The real Yankee Captain
The problem with the Yankees is that the Real Captain retired in 2001 - Paul O'Neill. Without O'Neill the Yankees may not have won one Championship. Jeter is showing that he is a great bit player, but cannot lead a team. Until we find the next O'Neill we will live in the land of mediocrity.
Any suggestions on who can fill the void? Kevin Millar would not be a bad fit at 1B.

Jeter’s ability to lead a team is not the reason this Yankees team is failing miserably. If you can’t figure that out, stop watching baseball.

pressure...
What other major league baseball team is stacked like that Yankees and has the expections they do. On top of that let’s see any other player succeed playing in the Yankees the Yankees do. Playing for the greatest franchise in major league sports and playing the the greatest stadium ever in it’s final year where everyone is expecting a championship.. next year is a clean slate, and a new stadium to win championships in.

Posada ...
He’s the heart and soul. But not having O’Neill leading the way isn’t the reason. It’s far more complicated.

Dont wreck on Jeter
He had one bad year, (which wasn’teven that bad individually) I mean this year we haven’t seen the Derek were used to seing, but you can’t just blame him. Basically the reason the team did not do well this year is because everyone on the team did not hit at the same time, everyone had their own little hot streak this season, and it faded as the next one came up. They don’t have Joe Torre anymore, who in my opinion is at least one of the top 5 best managers of all time. I’m not saying, I don’t like Girardi, I do, I justthink the team needs to get more accustomed to his style. Look, most of the players on the team have been greatly influenced by Torre, and have been with him a long time. I think the quicker the accept Girardi, the quicker they will becomegreat again. I mean we can’t get too upset, I mean, how many other teams have gone to the playoffs more often than the Yankees recently? One bad season shouldn’t destroy a great player’s career.

Kevin Millar?!?!?!?
please God, anyone but him! I’d rather see Josh Phelps as the Yankees’ full-time 1B than that schmuck.

This is not an anti-Jeter post
Thanks for the comments, but I was not being negative on Jeter. Jeter is an excellent player, but he does not have Captain material. Lead by example – definitely. But rally the troops when times are bad, or kick people in the butt when they are slacking – he just does not have that.
Any guesses on how many water coolers would have been destroyed if O’Neill was there this year. I just want to see the Yankees get someone like O’Neill with the fire and guts.
We have a gutless team. Maybe Chamberlain? But he is too young and not an everyday player. Who will it be? Maybe Damon?

What the hell?
I hate this completely non-objective analysis…..
So you mean to tell me if we bring in Kevin Millar, and his .240 batting average, .325 on-base percentage, and .407 slugging percentage, coupled with his Giambi-esque defense, we’re going to win more games because he “leads by example with fire and guts”???
Do fire and guts matter if he sucks at the plate and sucks on defense?
Apparantly not…..

Kevin Millar
Still thinks he’s a Red Sox player. He’s just as happy when Boston wins as when Baltimore wins..even when they’re palying each other. I say him talking to Fox sports last playoffs and he kept saying “we” when discussing the Red Sox players…Yeah, let’s get him for sure.

Millar for lack of another name
Okay, so now I’m shot down because of Millar. I could not think of another player with the fire of O’Neill. Give me some available options. Nothing has changed. THIS TEAM HAS NO FIRE. IT LOST IT’S DRIVE WHEN O’NEILL RETIRED.

It's really not a discussion worth having
“fire” and “drive” are adjectives we usually use when we can’t say “good hitter”.
How about David Eckstein? He leads the league in “peskiness” and “grit”.
