The Yankees Can't Win In The Media
I'm sorry folks, I've had it with the media's never-ending slant against the Yankees and felt the need to vent. In the media's eyes, it's as if the Yankees can never win. If they lose in the playoffs (or [gasp] COMPLETELY MISS the playoffs) they are a bumbling bunch of underachievers with idiot owners and idiot management; but God forbid they win, the story isn't that they won, but rather how much money they spent to win. !@#$%^&**()!!
If a team with a low payroll wins they're scrappy, talented, and/or a team of destiny. If a team (but not the Yankees) with a big payroll wins, they're heroic, a juggernaut and/or a dynasty. If the Yankees win it's because they bought the win.
If a team pisses away all their players the year after winning, they didn't do it because their owners are greedy or their management are morons; no, they had to do it to attempt to compete with the Yankees.
If a team's owner pockets as much money as he possibly can at his own team's expense, that's okay. If the Steinbrenners pour virtually all their operating income back into their (as well as everyone else's) team, they're big, bad, greedy owners.
If another team spends $140 million or so on the hottest free agent over the winter, it's deemed a wise and prudent investment. If the Yankees spend $140 million on a free agent, they're bullying the rest of the league.
If another team develops their farm system and brings up several players to form the nucleus of their club for a decade or more, they're geniuses. If the Yankees do the same, they're throwing their money around and buying a championship. Figure that one out!
Today, Jeff Passan has a column on the MLB home page of Yahoo! Sports about the ALCS. Is it titled something like, "Yankees Win AL Pennant?"
Or "Yankees Finally Back?"
Or "Yankees Exorcise Demons of 2004?"
Or even "Yanks Win Sloppy Series?" (A tirade against poor officiating that marred the ALCS)?
NOOOOO!!! It's...
Thanks A Billion: It took five years and more than $1B for the Yankees to reclaim the AL pennant and quiet the ghosts of ALCS past
Why... why... WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Why can't anyone in the media seemingly just treat a good Yankees team as exactly that? Why do they always feel some pathological need to cheapen the victory when the victor happens to be the Yankees!?!
I'm sorry, but this just isn't right. (sigh.)

Yup...
doesn’t matter.
Win, they bought it. Lose, they’re a joke. I say..who cares. “But we won the WS”, is a good way to say “shut up”
And you know what? I don’t give a rats ass. They my team, and let the media (which love the Red Sox anyway…) bitch about it.
..."I predict...the Giants are #1"...
...."That's not a prediction meatman, that's a FACT OF LIFE"!.

Yeah, its part of the territory.
I will admit, most media is pulling for Philly.
I hope we put Rocky to rest though. Thats a tired theme.

Yes, embrace it, my son.
I have an uncle with a bum ticker. He’s had a heart problem since about 1997. It’s no mystery as to why he has it — years of smoking, partying, and eating carelessly brought it about, clearly. Yet, since the only rule HE follows is that one which allows him to get the most for the least amount of work, he refuses to accept much of the blame. He calls it luck of the draw, fate, whatever. He has the same outlook towards his responsibility now to get in shape and eat right.
BOTTOM LINE — Ain’t it always the case that the losers are always blaming someone else for why they lose or why they might lose in the future? The more you hammer away at a seemingly obvious point (Yankees — money — buy victories) the more it becomes a part of the psyche of the masses. The masses, at this point, are convinced that the Yankees’ spending habits are to blame for their inability to win. Even these idiots waving glitter-covered thundersticks with a stuffed monkey hanging over their shoulder who know NOTHING about the game know how to utter the words “the Yankees buy their championships,” lol. It’s sad, man.
Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio said it best today at the start of his show: What happens when you put a salary cap in a major sport? Look at the NBA. The same teams are in the running for the big spots each year, not because of payroll, but because the cities with the most demand for the sport demand the best players, and the demand of the cities brings in media, marketing, etc. It is the interest of the area that matters, not necessarily the money.
Ask anyone on the Tampa Bay Rays, and they’d probably like to be Yankees. Despite winning the 2008 A.L. pennant, the Rays’ biggest problem this year was — you guessed it — ATTENDANCE. NO ONE CARES ABOUT BASEBALL IN TAMPA.
New York breathes, eats, drinks, and sleeps baseball. Same for Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago. The best players WANT to play for these teams because they know that going to them will earn them more attention, a greater fan-base, and a chance to play in more meaningful games.
So let them rant, dude. Personally, as a Yankee fan since the late eighties when the wasn’t worth subway fare, I’m proud to be linked to an owner that would donate a lung to win a championship. Maybe these Yankee-haters, deep down, want their owners to “buy” them some championships as well. But it’s so much easier to blame the Yanks.
Keep the hate coming, I say. It’s what gets me up in the morning. And to all you cry-babies from Halos Heaven, enjoy the offseason. No worries — go grab a bran muffin and a shot of wheat-grass; you’ll be fine.

let the haters, hate...they have a severe inferiority complex
Passan’s an idiot dead red sox fan…he picks them every year, and dogs the Yanks as much as possible…He had the Yanks finishing 3rd in the division behind Tampa (wildcard) and Boston (1st). In his last column I think he brought up ’04 atleast 2-3 times, like every other sox fan will do for the rest of their lives..Why? ’cause they have nothing else to cling to while trying to ignore the fact the Yanks have been the supreme franchise in all of sports spanning a century. It will be that much sweeter when the Yanks continue to add to their trophy case. 27 here we come! May the ghosts be with us, and thank God for making me a Yankee fan!

