PREGAME NOTES:
Here's a strange stat - including yesterday's 8-2 victory over the Angels, the Yanks are now 6-1 on the season after being shutout the previous game.
John Lackey is a lifetime 4-7, 4.81 ERA, 1.54 WHIP in 13 starts against the Yanks. But he is 3-2, 3.09 ERA, 1.48 WHIP in his last 7 starts against them.
Darrell Rasner has never faced the Angels. He is 3-3, 3.80 ERA, 1.41 WHIP in 7 starts at the Stadium this season.
Angels' hitters vs. Rasner can be viewed here. Yanks' hitters vs. Lackey can be viewed here.
CANO REMAINS OUT: Robinson Cano is again out of the lineup today with a bruised hand he suffered from a swing last Sunday night against the Red Sox. He hopes to return to action tomorrow night against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
KENNEDY START: For those of you interested, Ian Kennedy is expected to start today for Scranton and figures to be the first option to replace either Darrell Rasner or Sidney Ponson in the rotation if and when the Yanks decide to make a change. His past three starts: 20.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 14 K

Let's hope the Yanks can steal this one
without those guys. But with Rasner on the mound, it’s still a tall order against this team with Lackey on the mound.
It goes to show you how stats are often misleading
The Yanks have committed only 55 errors on the season – which ranks #2 in the AL behind Cleveland.
But everyone knows that the Yanks are not a good defensive ballclub. Sure, they usually catch most balls within range, but they don’t get to a lot of balls they should.
that was quick
this game might be over by the 4th inning

If Kennedy pitches well today, I think they have to give him a shot at taking Rasner or Ponson's spot
Not sure
The only thing is that Rasner’s next scheduled start would be Fri against these same Angels in LA. I’m not sure the Yanks are going to want to throw Kennedy into that fire right away.
If and when they do promote Kennedy, they might elect to wait and do it next week against either MIN or KC.
true, but wouldn’t hurt to throw a different look at the Angels. Also, if Kennedy were to get shelled his first outting, the little confidence he probably has would get hurt more by the Royals than the Angels
But he's more likely to get shelled against the best team in MLB
Plus, they do a lot on the bases to force the issue and Kennedy’s had a lot of trouble in the past against teams like that.
They are beating Rasner like a drum. He’s lucky that one ball was at Giambi or it’d be a massacre.

waste of an at-bat
Better than a double play, at least

I hate to say it
but I’m with Michael Kay. I hate that bunt when you’re down by two runs in the 1st inning.
That's why error stats are so misleading
That should have been an out, but Giambi couldn’t make the throw.
on the replay (tbs) it didn’t look like Giambi had a problem getting the ball out, he was just indecisive
Hopefully....
Rasner can throw a few more zeros up there because the Yanks can’t afford to burn out their pen. They don’t have another off day until August 14th.
In case you’re wondering…
Kennedy today so far in Scranton:
3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — 36 pitches, 28 strikes
Rasner might want to collect some dirt from the mound
This might be the last time he pitches there.

they need to score AT LEAST 2 of these runs
and I have a sinking feeling a double play is on the horizon

Nicely done, Abreu
Please let him walk at the end of the season. I don’t care if he hits .400 between now and October.
everyone wants to be the goat today
Rasner stinks up the joint. A-Rod Ks twice. Abreu runs us out of a rally. Someone’s probably going to set fire to the clubhouse.

both Kennedy & Geiss seem like better options than Ponson or Ranser right now

1st & 3rd, no one out
Instead of being excited, I’m scared.

nice AB there
I was ready to flip out if he struck out again, so I’ll give him credit for working the walk.

hey Abreu
If Nady hits a fly ball, STAY AT SECOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They really need to get Giambi out of the #5 slot
He’s not protecting A-Rod at all and he has been just dreadful for a month.
shit
If that had stayed in the park, that would’ve been 3 runs. I guess we’ll take what we can get.

now would be a great time for Betemit to crank one
I’ll settle for a fly ball, even

raise your hand if you think Melky is going to come through here
I expect to see no hands raised.

open your eyes
and witness a strikeout. on a pitch at his feet.

I must say....
I’m kind of shocked they are back in this game. That glass jaw theory has a lot of truth to it.
Give it up for Giese
He’s not a starter, but he has really been great as the long man.
If and when Rasner gets booted from the rotation, he should go down to Scranton.
wow
If you had told me they were going to tie it up when it was 5-0, I would have had you fitted for a straight jacket. And now they actually have a chance to look at this game.

I don't get it
Farnsworth had been there for 3 years so I guess he developed from friendships with the team.
It can’t be because they lost a huge cog in that pen.
It looks like we've found their #5 hitter
Get Giambi out of that spot and put Nady in.
Right now, the co-players of the game are Nady and Giese.
yikes
Losing this game would be devastating.

start packing for texas
This team does not have a second comeback in them.
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:52 PM EDT reply actions
Why wasn't he pulled?
WTF was that? Walks galore…Jesus…
Giambi is killing us
Nady picked him up twice…Edwar looks unhittable and then nibbles…
swing away 3-0
Melky his a homer, everyone’s happy.
Yes, I know it won’t happen.

For all the YES talk about how great the Angels defense is, without their D, we are not in this game at all.

true
he essentially hit a double play ball. getting to 3rd is the first thing he’s done right all day.

The Angels are desperate to give this game away.

also
I’d like to order a 1-2-3 9th by Rivera, please.

And another
and blows lead. He still sucks for us.
I must admit....
I’m surprised how much fight they are showing today. They usually fold when they get punched hard.
yeah
Except for that 12-11 game v. Kansas City, I can’t think of a game where they’ve fought like this all year.
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions
i don't want to downplay the fight in them...but errors didn't help the angels
perhaps this is where they turn the corner for good, but then again we’ve thought that before
There you go....
Farnsworth blows it for the Yanks even when he’s pitching for the Tigers.
Farnsy being Farnsy.
I think they showed Veras & Marte up when the game was still in doubt on YES.
