"It’s the toughest division in the league, and that’s why when teams go after pitching," outfielder Johnny Damon said, "they can’t just throw a National League guy into the American League East. It’s a grind every single day, and that’s what G.M.’s are figuring out."

Expect the Yankees to ignore all free-agent relievers this winter, confident in the setup corps Cashman has assembled through castoffs (Brian Bruney, Dan Giese, Edwar Ramírez, José Veras) and prospects (Phil Coke, Mark Melancon, Dave Robertson, Humberto Sánchez).
Wang, Joba, Hughes, FA, FA
As Sabathia looks less like an option (loves SoCal, loves to hit in the NL, loves a fatter and fatter contract), I'm working on a breakdown of the other options. With two guys with "ace" stuff already on the squad, criteria #1 becomes durable horse.

this recent CC stuff
isn’t looking good. i’m afraid that losing out on him could lead to a desperate signing of Burnett or Sheets.

I agree
If we can’t sign Sabathia, I start looking at Lowe and Garland before Burnett. Sheets is one of the guys with no experience in the AL, so I think we can cross him off the list.

Sheets is a disaster waiting to happen
but Burnett could be the steal of this off-season. his skills are of a top 10 pitcher, but his ERA doesn’t match. i’d rather bet on skills than ERA, although some pitchers do lack the ability to translate their skills into run prevention.

Burnett
will be 32 in 2009, and has yet to string together consecutive effective, injury free seasons. I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole.

Why isn’t anyone discussing Phil Coke as a starter? Guy has top of the rotation stuff, velocity, and poise (a la Jon Lester). Any 26 yr. old LHP that works quickly, throws 95+, and stays ahead of hitters w/ a high K rate should be seriously considered unless he has never thrown more than 80 innings in a season (he’s 26 so that’s highly unlikely). Was he or was he not a starter in the minor leagues?

he was a starter
and i believe he will be given a chance to win a spot out of ST. but dont expect him to maintain that velocity as a starter. the reason he can crank it up to 96 mph is that he’s only pitching 1-2 innings (Hughes could do the same). as a starter, he would likely sit in the low 90s. this has been the most active year of his pro career, pitching a combined 135.2 innings. so he could probably go to 170 next year.
