PREGAME NOTES:

Here's a strange stat - including yesterday's 8-2 victory over the Angels, the Yanks are now 6-1 on the season after being shutout the previous game.

John Lackey is a lifetime 4-7, 4.81 ERA, 1.54 WHIP in 13 starts against the Yanks.  But he is 3-2, 3.09 ERA, 1.48 WHIP in his last 7 starts against them.

Darrell Rasner has never faced the Angels.  He is 3-3, 3.80 ERA, 1.41 WHIP in 7 starts at the Stadium this season.

Angels' hitters vs. Rasner can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Lackey can be viewed here.

CANO REMAINS OUT:  Robinson Cano is again out of the lineup today with a bruised hand he suffered from a swing last Sunday night against the Red Sox.  He hopes to return to action tomorrow night against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.

KENNEDY START:  For those of you interested, Ian Kennedy is expected to start today for Scranton and figures to be the first option to replace either Darrell Rasner or Sidney Ponson in the rotation if and when the Yanks decide to make a change.  His past three starts:  20.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 14 K

Let's hope the Yanks can steal this one

without those guys. But with Rasner on the mound, it’s still a tall order against this team with Lackey on the mound.

It goes to show you how stats are often misleading

The Yanks have committed only 55 errors on the season – which ranks #2 in the AL behind Cleveland.

But everyone knows that the Yanks are not a good defensive ballclub. Sure, they usually catch most balls within range, but they don’t get to a lot of balls they should.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:14 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

that was quick

this game might be over by the 4th inning

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 1:15 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not sure

The only thing is that Rasner’s next scheduled start would be Fri against these same Angels in LA. I’m not sure the Yanks are going to want to throw Kennedy into that fire right away.

If and when they do promote Kennedy, they might elect to wait and do it next week against either MIN or KC.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:23 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

true, but wouldn’t hurt to throw a different look at the Angels. Also, if Kennedy were to get shelled his first outting, the little confidence he probably has would get hurt more by the Royals than the Angels

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But he's more likely to get shelled against the best team in MLB

Plus, they do a lot on the bases to force the issue and Kennedy’s had a lot of trouble in the past against teams like that.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They are beating Rasner like a drum. He’s lucky that one ball was at Giambi or it’d be a massacre.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 1:17 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

waste of an at-bat

Better than a double play, at least

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hate to say it

but I’m with Michael Kay. I hate that bunt when you’re down by two runs in the 1st inning.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:28 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Girardi should just start doing the opposite of what he wants to because in situations where he should bunt he doesn’t and when he shouldn’t, he does

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sigh...

You can’t walk the #9 hitter who is batting .189 on the season.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No kidding.

It’s damn frustrating to watch.

by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 1:37 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's why error stats are so misleading

That should have been an out, but Giambi couldn’t make the throw.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:39 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

on the replay (tbs) it didn’t look like Giambi had a problem getting the ball out, he was just indecisive

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:42 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no extra runs scored, but still a bad situation

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:42 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hopefully....

Rasner can throw a few more zeros up there because the Yanks can’t afford to burn out their pen. They don’t have another off day until August 14th.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

oh those yanks and first pitch swings

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:47 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In case you’re wondering…

Kennedy today so far in Scranton:

3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — 36 pitches, 28 strikes

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:58 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sigh....

Rasner walks him again.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 2:08 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good grief...

...that’s twice he’s walked the #9 hitter.

by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 2:08 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Awful

just awful….It’s hard to watch.

by John Amato on Aug 3, 2008 2:14 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep,

it’s enough to make a grown man cry.

by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 2:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nicely done, Abreu

Please let him walk at the end of the season. I don’t care if he hits .400 between now and October.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 2:27 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

everyone wants to be the goat today

Rasner stinks up the joint. A-Rod Ks twice. Abreu runs us out of a rally. Someone’s probably going to set fire to the clubhouse.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:29 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Man,

that sure would have been nicer last inning with two on.

by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 2:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kennedy update:

5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K—75 pitches, 51 strikes.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

both Kennedy & Geiss seem like better options than Ponson or Ranser right now

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

1st & 3rd, no one out

Instead of being excited, I’m scared.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

nice AB there

I was ready to flip out if he struck out again, so I’ll give him credit for working the walk.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:56 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

C'mon, Giambi...

...my kingdom for a hit.

by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 2:57 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hey Abreu

If Nady hits a fly ball, STAY AT SECOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:58 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They really need to get Giambi out of the #5 slot

He’s not protecting A-Rod at all and he has been just dreadful for a month.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:01 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

shit

If that had stayed in the park, that would’ve been 3 runs. I guess we’ll take what we can get.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I must say....

I’m kind of shocked they are back in this game. That glass jaw theory has a lot of truth to it.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kennedy's final line:

7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K—96 pitches, 67 strikes

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:18 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Give it up for Giese

He’s not a starter, but he has really been great as the long man.

If and when Rasner gets booted from the rotation, he should go down to Scranton.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wow

If you had told me they were going to tie it up when it was 5-0, I would have had you fitted for a straight jacket. And now they actually have a chance to look at this game.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:28 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, hell yes...

...Nady being a hero. Good grief, he killed that ball.

by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 3:32 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It looks like we've found their #5 hitter

Get Giambi out of that spot and put Nady in.

Right now, the co-players of the game are Nady and Giese.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:35 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yikes

Losing this game would be devastating.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he shook him off twice

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 3:50 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

start packing for texas

This team does not have a second comeback in them.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:52 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why wasn't he pulled?

WTF was that? Walks galore…Jesus…

by John Amato on Aug 3, 2008 3:52 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Giambi is killing us

Nady picked him up twice…Edwar looks unhittable and then nibbles…

by John Amato on Aug 3, 2008 3:53 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

swing away 3-0

Melky his a homer, everyone’s happy.

Yes, I know it won’t happen.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:58 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

For all the YES talk about how great the Angels defense is, without their D, we are not in this game at all.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 4:01 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Angels are desperate to give this game away.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 4:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Damn...

A-Rod got lucky. But I’ll gladly take it.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 4:10 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

also

I’d like to order a 1-2-3 9th by Rivera, please.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 4:11 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I must admit....

I’m surprised how much fight they are showing today. They usually fold when they get punched hard.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 4:15 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

Except for that 12-11 game v. Kansas City, I can’t think of a game where they’ve fought like this all year.

by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 4:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i don't want to downplay the fight in them...but errors didn't help the angels

perhaps this is where they turn the corner for good, but then again we’ve thought that before

by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 4:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess that explains why they left Edwar out there

Because Mo wasn’t going to be available today.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 4:23 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There you go....

Farnsworth blows it for the Yanks even when he’s pitching for the Tigers.

Farnsy being Farnsy.

by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 4:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Girardi just said Mo had “a little spasm in his back.”
