2009 Lineup

Since the offense is the problem here is my proposed 2009 lineup.  Remember it is a VERY weak and OLD free agent pool this year (assuming teams pick up options on Vlad, Crawford):

1 - LF - L - Damon (HR/BI/SB/BA 12/60/20/.290; solid leadoff guy; possible flyer on F/A Baldelli?)

2 - SS - R - Jeter (12/70/10/.300; perfect number 2)

3 - RF - L - Abreu (18/90/20/.300; yes!  resign him)

4 - 3B - R - A-Rod (45/125/15/.300; no one better or maligned.  We should be ashamed of how we treat him.  Forget about the money he makes.  He plays hard.  Deferred to Jeter's stature and with his eyes closed hits .295 / 40 / 120.

5 - 2B - L - Cano (20/90/0/.290; time to step up young man)

6 - 1B / LF - R - Nady (20/90/0/.280; solid player)

7 - DH / LF - L - Matsui (20/85/0/.290; stay healthy, please)

8 - C / 1B - S - Posada (15/85/0/.270; solid #8 batter; I would like to keep Pudge as insurance as the guy is a career .302 hitter although sliding of late)

9 - CF - L - Melky (12/70/5/.270; remember him?  Not ready to give him up on him yet; placeholder until Austin comes up in '10)

TOTALS: HR/BI/SB/BA 174/765/70/e.290 figure these players represent 90% of production so the complete team would have 193/850/78/e.287.  Overall, I think a little bit better than average, so there is a good case for getting Teixiera and his 30/120/0/.290, but not for $25MM a year.

Thoughts?

Firstbaseman? Pitchers!

Really, someone who plays first is a must.

Starting pitching will tell the tale. We tried “wait for the kids” this year and it’s a bomb. Time to face the music.

People who are probably never going to be good big league starters:
Kennedy
Ponson
Rasner
Giese
Aceves
Igawa
People who might develop into good (above average) big league starters:
Hughes
Pavano
Chamberlain
People with a real chance to be great:
Chamberrlain

I didn’t include Moose, Pettitte or Wang. They’re all OK, not great but good, if they’re healthy.

Somebody’s going to be hurt. We need a lot of help.

And counting on Posada to

Catch is VERY optimistic. Counting on him to play first is nuts. Where you watching him try to play first? He’s too proud to play that badly long.

Pipe Dreams...

Any chance we could trade for Chipper Jones and play him at first? With his injury history first might let him play for another 3-4 years. He has a $8-11MM vesting option for ’09.

Offering Rocco Baldelli a three year deal loaded with incentives would be worth it. He is only 27 and an unrestricted free agent.

Michael Barrett is also an unrestricted FA and would be an upgrade over Moeller, and make more sense than bringing Pudge back.

I also would bring Abreu back. He has more value than any other available option barring a trade for a previously unavailable player ( Matt Holliday?,Carlos Lee?).

I agree except

Leave Chipper in Atlanta where he belongs. I doubt he’d agree anyway.

Chipper Jones isn't going anywhere

And he gets inured a lot.

Rocco Baldelli is a good 4th outfielder, but his repuation demands more than his stats warrant. Do you really want to give a 3 year deal to a 28 year old outfielder who’s hit .282/.325/.445 for his career. The last time Baldelli played 150 games was in 2003.

Posada absolutely HAS TO BE our catcher for next year. He has had one major injury his entire career. He wasn’t able to throw/hit very well this year because the injury hadn’t healed. What is so difficult to understand here? Now that his rotator cuff is fixed (or whatever it was) he’ll be fine. We have two catchers signed for next season – Posada and Jose Molina. Unless we’re realisting Molina (we should), there really isn’t anything to discuss.

1b, CF, C, SP

I’ve mentioned Baldelli in the past, and think if he could stay healthy, he’d be a nice fit. I also like Nate McLouth. He’s young and just coming into his own. Perhaps we could even snake a deal for someone with a higher ceiling—if we part with some pitlching talent.

We need a catcher. Molina is fine as a backup, but he’s not the future. When we pulled the trigger and moved Dioner Navarro I cringed. The guy has the skills, and to trade a kid with the ability to swing the bat and play solid defensively for a broken down thrower was just stupid. Now we need to grab a quality catcher. I suggest Saltalamacchia from Texas. Apparently there’s an issue between he and Laird. Laird looks like the guy and Salty might be out. We should grab him.

First base: I don’t care who we get so long as they are first and foremost a first-baseman. I’m tired of the auditions at first. Put someone there who can actually play the position.

Finally, starting pitching: CC Sabathia. ’Nuff said.

Completely illogical

Baldelli has played 150 games over the last 3 years, due to a genetic disorder. Not a muscle injury, not a broken bone, not ligament damage, a genetic disorder. That is the kind of thing that you don’t just “fix”. I’d sign him to a one year, incentive-laden deal, but anything beyond is complete foolishness.

If the Pirates were willing to trade Nate McLouth, we would have gotten him at the deadline this year instead of Nady. McLouth has more years of arbitration left. However, I’d hesitate to trade a depth of talent for a 27 year old center fielder who’s had one good season. We already have a good center field prospect.

Your arguments about catcher and first base are contradictory. If you’re implying that Posada is out as catcher, and we need a first baseman who is “first and foremost a first baseman”, then where does that leave Posada?

Again, for the umpteenth time, why are you assuming that Posada can no longer catch?

Posada ...

I never once said anything about Posada being out. But at 37, you don’t just “fix” a shoulder. He’s a question mark. We also don’t have a youthful backup as we did when Girardi caught and Posada was in the wings. That’s all I’m suggesting. Posada may be very effective in 2009, but we ought to be pro-active for a year or two down the road.

Posada has to be our catcher?

so we can be abused by the Angels, Red Sox, and Rays again? Posada as a catcher is over. Maybe Jorge doesn’t realize it, maybe the Yanks don’t realize it, and you don’t realize it.

The age of steroids is over. The game has changed. Having the worst defensive satcher in the league is not worth the numbers Posada gives back. He needs to shut up about Joba, pick up a First baseman’s mit, and work hard in the off-season for the first time since Girardi left for the Cubs.

why is Posada as a catcher over?

He has had one shoulder surgery. When he came off the DL the first time this year, he couldn’t throw because his shoulder hadn’t healed.

For a guy who has been injured ONE TIME in a 10 year career, you are jumping to conclusions really quickly.

There are NO statistics whatsoever to support your claim that Posada is the worst defensive catcher in the league. NONE.

If “Posada as a catcher is over”, as you say, then who is our starting catcher next year? Who is available on the trade market/free agency? Let me know…..
