Not much else really. Nice to see life from Tex and Mats. JHJ didn’t do much..I still don’t know what to do there (put in Swisher again…go from there).

Umps said they got it right

Page 74 of today’s NY Daily News. Column by Roger Rubin, stated the umps reviewed the Howard DP and the umps claimed they got the call right. I clearly saw him short hop the bal,l, on the replay that, with the bad throw to 2nd, should have been bases loaded and one out.
I honestly think the Utley DP was payback for the blown call against the Yankees.

by fredny on Oct 30, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

On a play like that...

you’d think that since the Ump OBVIOUSLY didn’t see the ball being caught, that he’d at the very least go by Howard’s reaction.

Howard’s not gonna throw the ball to 2nd if he catches the ball. Any 1B who wants to make believe they caught it would show the ump their glove as if to say “I caught it” and go and step on first.

The catch or short hop wasn’t all that clear. But Howard’s reaction was clear as day. Why the hell would a 1B throw to second if he wasn’t thinking about a force out DP?

I mean thanx the baseball gods there was the ability for a make up call on the Utley DP (he was safe). But still, I’d rather take the couple minutes to get the plays right