On 2004 --
Good point.
Also worth mentioning is the fact that when you’re as succsessful as the Yankees, it stands to reason that the records you break and set are not always good records. With regards to all that junk on being the only team ever to drop a 3-0 lead, clearly the Yanks have the highest probability of setting that mark given the fact that they’re in the playoffs more than any other team.
I pity the fools who bring up 2004 like it’s the second coming of Jesus.

Let them hate
who cares what the media thinks? They all love the Sux anyway. It’s obvious they hate the Yanks, and believe it or not, most of the media is pulling for the Phils here (although if it were the Yankees in there place, they would say that the Yankees are buying championships and are being unfair. But if it’s the Phillies winning back to back titles, they’d say it’s a “dynasty” and a great story).
I say just let the World Series play out. You know how it’s going to turn out. If the Yankees win, they bought the title. If they lose, they’re a big joke.
Good thing the media doesn’t run baseball. Good thing opposing fans don’t run baseball. Baseball is run the way it always has been. With no salary cap. The Yankees aren’t doing anything to break the rules. They are using the money they make (it’s not like they rob banks) to put a championship team on the field. If they win, regardless of what the media or other fans say, the title is in the record books, and this team will go down as one of the best Yankees teams ever. If they lose, well then, we take what they say about how the Yankees are a “joke” and we wait until next season and try again. Who cares what they think?
And they’re one step away from #27.
I have tickets to Game one. I CAN’T WAIT!!!! GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!

I'll Admit
It does bother me slightly, but I think it’s because I’ve been born into Yankee-dom and I see the world of the Yankees as a “beautiful place”. I can’t really understand how or why people hate this team.
All the articles that I’ve been reading within the past 24 hrs. mention payroll at least a billion times, I kid you not. If the Yankees really bought off MLB and the Umpires…why would it have taken them so long to get back to the World Series? That’s why I don’t take the hating that seriously.
NYY’s have got the best fans in the world (I know people outside of this country that recognize the Yankees’ greatness). That’s more than a lot of other teams can acknowledge.
Can you imagine what most of these teams would do if the Yankees decided for one season to sit it out? They’d all crumble and scramble. Without the Yankees, most people wouldn’t even buy tickets to games, let’s get real.
In any event, I’m just glad to be a fan of such an organization. So, whatever. :P

well...
thats america today, its that big buissness hater mentallity. its ok to be fat, ugly, second best. thats why america hates teams like the spending yankees, can it be that other teams are just to busy getting rich instead of putting talent on the field? its all about george putting a winner on the field to get fans to come , i applaud george and think he is a genious. today in america ( liberal writers) are to fast to pounce on the yankees for spending big. but i say if you open a company tommorrow whats the goal? to make money. period , or you dont stay in buissness. today we to easily promote mediocrity and i belive it goes the same for all those fools who say the yanks spend to much. you no what? makes me even prouder to be a yankee. and a loyal fan cause if not for them my life would have been boring. they brought me the 80s when i was young , then the 90s in my 20s now in 2009 they are back were they belong……

Because people are jealous of the yankees. When the yankees win they want to ddowngrade it and point at all the free agent signings that they went out and pulled to get to this point….personally as yankee fans we have learned to deal with this….bieng a fan of the most hated team in america but also the most loved….prettu funny. The steinbrenners are geniuses and other fans hate us because the owners of their clubs don’t do what the stienbrenners do for us. They put a championship caliber team out there every year but in the end you still have to play the games. We are finally in the World Series…..granted it took a little longer then I expected but hey when we beat the phillies we will finally be able to say we are the best again….so to all my yankee brethren I say this….we are on the verge of another great run. 2 out 3 maybe? With tex and arod jeet for a few more years, CC and AJ, joba and hughes and as long as Mo is shuttin down the 9th inning the yankees willl be just that….THE NEW YORK YANKEES…..LET’S GO BOYS THE ROAD TO 27 IS SHORT. LET’S GET 4 MORE WINS….THE CANYON OF HEROES AWAITS!!!!!

You couldn't be more right..
But that’s life as a Yankees fan…Let’s just win the World Series and listen to everyone say, “You bought a Championship.” And then we can say, “That’s OK, we’re still World Champs and you’re not.”
And then we can bask in the glory for the next year!
