ALCS Game 3: Into the Lion's Den
New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels, Oct 19, 2009 4:13 PM EDT
The Yankees have gone 8-20 in Anaheim over the last five years (including the 2005 LDS), and haven't won a season series there since 2004. However, they were able to win two out of three in Anaheim a month ago.
The bad news is that Andy Pettitte has pitched terribly against the Angels this season. In three starts (two in Anaheim), he allowed 14 earned runs in 16 innings (7.88 ERA), with 21 hits, eight walks and six strikeouts. The two games in SoCal saw him give up nine earned runs in 10 innings. In fact, Pettitte hasn't won a game against the Angels since August of 2007.
The good news is that Jered Weaver hasn't fared much better against the Bombers. His 2009 ERA is 5.59 (12 ER in 19.1 ip), and his career ERA (in seven games) is 5.88.
Weaver is, however, the Angels' best home pitcher. Mike Scioscia held him back just so he could pitch in Anaheim. His ERA there is nearly two runs lower (2.90 vs. 4.78).
Andy Pettitte, meanwhile, is also a better home pitcher (3.71 vs. 4.59), so this is a matchup that definitely favors the Angels (at least on paper).
A few of our hitters have owned the younger Weaver. A-Rod has positively massacred the blond-haired Californian: .333/.474/1.133 (1.607 OPS)!
Additionally, Mark Teixeira and Robbie Cano have OPS's over .930 against Weaver.
On the other hand, Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter and Melky Cabrera have done next to nothing. They all own OPS's under .470 vs. Weaver. Melky's OPS is .237 (yes, that's his OPS, not his batting average), so perhaps we'll see Brett Gardner start in center (UPDATE: nope, it's Melky).
Considering Tex has only one hit in two games so far, he may be due, especially when facing a pitcher he's seen 26 times in his career and done well against. The offense could come down to him and Alex.
Against Pettite, the hitters we need to watch out for are Mike Napoli, Erick Aybar, Vlad Guerrero and Gary Matthews. And no one outside of Howie Kendrick has fared particularly poorly against him.

The good news is we don't need to sweep really
We just need to go 1-2 in LA and we basically own the series. Believe me, I’d love a sweep, but we just need to win one of these next three and I really like Game 4 with CC against Kazmir.
Tough game today, thank god we're going against Bronson Arroyo's long lost fairy brother

I'm hoping
Cousin Jared is as effective for the Halos today as Cousin Jeff was in his tenure with the Yankees. ( I really don’t know if they are kin, but when they have the same last name as me and make Millions of $$ per year—then I’ll try to make the connection :) )

they do this every year
They don’t want to put both LCS games against each other. The Dodgers-Phils are in prime time. They Yankees have had other afternoon LCS starts over the years – the Jeffrey Maier game and the Knoblauch game in 98 both started at around 4 pm, for example(s).

For the sake of the game itself,
I’d rather see 1:00 PM Pacific time start than 5:00 PM Pacific time start. Shadows would be horrible at that time of day. For me personally the 7:00 PM Pacific(10:00PM eastern) is rough because I have to get up to go to work at 5:15 AM

I think it's funny
a lot of Halos fans think the good weather is an advantage for them. It’s not like the Yankees LIKE playing when it’s 40 and raining. They just do better in those conditions than LA. I’m sure our guys prefer 70 and sunny.

and that the angels havent been playing angel baseball. well newsflash! the yankees havent exactly been playing yankee baseball. so really, who’s more screwed?
Thank God for making us Yankees.
You talking about the whiners at Halos Heaven?
Yea, it’s pretty funny. Who gives a sh!t about them? They’re jealous and upset because they’re losing this series. They’ll come up with another excuse if we win today, and an excuse if we win the series. It’s what whiners do. Ignore them.
I wouldn't say that's what whiners do
I’d say it’s what people who are losing do.
+1
If they’re whining, that’s fine with me, because it means that we are winning
Facial LaFleur, total facial.
I’m sure the fans have been bitching (i dont go to enemy blogs… not my thing) but the players themselves. i just heard on MLB network that torii hunter said that about arod’s homerun. maybe it was the reporter’s embellishment or just plain narrative but whatever.
i hope arod hits a 500 foot homerun just to shut them the fuck up
Thank God for making us Yankees.
Angels had just as many chances
to hit a home run over that wall. We hit two in that game. I do believe they hit zero.
Torii's comments are usually quite sporting
So I’d be surprised if he said that. They’ve got enough problems of their own to start worrying about the dimensions of a Stadium they’re only going to see next season now.

I thought Jeters homer was long. And then A-Rod hits it about 50 feet longer!
By the way, it’s not morning. Just saying.
AND THE YANKS COULD'T HIT A HR IN A REAL STAIDUM. HH IS SOOOOO RIGHT.

Haha they banned me, too
And called me fat. Stay classy, Halos. I wasn’t anywhere near as big a dick as their head blogger is.
I think the actual comment that did it
Was my response to the guy saying if that (Andy) isn’t a balk I don’t know what is.
I said in reply “This is an accurate statement.”
how would they know if you were fat or not?
there are alot of dumb-asses over there.

Its true, I’d never be one to deny it, its just impertinent. And apparently funny to them.
But I’d be mad too if my team was about to go down 3-0.

Not sure he knows how.
He’s wind up swinging anyway.
Am I hearing right?
I’m not sure, but I turned the mute off on the TV, and I just heard “HIP HIP JORGE”.
In Angel Stadium? Aren’t those supposed to be Angels fans? Or do they not have enough fans to go to this game that they need Yankees fans to help fill the seats?
It's L.A.

you’re not hitting into DPs in these spots. The next step is to move the runner from first over too.

maybe we can have him hitting in these spots by the time he’s 30. But better late then never.

Swish and Cano
really aren’t doing it today in the clutch. Cano with his force outs (although it is an improvement from his DPs in those situations), and Swisher who is 0 fer 2 in getting a runner in from third with less than two out. Melky isn’t doing well either. Anyone else think Gardner should start a game?

You mean scared? Only Cervelli (and A-Rod in this postseason) is “sacred”.
And he’s made some nice catches out there. Although I still do get a little scared if anything more than a routine play is hit out to him.

how many balls has Damon caught like that this series?
It feels like at least 5-6 times there were balls that looked like hits off the bat, but Damon was practically standing on the line. The scouting department did a pretty good job.

he’s taken maybe a total of 6 steps on three putouts. Great positioning.
Keep it up Andy
lets get another couple of runs here in the fifth.
I wonder how many bombs A-Rod is going to hit before people start pitching around him?
It’s good that Matsui is hitting today. Makes it more difficult to pitch around Alex.
It doesn't matter....
he hit the game tying one last game..
and the loaded the bases TO GET TO HIM.
