PREGAME NOTES:
Here's a strange stat - including yesterday's 8-2 victory over the Angels, the Yanks are now 6-1 on the season after being shutout the previous game.
John Lackey is a lifetime 4-7, 4.81 ERA, 1.54 WHIP in 13 starts against the Yanks. But he is 3-2, 3.09 ERA, 1.48 WHIP in his last 7 starts against them.
Darrell Rasner has never faced the Angels. He is 3-3, 3.80 ERA, 1.41 WHIP in 7 starts at the Stadium this season.
Angels' hitters vs. Rasner can be viewed here. Yanks' hitters vs. Lackey can be viewed here.
CANO REMAINS OUT: Robinson Cano is again out of the lineup today with a bruised hand he suffered from a swing last Sunday night against the Red Sox. He hopes to return to action tomorrow night against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
KENNEDY START: For those of you interested, Ian Kennedy is expected to start today for Scranton and figures to be the first option to replace either Darrell Rasner or Sidney Ponson in the rotation if and when the Yanks decide to make a change. His past three starts: 20.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 14 K

Nice to see Vlad and Hunter out of the starting lineup

Let's hope the Yanks can steal this one
without those guys. But with Rasner on the mound, it’s still a tall order against this team with Lackey on the mound.

It goes to show you how stats are often misleading
The Yanks have committed only 55 errors on the season – which ranks #2 in the AL behind Cleveland.
But everyone knows that the Yanks are not a good defensive ballclub. Sure, they usually catch most balls within range, but they don’t get to a lot of balls they should.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:14 PM EDT 0 recs
that was quick
this game might be over by the 4th inning

If Kennedy pitches well today, I think they have to give him a shot at taking Rasner or Ponson's spot
by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:15 PM EDT 0 recs
Not sure
The only thing is that Rasner’s next scheduled start would be Fri against these same Angels in LA. I’m not sure the Yanks are going to want to throw Kennedy into that fire right away.
If and when they do promote Kennedy, they might elect to wait and do it next week against either MIN or KC.

true, but wouldn’t hurt to throw a different look at the Angels. Also, if Kennedy were to get shelled his first outting, the little confidence he probably has would get hurt more by the Royals than the Angels

But he's more likely to get shelled against the best team in MLB
Plus, they do a lot on the bases to force the issue and Kennedy’s had a lot of trouble in the past against teams like that.

They are beating Rasner like a drum. He’s lucky that one ball was at Giambi or it’d be a massacre.

waste of an at-bat
Better than a double play, at least
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 1:25 PM EDT 0 recs
I hate to say it
but I’m with Michael Kay. I hate that bunt when you’re down by two runs in the 1st inning.

Girardi should just start doing the opposite of what he wants to because in situations where he should bunt he doesn’t and when he shouldn’t, he does

Sigh...
You can’t walk the #9 hitter who is batting .189 on the season.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:35 PM EDT 0 recs
That's why error stats are so misleading
That should have been an out, but Giambi couldn’t make the throw.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:39 PM EDT 0 recs
on the replay (tbs) it didn’t look like Giambi had a problem getting the ball out, he was just indecisive
by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 1:42 PM EDT 0 recs
Hopefully....
Rasner can throw a few more zeros up there because the Yanks can’t afford to burn out their pen. They don’t have another off day until August 14th.

In case you’re wondering…
Kennedy today so far in Scranton:
3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — 36 pitches, 28 strikes
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 1:58 PM EDT 0 recs
Good grief...
...that’s twice he’s walked the #9 hitter.
by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 2:08 PM EDT 0 recs
Rasner might want to collect some dirt from the mound
This might be the last time he pitches there.

I remember a time when a 5 run deficit for the Yankees meant nothing
by emille2 on Aug 3, 2008 2:15 PM EDT 0 recs
they need to score AT LEAST 2 of these runs
and I have a sinking feeling a double play is on the horizon
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:24 PM EDT 0 recs
Nicely done, Abreu
Please let him walk at the end of the season. I don’t care if he hits .400 between now and October.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 2:27 PM EDT 0 recs
everyone wants to be the goat today
Rasner stinks up the joint. A-Rod Ks twice. Abreu runs us out of a rally. Someone’s probably going to set fire to the clubhouse.
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:29 PM EDT 0 recs
Man,
that sure would have been nicer last inning with two on.
by skwire on Aug 3, 2008 2:38 PM EDT 0 recs
Kennedy update:
5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K—75 pitches, 51 strikes.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 2:53 PM EDT 0 recs
both Kennedy & Geiss seem like better options than Ponson or Ranser right now

1st & 3rd, no one out
Instead of being excited, I’m scared.

nice AB there
I was ready to flip out if he struck out again, so I’ll give him credit for working the walk.

Giambi has been horrific this season with RISP
Let’s hope he has an epiphany here.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 2:57 PM EDT 0 recs
hey Abreu
If Nady hits a fly ball, STAY AT SECOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 2:58 PM EDT 0 recs
They really need to get Giambi out of the #5 slot
He’s not protecting A-Rod at all and he has been just dreadful for a month.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:01 PM EDT 0 recs
shit
If that had stayed in the park, that would’ve been 3 runs. I guess we’ll take what we can get.
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:02 PM EDT 0 recs
now would be a great time for Betemit to crank one
I’ll settle for a fly ball, even
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:03 PM EDT 0 recs
Sigh...
Betemit. Just make contact. Hit a fly ball. I’m not looking for anything more.

I expect to see no hands raised.

Melky looked bad on that swing. Again. More of the same.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:08 PM EDT 0 recs
I must say....
I’m kind of shocked they are back in this game. That glass jaw theory has a lot of truth to it.

Kennedy's final line:
7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K—96 pitches, 67 strikes

Give it up for Giese
He’s not a starter, but he has really been great as the long man.
If and when Rasner gets booted from the rotation, he should go down to Scranton.
by anaconda on Aug 3, 2008 3:20 PM EDT 0 recs
wow
If you had told me they were going to tie it up when it was 5-0, I would have had you fitted for a straight jacket. And now they actually have a chance to look at this game.
by long time listener on Aug 3, 2008 3:28 PM EDT 0 recs
Oh, hell yes...
...Nady being a hero. Good grief, he killed that ball.

I don't get it
Farnsworth had been there for 3 years so I guess he developed from friendships with the team.
It can’t be because they lost a huge cog in that pen.

It looks like we've found their #5 hitter
Get Giambi out of that spot and put Nady in.
Right now, the co-players of the game are Nady and Giese.

yikes
