A Yankee fan and a Red Sox fan walk into a bar
It's the start of some strange unwritten joke, but it happened this weekend.
My best friend is a Red Sox fan (what can I say, I went to college in Boston), and he came down to Philly (where I live) for the weekend. We went to a bar and watched the Phils lose to the Cards. His take on the Manny trade was 'good riddance'. I wonder if he'll be saying that come late September and (hopefully not) October.
- Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano are getting close(r). They both pitched for Single-A Charleston tonight. Hughes was particularly impressive, striking out five in 3.2 innings with one hit and one walk (and two wild pitches). The ballpark's radar gun had Hughes hitting 101 mph! That's doubtful, but the same gun did have Pavano topping out at 93 (which seems about right) in the same game, and Hughes topping out at 93 in his previous outing (which again seems about right). We probably won't know the truth until he makes it back to the Bigs.
- Part of the reason Cashman felt Kyle Farnsworth was expendable was the mending Brian Bruney, who made his first appearance since April 22 tonight. He was a bit erratic, throwing just 11 of 20 pitches for strikes, but his velocity sat in the mid-90s.

It's going to be awhile before I trust Bruney
He was spectacular early this season, but he’s probably going to be more like the Bruney of 2007 coming back from injury.
This was a good game to get him some action. But frankly, I don’t trust him at all in a close game.
Also, the radar gun for Hughes’ outing tonight was total BS. Hughes cannot throw 100 MPH. I don’t care what that gun said.
He can reach 96 MPH when he’s feeling strong and everything is going his way, but he usually sits around 92-94 MPH.
Frankly, if he can locate it and his offspeed stuff is working – that’s more than a good enough velocity to get major league hitters out.

radar gun
i was surprised by those readings too. as was Charleston’s announcer. he even went to the scoreboard booth between innings to check, but there was apparently no problem.

I heard that too
But it’s total BS. I know Hughes has been out for a few months, but they didn’t clone Joba’s arm and attach it to Hughes.
It is certainly possible that he could have picked up a tick or two with refined mechanics. But Hughes has never thrown close to 100 MPH in his life.
His ultra max is about 96 MPH.

Wouldn’t it be something if Carl Freaking Pavano wound up saving our season?
