CC Sabathia: Good Deal! Yanks win ALCS opener 4-1, work cold to their favor

CC giving a pound to the C.

CC giving a pound to the C.

Man, it's cold out. When I started this whole watching-the-Yankees-bat-from-outside ritual, it was a 65 degree situation. But right now, my digits are creamsicles as I'm typing this. So when I think of the fact CC Sabathia went 8 innings and let up 1 run, I'm more in awe of him, his fat, and this team than ever.

The Yankees beat the Angels 4-1 tonight, thanks to Porky's 7K gem, unrelenting bats against John Lackey, and 3 errors--THREE--from a team that hasn't logged an error since the Cowboys dynasty.

Star-divide

I don't why it feels like Maine in January when it's not even freezing temperature. But it is. Maybe Jorge Posada's right. Maybe it IS "Yankee weather."

Ghosts and unseasonably chilly temperature. Yankee Stadium's answers to all things inexplicable. You can't discount the 10 hits and flat-out absurd defensive that came from a determined New York squad. But on the other hand...there's Torii Hunter letting a single get by him which allowed Derek Jeter to score in the 6th, a throwing error from Lackey, a do-you-have-ir-ok-got-it-wait-what? pop-up blooper between Chone Figgins and Erick Aybar...and that was just on defense.

CC held the slugging monsters from LA to only 4 hits and 1 walk...and zero stolen bases. For all the rampant concern about how in the world the Yankees were ever going to manage the team who's speed can break the sound barrier...there wasn't even so much as an attempt.

The Yanks took an early 2-0 lead with Alex Rodriguez's (who else) sac fly that scored Jeter, and an infield single from Hideki that plated Johnny Damon.

Hideki can thank the 400 pounds of sweatshirt coating Aybar's ears, who couldn't make heads or tails of the whole calling the pop-up thing. Bundled up in so much insulation that I wouldn't be surprised if they all had Pink Panther padding in there, the Angels played like an old school Nintendo baseball game where no player can run in a straight line, and no matter how angrily you bang on the control pad, the player won't move beneath the ball to catch a routine pop up.

This same play engendered ridiculous blown call #3,801 of the playoffs, when A-Rod darted home only to find Jeff Mathis patiently waiting for him with the ball. HOWEVAH, no tag was ever successfully made as A-Rod barrelled over him and touched home. I've been saying for the past week that all these bad calls work both ways, and that it all evens out in the end.

(But there's no reasoning with someone people, as my Mets fan buddy argued that not only does this not come close to making up for the Mauer call--yup, he's still on that--but he also insinuated that the errors weren't entirely accidental. This is what I'm up against.)

Vladimir Guerrero, who ranks 3rd in my Favorite Players Who Aren't Yankees list,' doubled in the 4th, and after Juan Rivera's groundout advanced him to third, Kendry Morales brought him home with a single to left center. Such would be the first and last time an Angel got to see homeplate.

CC never faltered, only going to 3 balls only twice. Thanks to this lights-out dominance when they absolutely needed it the most, the Yankees bullpen is as fresh as ever, with Mariano Rivera serving as the only reliever to enter the game. Anaheim's bullpen, on the other hand, threw a combined 52 pitches over 2 IP of work....35 more than Mo did in a little less than the same amount of time.

Overall another paragon of an outing from the New York Yankees. The ONLY drawbacks of the night:

  • Someone tried to launch a Joba-as-starter symposium while I was outside. Last thing I heard was "he has 4 pitches!" before he deemed it too cold to argue and retreated indoors.
  • 11 runners left on base.
  • 3-for-12 with RISP. I'm okay with this, though, since I don't think everyone needs to play 100 percent every game. Just enough percent to win.

I can't say enough about the defense that backed Tubbo up. After Nick Swisher met quota for the requisite "where-is-your-head?!" move in the outfield, it was nothing but remarkably fluid efforts that saved more than a few runs. "Ok, CC. You scratch our back, we'll scratch yours buy you a cheesesteak."

