PREGAME NOTES:

Bobby Abreu is 16-for-39 (.410) over his current nine-game hitting streak with 13 runs scored and 7 XBH.
The Yanks have scored 5 runs or more in five straight games for the first time since April.
Scott Feldman is a lifetime 1-0, 6.00 ERA, 1.83 WHIP in 2 games (one start) against the Yanks. He is 1-1, 4.80 ERA, 1.35 WHIP in 11 games (9 starts) at home this season.
Mike Mussina is a lifetime 17-13, 3.74 ERA, 1.12 WHIP in 36 starts against the Rangers. He is 5-1, 3.43 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 7 starts on the road this season.
Rangers' hitters vs. Moose can be viewed here. Yanks' hitters vs. Feldman can be viewed here.
PETTITTE COULD MISS NEXT START: So says Mark Feinsand. Hey, why not? The Yanks rotation obviously needed another challenge anyways.
NOW PETTITTE SAYS FEINSAND IS FULL OF BS: Okay, he didn't really say that - but he did reject the notion that he could miss his next start:
"I am fine. [Missing a start] is news to me," Pettitte said, speaking in the Yankees clubhouse before tonight's game in Texas. "I feel great. No one has ever discussed missing a start with me. I am pitching. I have not discussed missing a start with anybody."
HUGHES PITCHING FOR SCRANTON: Phil Hughes pitches tonight for the 1st place Scranton Yankees against the hated Pawtucket Red Sox and will be limited to a 60-70 pitch count.
You can follow the action here via MiLB and be sure to check out Chad Jennings' blog for all the details.
MELKY SITS AGAIN: I just love typing that. Although, it's crystal clear that Girardi's explanation of Melky getting a couple of days off simply to give others a half game off as the DH is total BS.
Good. This move had been a long time coming. Why Girardi had so much faith in him for three months is beyond me.

Why dont we lat Mosse miss a start just for kicks, and have our entire rotation filled with scrubs.

Melky
why does the front page on the yankees mlb site say Melky’s gonna be in the lineup…wishful thinking for Melky

Maybe there was a late scratch
I’ll find out shortly.

So far, so good for Hughes:
3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K—42 pitches, 26 strikes
Chad Jennings says his fastball has good zip at 93-95 MPH and he’s thrown some nasty curves.

So...
who’s ready for another 8-game win streak to round up this long road trip?

Another Hughes update:
4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K—55 pitches, 32 strikes
It appears that his stuff is pretty good tonight but his control / command isn’t quite there yet. Not a big shock all things considered.

do we lead the league in double plays?
Are we on some kind of record pace? It sure feels like it.

Final line on Hughes:
4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K—68 pitches, 40 strikes

OK Moose
Let’s have a shutout (3 pitcher)

Damon feeling good at the plate....
He may be 0-for-2, but he’s taken 21 pitches in two ABs so far tonight.
That’s astounding when you consider Feldman had thrown just 40 pitches total.

He is having a great year.
Too bad he throws like a girl.

People make way too much of his arm
He’s got a ring. And the Yanks won 4 rings with Bernie Williams in CF.
My mother could take an extra base on William’s arm.

Boy, A-Rod has had a horrific series....
0-for-12 with four GIDPs.

Mark Melancon dominates again...

He's got a few more tests....
He came into the middle of an inning tonight for the first time all season.
They also want to test him with runners on base and see how he handles getting out of trouble. Right now, it seems like continuing to work on his change and getting him to work out of trouble are two of his final tests.
A few weeks ago, I thought they might keep him in the minors this season. But the trade of Farnsworth was the real sign that they are probably going to give him a shot.
He’s going to have some Joba rules of his own once he does get promoted.

Oh yeah....
they want to pitch him in back-to-back games as well. He hasn’t done that all season either.

If or when
they do bring him up who do you see going?
I see a rotation of
Moose, Pettitte,IPK,Hughes, and sad to say it Sid the Kid
Move Giese back to long relief- he has been so good there
I would say robertson gets the boot.

Depends what happens with the rotation
But the smart money would be Rasner getting DFA’d or Giese going down. I’d keep Giese. He’s done a great job as the long man. Kennedy is going to take Britton’s spot tomorrow.
I’d keep Robertson. The guy has really only had one bad outing – although it was a really bad outing (0.1 IP, 5 ER). That one outing really skews his ERA.

oh man
If the Yankees did that, I’d be wrecking my living room right now

I think thats
all for the Moose- last start they pulled him before they needed to also.
Keep him fresh we can’t afford for him to regress to last year.

Moose was outstanding again tonight
Can’t say enough about how great he’s been this season.

Hope he gets his first 20 win season regardless of what happens with the team

That would be an amazing accomplishment
considering just how bad he was last season. As smart as Moose is – even he can’t figure out why he’s been so good this season.

Damn...
an insurance run would have been nice because I don’t trust Bruney at all in a close game. Issues way too many free passes.

Bruney
right back into 8th inning role!

Hmmm....
That’s one ER in 16 innings since Molina replaced Pudge.

Molina
is a hell of a catcher, too bad he can’t do it full time

If
Girardi sticks with this OF alignment, and IF Matsui comes back and is the DH, then they can carry Molina in the 9 hole.
Maybe it’s me but the pitchers just look different when he’s back there.

Re:
But Ponson did pitch 7 scoreless against the Angels with Pudge in his last outing.
And Pettitte has had two bad outings in a row – one with Pudge and the other with Molina on Tues.

Fair point
I don’t have a problem with Pudge (yet). It was more praise for Jose than a knock on Pudge.
Best case scenario is Pudge hits and handles the staff well. Jose can do the latter but not the former obviously.
The way he and Mussina move the ball in and out and up and down and slow, slower, fast (ish) is fun to watch. He almost never shakes him off.
