World Series Game 1: Is this really happening? The Quest for #27 really begins...

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees, Oct 28, 2009 7:57 PM EDT

It all starts here...

by David J. Phillip - AP

It all starts here...

It's almost surreal. I can't believe that in mere hours I'll be watching the New York Yankees in the World Series. I'm strangely calm, which means that it's all going to catch up to me about 2 minutes before the National Anthem is sung. Fortunately, I'm prepared.

Tonight, our favorite round boy and ALCS MVP CC Sabathia (3-0, 1.19) goes up against superace and ex-teammate Cliff Lee (2-0, 0.74) for a match that walked straight out of Type Casting for Mega-Pitching-Duel. The AP so insightfully informs us that the two hurlers have more in common than we may think:

"Teammates only 16 months ago, Lee and Sabathia have more in common than their Cleveland history and potent left arms. Their families are friendly, and they still text each other often."

Wow, they're practically clones.

CC hasn't had the most success against the Phils (1-2, 5.55), but then again, it seems like the baseball world has been scoffing left, right, and center at history this year. Lee isn't striking fear into the hearts of most NY fans either, though. In 12 IP, he's let up 16 hits, with Yankee hitters boasting a .320 BA against him.

Lee's the type of pitcher the Yanks can work from both ends--his control is subject to variability, and he has too much faith in his completely hittable fastball. If they jump on those 2 weaknesses, the Phillies aren't gonna know what hit 'em.

This year, the Yankees are 1-2 against their "Liberty Series" counterpart, but I think we can agree that the Late May Yanks are a far cry from this Late October one. Much has been made of the Big Bad Bats decorating the Philly line-up, but technically Ryan Howard and Chase Utley don't bat 9 times in a row.

And, most importantly, this is the Bronx.

And I think Reds' manager Dusty Baker sums it up pretty well here:

I’ve lost in Yankee Stadium as a Dodger and won in Yankee Stadium as a Dodger. It can be done, but you don’t want to be in a position where you have to win there. They just believe they are always going to win, the players believe it, the fans believe it.

They brain wash you. They put all those great moments in Yankees history on the scoreboard during batting practice. The highlights are great and the Yankees are just killing teams and you have to watch it for two hours. You can’t help but see it. It's just not conducive for visitors.

They wanted to take that vibe and that history from the old stadium and bring it to the new Yankee Stadium and with the success they are having it appears to have worked. I remember when Aaron Boone hit that home run off Wakefield to get the Yankees to the World Series in 2003, Derek Jeter had told him not to worry that the ghost will come.

So the Ghost of Babe Ruth may be a curse to some but he’s been good for the Yankees.

Scared yet, Philly?

I had a good LOL

watching PTI a little while ago. They forced an interview with McCarver and Buck where they were standing out in the rain, nice and windy and cold too.

Lets go YANKS!

30 minutes till pre-game… 90 or so till game time. Boom.

Did you see the piece where Buck said “I’m sorry” when he was told that to a generation of sports fans he is the voice of the World Series?

I’ll try to find a link.

I like how he acted like

PTI was a show small enough that he wouldn’t stand out in the rain for it…yet was.

I kinda think he was joking…but it was even funnier that Kornheiser and Wilbon were not laughing at all.

I don’t hate Joe Buck. I don’t think he’s any worse than the average person in baseball- he has to try not to root against the Yankees, but at least he’s trying.
I think they should do a booth with one Yankee broadcaster and one Philly broadcaster.

I like that idea..

I think the Buck hate is more cuz he simply goes along with whatever McCarver…and Troy Aikman say….and those 2 are idiots.

I guess it doesn’t bug me as much because I don’t watch a lot of football, so I’m spared the double exposure.

You know what?

SkySports has this thing called FanZone for the English Premier League, where a fan from each team covers the game. Every game, I wonder if the people on this forum couldn’t do a better job than McCarver. They’d be more interested, probably less biased (:p) and definitely funnier. He pissed me off in Game 1, covering the game as if the Twins were playing . . some random team. It’s just gotten worse from there, I guess.

That Aaron Boone homer

Was one of my happiest Yankees memories till then. It made me sort of believe 2001 was a bad dream, and that this team could do ANYTHING. Of course, what came after that has made me appreciate how spoilt we’d been by the Yankees.

Well, I wanna be spoilt again :D How many more seconds till game time again?

by pkyankeefan on Oct 28, 2009 6:51 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely.
I was in college, and for some reason my girlfriend at the time chose that day to become interested in baseball.
When Boone hit it, I jumped up off the bed and hit my head on the ceiling.

Sure you can.
It hasn’t been all roses for the Red Sox
4 (1-3) WS appearances to 2 (2-0)
1 ALCS loss to 2 ALCS losses
4 ADLS loss to 2 losses
1 missed playoff to 4

Sigh

And double sigh. That stupid series still makes me miserable. I have a nagging feeling I’ll never get over it if I live to be a hundred. Or if we win 5 WS in a row. Probably.

The worst bit is that I was (obviously) gloating and all geared up for the WS (2004). I was hoping it would make 2003 go away. Silly me. And I still contend that if the Cardinals had done their job, it wouldn’t have hurt half as much.

I had always said that the whole talk of a curse was stupid and that I’d root for the Red Sox if they ever got to a World Series.

My friends who are Red Sox fans and my friends who became Red Sox fans made it such a point to piss me off that’s it’s the only World Series in about the last 15 years I only watched one game.

I'm sorry to say

but nothing will EVER get rid of 2004. Even if we beat the Red Sox every single time we face them and win every World Series from here on out, they broke the curse in the most heartwrenching way. So many times we almost had them. And on top of that they were the first team in North American sports history to come back from 0-3.

Nothing will ever erase that. We’ll just have to lean on the fact that we are the best team in North American sports history.

by GMan83201 on Oct 28, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

If we win EVERY world series from here on out…..I’d have no problem telling Sox fans exactly where they can stick 2004.

In fact if we can just continue to be better than them from year to year then that’s good enough for me.

The only reason 2004 is special is because they had been SO pathetic for so long anyways.

This sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love Fig Newtons.

ESPN thinks the Phillies are unstoppable and for some reason this DH issue in NL ballparks is somehow a “surprise” weakness to the Yankees?
