Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Manny a Yankee.  Imagine...

Star-divide

Good evening Yankee fans and happy new year!  Though I am loathe to promote anything positive or in favor of your team (and your way of life), I would like to take a moment to speak hypothetically about...The possibilities.

I just finished reading an article by the notorious Steven A. Smith.  Most would say the guy is off his rocker, however, you can't deny that the guy definitely brings some "flava" to what sometimes is staid and bland sports reporting. The man knows most of what he's talking about even if some declare him a radical gas bag.  In this article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove08/columns/story?columnist=smith_stephen&id=3789788

S.A.S. lobbies for the Yanks to go after Manny.  Personally, as a Mets fan, I don't have a horse in that race but as a general baseball fan I would absolutely love to see it for a few select reasons:

1.  The sheer drama that would play out in New York.  2.  Because I want to see Manny stick it to Boston.  (As much as the Mets hate the Yankees and vice versa, I hate Boston and Philadelphia much, much more).  3.  It would be the most explosive offensive lineup in quite some time.  I'm assuming it would look like this?

1. D. Jeter
2. R. Cano
3. M. Teixeira
4. M. Ramirez (DH)
5. A. Rodriguez
6. J. Damon
7. X. Nady
8. J. Posada
9. B. Gardner

Remember the calm before the "Teixeira signing" storm?  I don't remember a peep from the Yanks discussing that marvelous coup prior to it happening.  Is the same storm brewing for Manny?  Are Cashman and his vultures surveying the landscape below to see how other teams are trying to get "a deal"?

Lord

Steven A. Smith should stick to the NBA, first of all.

Second, his column came out the day before we signed Tex, and it’s been discussed to death and, by most smart souls, ignored and dismissed quickly.

Third, where in the world did you concoct that lineup? Looks like one from the days when Billy Martin would draw names out of a hat. If we signed Manny, we wouldn’t have to change our usual lineup much. It would more likely be:

Damon, LF (L)
Jeter, SS®
Teixeira, 1B (S)
Rodriguez, 3B®
Ramirez, DH®
Posada, C (S)
Nady, RF®
Cano, 2B (L)
Cabrera, CF (S) or Gardner (L)

But the reasons both against signing Manny and why it’s unlikely to happen have all been discussed over and over again on this blog and elsewhere. They boil down to: 1.) Money, 2.) Personality, motivation, and behavior both on and off the field, 3.) Age and length of contract, 4.) Requirement of trading Matsui (preferably) or Swisher.

Dear God

Steven A. Smith also said that the Celtics were going to lose to the Lakers in the Finals in five. Lets just keep listening to him. Elect him President put him in a box and call it:" Armageddon made easy" and sell him at Target

Hmm. Lets see how we can make this work. OK. Heres the plan. Its march first Manny still hasn’t signed. He and Scott Boras are going to from training camp to training camp asking if there are any open spots. All but the Pittsburgh Pirates shut the door in his face.

Then C-Money comes in with a two year 20 million dollar deal (think andy pettitte times two) Manny eagerly signs on the dotted line. Unbeknown to him in it is a secret clause in size 64 font (thats what greed does to you) that requires Manny to cut his hair daily and donate every dollar to Derek Jeters Turn2 foundation.

So yeah any questions anyone?
Lets go sign Manny

Haha, I like how you think

Steven A. Smith is also incredibly annoying and obnoxious. He makes Dick Vitale seem reserved and boring.

Senor S.

My bad. I didn’t pay attention to the word “archive” in that story under his name. Alright then, I guess the point is moot. No harm, no foul.

I'm a baseball fan. What did you expect?

Manny a Yankee....

Regardless of what anyone says and the fact that S.A.S. shouldn’t be opining on Baseball, the reality is that if the Yankees signed Manny for say 4 years at 20 million per year, they would be getting a marketing bonanza bargain. The lineup, for 2009 would be Damon, Jeter, Texeira, A-Rod, Manny, Posada, Nady, Cano & Cabrera/Gardner. Next year maybe Damon leaves, maybe not, but assuming he stays, maybe Cabrera/Gardner moves to right and Jackson starts in center in 2010. In any case, the lineup, 1 through 7 would be a nightmare for pitchers. But the important part would be that the Yankees payroll would basically stay the same over the next four years at where it is now because you would assume that you trade Matsui for prospects and that takes 13 million off and that even if Pettite comes in this year he is gone next year and replaced by Hughes. The team would likely score over 1,000 runs and the whole marketing aspect of A-Rod and Manny both going after 700 home runs batting back to back would make the Yankees so much revenue it would dwarf their salary needs and actually improve MLB’s financial standing because the Yankees would gladly pay the luxury tax and the revenue sharing would be huge. The incremental revenue would be much higher than what you lose in Japan by trading Matsui.

The most important thing is playing baseball and winning, not making money or getting attention