And no one is happier about this win than Brian Cashman, who tonight saw his off-season Christmas shopping for the Big Boss excel in spades. Mark Teixeira's defense on 1st was mind-blowing, to say the least. When his old pal (and #2 on the aforementioned list) tried to run out a single in the 6th, Tex lunged for the toss to 1st and ended up in a move that looked like he belonged at the top of a pyramid in the National Cheerleading Championships.

The Yanks played smart tonight. They kept it simple, and deserve to win for how patiently and evenly they played this one out. You don't need to look any further than their opponents to see what a frantic, jumpy, uncomfortable, and overanxious team looks like.

And the Angels don't need to look any further than their opponents to see what greatness looks like.

Great performance for CC.

If it was the bottom of the order in the bottom of the 9th, I could see CC pitching the 9th.

But alas, great game by CC and Mo.

Yankees all day.

Also the fact

that he is scheduled to be on short rest.

Speaking of which...

I really wish Girardi would have gone to the bullpen in the 8th, to start it, just because it was a looong 7th and 10 or so less pitches may not seem like a lot, but they are cutting a day of rest off, so it may be the difference in sharpness. This being said, we won’t know what will happen with the weather and we don’t know how CC will perform in warm LA.

yes he will

I love when he pitches behind C C just because he feeds off his performance and pitches good.

cc’s performance tonight made me want to squeal like a prepubescent schoolgirl

Thank God for making us Yankees.

For the love of God, watch the game from indoors tomorrow. Or get heavy gloves. It’s going to be another cold one.

Halo Heaven is convinced that Lacky pitched fanatastic.

What kind of twisted reality do they live in?

Yankees all day.

Really?

All I see from them is that he sucked.

by GMan83201 on Oct 16, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he didn't pitch terribly

With some better defense, he wouldn’t have given up more than 2 runs, and probably could have stayed in until the seventh. He wasn’t as good as CC, but he wasn’t terrible.

As a member

I will say Lackey did okay, but Figgins just sucked crap. Well, good job to you guys.

thank you finally a angels fan that isn;t sipping kool-aid

Lackey did well, but he still would a have give up some runs. Some of the guys over at halos heaven never give credit to the yanks for playing well.

Word

As an LAA fan you will note that Lackey is an uber-emotional pitcher (the pregame analysis called it a “fierce competitor” but those who watch him know it can be a negative thing too…) No doubt he pitches better without the errors, especially the pop-up, but he was not nearly at his best, as he couldn’t get ahead in the count, and couldn’t throw breaking stuff for strikes till the 5th.

Gotta give credit to CC for this win though. The Yanks offense also wasn’t what it could be, which is scary!

Trust me,

I’m not the only sensible Angel fan… :) . In addition to what you said, I was really impressed w/ CC’s screw-fastball :P

Seriously...

the command- on the outside corner, with the movement away from the right-handers, was deadly.

I actually love talking to other teams fans. Angels fans can be baseball fans too!

by BigSnyan on Oct 17, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well...

he did!

If CC had that sort of crappy defense, we’d be saying the same thing…and be down 0-1.

Their crappy D for the most part led to the Yank runs. I was very surprised how HORRIBLE the Angels were in the field last night.

he battled

he wasn’t great but he wasn’t terrible. you take out the Aybar and Hunter errors and he gave up just 2 runs over almost 7 innings. i thought he pitched well enough to give the Angels a chance to win, but they couldn’t do anything against C.C.

wow cyc!

Allowing your fingers to freeze off in order to post a recap! That’s some dedication. What can I say. Cc was dominant, the defense was spectacular and the offense was great! Let’s go aj! And for all those haters who said arod always does well against the twins let’s see what he does after that, suck it!

CC was fucking heroic

man, another game where I felt the opposing team had no chance. The angels were ugly tonight.

by Greenfuzz on Oct 16, 2009 11:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

omg, i feel so giddy now

I’m radiating with confidence now. If we get a solid performance from AJ, I’ll have enough confidence to believe that we will most definitely win this series.

