Playoff Baseball: Angels at Red Sox

The Angels have a chance to take the first spot in the ALCS, but Fenway is a tough place to win.  I'd like to see this series last a little longer than the Yanks' before the Angels move on.  It's not rooting for the Red Sox, it's wanting better pitching matchups in the ALCS.

Use this as your open thread for the day game.

That's all fine and good but I want the Bosox swept,

humiliated, beaten, destroyed, etc. I trust the Yankees this year and think they can beat the Angels no matter what the pitching match up is.

I'm with you jscape2000

If there’s a chance that we can pitch CC thrice while the Angels can’t pitch Lackey/Weaver three times, well, then, let the Red Sox live for a day more. Maybe let them win two games to bring their fans’ hopes up before dashing them. Or am I just being cruel now?

To be honest

I would prefer that this series get dragged out a little longer so that whoever ends up making it to the ALCS can’t shuffle their pitchers around as well….

But it’s just beyond my capability to root for the Red Sox.

of course...

I want it to go 5 games…

if the series can go 5 games with the Red Sox losing all 5, I’d be even more happy!

Have I mentioned before that I’ve had a mancrush on Vlad since about 2000?

One of the reasons he chose the Angels is because they have an SAP broadcast so his mother can watch the game. As though he isn’t rich enough to hire a broadcast team just for her living room.

He is one of the most talented fun to watch players ever

when I saw him hit a 420 foot home run to center field on a ball that had bounced in the dirt, my man crush was complete.

I mean, are they many better nicknames than Vladdy Daddy?

I have always heard it as

Big Daddy Vladdy, or Vlad the Impaler, but either way the point still holds. It’s beastly.

Capitulating?

I actually can’t believe this. Papelbon is easily the ballplayer I most love to despise, but this would be a pretty spectacular way for Boston to get dumped out of the playoffs.

Yup

And now Mo has a better postseason ERA. Life is good!

by metric on Oct 11, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

one out to go

There’s something to be said for hoping that the series went to 5, and there’s an argument that the Red Sox would be a better opponent if we close out Minn. But I hate the Red Sox too much to not be gleeful at the thought of them getting swept like this.

by long time listener on Oct 11, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

Nobody is Mariano Rivera

In fantasy baseball, the top 3 closers in baseball are Paplebon, Nathan, and Rivera, in that order. I don’t know how Mo is third. But the top 2 closers in baseball, according to fantasy baseball, have both blown huge postseason games. Mo hasn’t. Interesting.

HEY FANTASY BASEBALL IDIOTS!!!! RIVERA IS THE BEST IN BASEBALL!!!!!!

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 11, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

Meh. Why the rage?
Paplebon and Nathan are the best at compiling a specific statistic. Our offense scores enough runs that it takes away a few saves each season from Mo.
Fantasy baseball and baseball have two different goals, but that’s no reason to hate.

lol I know

I just hate Paplebon and I love that the Sox are gone. I needed to rage! It’s okay I’m fine.

Besides, if I’m going to rage, then I might as well rage at Pavano. I really REALLY want to pound him tonight, and have the last game in the Metrodome be a Yankee celebration!

But then realized what I was doing and scrubbed my brain with soap. Still, I’d have liked the series to go a little longer, but that’s different.

That makes me smile.

The announcers have been terrible in every game I’ve seen. Isn’t one of them for the Angels-Sox a Red Sox announcer?

He's blown playoff game for the Mets and Red Sox now

great move by the Sox to pick up a postseason choker. Although Paplebon deserves the blame for this loss.

Again, NOBODY IS MARIANO RIVERA!!!!!!

Never embarass Papelbon

by comparing him to The Great Rivera!

Buh Bye Sux, you pathetic pretenders to baseball power. You’ve never won clean — and you’ve never defended a title either. Only ESPN thinks you’re a dynasty.

by rosebud on Oct 11, 2009 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

holy crap I didn’t finish the game but when I checked espn I was pleasently surprised that boston choked on a two run lead. I was giddy when I saw paplebon cough up two runs in the 8th but I am basking in their loss. Throw your heads back, point and cackle at their failure

Thank God for making us Yankees.

by noonoo on Oct 11, 2009 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

He is still a great closer

Mo has had his failure too. BUT… man was that friggin sweet to see all the Red Sox faces in pure misery! Hey Papi way to go 0 – 20 or whatever the hell you did. I have a feeling the purse strings are opening up this off season for the Sox. They learned their lesson, low risk high reward = no chance of success. There is a reason no one wants some of the pitchers they picked up.

by HappyLuckyGoldenDragonNumber1! on Oct 11, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

he got one hit

what happened? Sox fans always go on and on and on and on about how Ortiz is soooooo clutch and how A-Rod will choke in the playoffs. What the hell happened? Ortiz was 1-12, and A-Rod has hit a game tying homer, gotten a certain call, gone 3-4 w/RISP, and helped the Yankees win. What happened?

by nyyrocks29 on Oct 11, 2009 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Chip Caray...

fisting comments aside, is like a breathe of fresh air compared to the anti-Yankee torture that is Joe Buck.

Darling is extrememly annoying…but the same thing applies to him vs. McCarver. Id rather be stabbed in the ear drum than listen to McCarver.

I’m watching the game and it was 5-2 Sox going into the 8th. I’m watching the Giants RAPE the Raiders, io say to myself we’ll.. these games are about to get boring. So I decide to take a nap. I get up turn on my cellphone on. Right away I get a text message " can you say sweep!!!, I know you can’t wait to go to work tomorrow" immediatley I start scrambbling for the remote flip to TBS " Road Trip"… I turn to Mlb Network.. and their showing highlights of Papelbon blows the save.. immediatley I begin to feel warm and fuzzy inside… I mean I love to watch papsmear choke.. I can’t believe I missed it!!! Even better he choked at home… in front of the Fenway “faithful”…. How quiet was it there? Were there people even still there when he gave up the lead?..Did Don sound like he was going to quiet?!.. Ortiz batted .082.. that is sad..SWEEEP! SWEEP! SWEEP!… Now its our turn!!
