Well, that sucked

Losing a series to the .394-winning-percentage Mariners has now become the low point of the season. Think about this: Sidney Ponson won our only game of the series, and the M's didn't even start Felix Hernandez.

Three runs or less counter: 61 (that's a lot).

- 'Always look on the bright side of life...'

Phil Hughes dominated the Pawtucket Red Sox tonight, pitching Scranton into the International League finals: 8 ip, 4 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 11 k, with only 94 pitches, an astonishing 74 for strikes. (check out the box score for a video link - you can watch the archived game for free.) That's the Hughes who was ranked the top pitching prospect in baseball entering 2007. Shelley Duncan hit a walk-off, series-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th (for a 2-0 win). When I read that, it reminded me of this.

- In case it crossed your mind, don't try to steal anything from the Stadium. They're jacking up security so they can keep (and then, of course, sell) everything. And the player who this entire Stadium/year is devoted to has been completely devoid of any honors or celebrations.

- Good news for Jet fans out there: Tom Brady may miss the rest of the season. He hurt his knee (with an MRI coming tomorrow) in the first quarter of the Pats 17-10 win over Kansas City.

Tom Brady

I’m far from being a Pats fan (I’m a rabid Dolphins fan, actually), but that’s a shame about Brady. I’m an even more rabid Michigan fan (Go Blue!), so I always root for those guys to do well in the NFL – including Toomer and Manningham of the Giants.

Plus, he and Manning are unquestionably the top ambassadors for the game nowadays so everyone loses in that regard.

Kudos to Hughes for having such a great performance. And you’re right – that’s the Phil Hughes we were expecting to see at times this season.

It’s way too early to give up on this kid.