And I’m not scared at all of the NL with the game I saw today. Even with a fragile Philly bullpen, the Dodgers were only able to push in 1 run with a bases loaded walk.

Ohhhhh so confident.

Yankees all day.

whoever wins this series will sweep the WS

The Phillies started Pedro Martinez, who is beyond washed up – and he shut the Dodgers out for seven innings! Could you imagine what CC would do against a Dodgers lineup that can’t hit Pedro?

by long time listener on Oct 17, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

seriously, it's not out of the question

The way CC pitched tonight, combined with the putridity of the Dodgers offense? Especially if CC pitches against them on the road, where he’ll get the pitcher a couple of times.

Lets Not Get Ahead Of Ourselves

While I think the Yankees definitely have their post season swagger back, lets take it one game at a time. I think the reason these teams are making errors is because they are intimidated by the Yankees. Teams are trying to be perfect because they are afraid they cant win otherwise.

by YankeesJets on Oct 17, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i’m sure teams feel like they have to play flawless baseball to beat the yankees because they’re so good this season. a look at the series with the twins and you can see why. mistakes are costly at this juncture and if you make them against these yankees, you’re going to get burned.

that said, as much as we’d all like to see the angels’ defense fail 3 more times, i won’t be counting on it. the boys need to stop leaving so many men on base

Thank God for making us Yankees.

I'm not predicting a Yankees WS win

I’m predicting an AL WS win. The NL is just a lesser league, and either the Yanks or the Angels will make mincemeat out of whichever team makes to the WS.

by long time listener on Oct 17, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the NL was the lesser league

in 2006 (Cardinals) and 2008 (Phillies) and won the World Series both times.

baseball is a lot like college basketball. the Big East was clearly the best conference, maybe one of the best conferences ever. but the National Championship pitted Michigan State (Big Ten) against North Carolina (ACC).

just because the AL is a vastly superior to the little girl’s league NL, doesn’t mean that an AL team will romp in the World Series.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Oct 17, 2009 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

look who the NL faced those years....

why the Tigers and Rays both had great stories that year….those 2 teams weren’t even the best in the AL that year. Not saying they were completely lucky or that they didn’t deserve to be there…but put the Yanks, Pissants or Halos in there, and I don’t think the NL wins.

But lets see what happens this year. The Phillies with guys like Stairs, Dobbs and even Mayberry (is he on the PS roster?) and the Dodgers have Thome, all DHable players that can de-NL themselves in the WS.

I Wouldnt Take The Phillies Or The Dodgers Too Lightly

The Phillies played very well against the Yankees this year, and have plenty of firepower in that lineup, and the Dodgers were the best team in baseball the first half of the season. Nobody thought we could lose to the Marlins in 2003 either. Any team can win in the playoffs, its just a matter of who gets hot.

by YankeesJets on Oct 17, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Amazing.

Great job by CC, a seriously solid outing. I feel a little embarrassed for the Angels… three errors in one game, not to mention the Figgins and Aybar letting the routine popfly drop (as funny as that was!!)… that’s just kind of unexcuseable in postseason play. Kinda made my day though.

On a side note, why do you keep ragging christening CC with ridiculous nicknames? The guy is amazing and you’re kind of demeaning his role with the Yankees and who he is as a person. I’d take CC and all his so-called extra weight over any pitcher in the majors right now.

ha my boy swanny knows me too well

Yeah I am crazy for CC. And his fat. When he lost opening day me and my sis were talking, and she goes, "i dont understand: and I was figured she meant “i dont understand how we lost opening day” so i said, “i know i know” and she responded, “Like seriously, how do you get to be that fat and retain awesomeness? It defies logic. Unprecendented.” And she wasn’t even kdding. Pollina sisters are collectively obssesed with tubbo.

CC was MASSIVE in this game....

I really doubt that while the errors cost the Angels, they had a chance anyway even without the errors. CC was that good.
