PREGAME NOTES:

Yanks are on a bit of a roll having won six of their last eight games.

David Ortiz is just 6-for-29 (.207) against the Yanks this season with a homer, no walks and six strikeouts.

Tim Wakefield is a lifetime 9-17, 5.14 ERA, 1.44 WHIP in 47 games (30 starts) against the Yanks.  He is 0-1, 6.94 ERA, 1.46 WHIP in 2 starts against them in 2008.

Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 16-7, 3.54 ERA, 1.37 WHIP in 31 games (29 starts) against the Red Sox.  He is 1-1, 5.06 ERA, 1.87 WHIP in 2 starts against them in 2008.

Red Sock hitters vs. Pettitte can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Wakefield can be viewed here.

JOBA TO THROW THURSDAY:  Joba Chamberlain is expected to throw 45 pitches in the pen on Thursday and the Yankee hierarchy will make an evaluation on his status after his session.

Joe Girardi offered no details but it is possible that Chamberlain could be activated after his session and return to the bullpen so that he can be stretched out again for a move back into the rotation.

Not sure if that's wise, but it seems that the results of this series could make the decision on Chamberlain for them.

LETS GO YANKS!

It’s now or never. A sweep would be nice.

Don't think that either of us is getting a sweep...

Do you know if the game is on national TV? I’m stuck in Tampa.

Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

A sweep would be nice

And I think we have to sweep one series or the other to win the wild card, just considering the number of wins it will take to beat the Twins.

Even if they do play well this series

I’d be worried about Toronto this weekend with the whole Boston hangover and all combined with their inability to hit guys like Halladay or Burnett.

Trying to get Gameday to load

what happened?

Damon hooked one just inside the foul pole

And looked off-balanced when he did it.

This ump

is all over the road. Balls are strikes and strikes are balls.

A stupid run on two 60 foot singles

WTF

How deep is AROD playing third?

by BillyBobisdrunk on Aug 26, 2008 7:35 PM EDT   0 recs

not Arod's fault

It's a damn shame Matsui had that knee problem

because he would have made such an enormous difference in the lineup behind A-Rod instead of Giambi.

One guy is hitting .343 / .450 / .507 in 67 AB with RISP and the other guy is hitting .205 / .352 / .321 in 112 AB with RISP.

I’ll let you figure out who’s who.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 7:46 PM EDT   0 recs

buckle up

Looks like there are going to be a lot of runs scored tonight. And tomorrow, for that matter.

by jscape2000 on Aug 26, 2008 7:50 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nah....

There have been three really cheap hits already tonight. Two were nothing more than swinging bunts and the other was a weak jam shot that found a hole (Bay).

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 7:52 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Nevertheless

Pettitte has to be better than this.

Allowing that hit to Ellsbury was inexcusable. This lineup has 4 hitters in it and he’s already given up 3 runs. Boo.

by matthaggs on Aug 26, 2008 7:56 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't disagree

But it’s not like Pettitte is getting hammered. I think it’s safe to say that the final score will not be 3-2.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 8:00 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

but you can tell he’s not on his game. The ball isn’t going where he wants it to go.

And the ump isn’t helping any.

Just got in

nice to see the middle of the lineup has done jack while the bottom 3 all have hits

I'm looking forward

to Nady in right next season.

Hmmm

Matsui or Abreu? I still want Damon.

by bronxbound on Aug 26, 2008 8:25 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I hate to say it.......

but I’m getting the growing suspicion that they migh bring Abreu back next season – which I think would be moronic.

The only way I’d consider bringing Abreu back is if he accepted a one-year deal and was the primary DH.

But that’s obviously not going to happen because there is already a logjam at the position with Matsui, Posada, and sometimes Damon for that role on the depth chart.

I just hope they don’t bring him back. Cut your losses and move on.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 8:29 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

gamecast

made that look like a dying quail… how was it hit?

I think Andy could

benefit from a B-12 shot. Is there a personal trainer in the house?

by bronxbound on Aug 26, 2008 8:28 PM EDT   0 recs

If

Arod is on the bag there and not in front of it, Lowrie is out.

And nice job by Abreu air-mailing the cutoff man.

And nice job by Giambi not throwing home.

This team has the baseball IQ of Forrest Gump.

Well....

at least some exciting college football starts this weekend.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 8:30 PM EDT   0 recs

Why are we paying this Ass 28 million or whatever to allow 3 hits to him?

i am really starting to wonder if this idiot is a cancer to this team.

by MedFan on Aug 26, 2008 8:31 PM EDT   0 recs

How is this all A-Rod's fault?

I’ll never understand all the A-Rod hating.

  • Pettitte didn’t pitch well
  • Giambi started walking back to the dugout when another run scored
  • Abreu threw a lollipop to home plate

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 8:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's not his fault

until he hits into a double play in a few minutes. : )

both

can’t have enough pitching…if one or the other or both don’t pan out so be it, but wouldn’t hurt to have them on the roster

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 8:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think both will be back

even if they do manage to sign Sabathia.

Hughes and Kennedy will start 2009 in Scranton.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 8:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

3 runs is nothing

the team’s avg. over 6 lately, so if the bullpen holds, they get to the avg runs, they’ll be ok this game

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 8:37 PM EDT   0 recs

nothing?

I’ve seen a lot of games this year where we didn’t score 3.

by Pride O' Ireland on Aug 26, 2008 8:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

yea

but that was before we had stability in the lineup

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 8:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Don't forget who's pitching tomorrow

Good thing the bullpen had yesterday off with Andy’s short outing and Ponson up tomorrow

by Pride O' Ireland on Aug 26, 2008 8:41 PM EDT   0 recs

boooo

lets boo the best player on the team!

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 8:42 PM EDT   0 recs

Giambi's got a moustache

so he’s allowed to pop up…

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 8:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Giambi

is awful with RISP this year, but overall he is having a productive season, better than most first baseman this year.

If you went back to Spring Training and said GIambi will play as many games as he has at first base and would have the numbers he has now, every one of us would have signed up for it. It’s hard to get down on him when no one expected him to stay healthy and produce anything more than mediocre numbers.

ARod on the other hand is having an awful season by his standards, and he tries to hit the ball out of the stadium every time he comes up lately. It’s way easier to get frustated when he doesn’t do his job than it is when Giambi doesn’t do his. Plus, he’s also a jackass – which I wouldn’t mind so much if he had 40 plus dingers and 100 plus RBI’s.

End of rant.

I actually like Giambi

Its just hes got this loveable loser thing about him and gets away with things A-rod cant. My point, basically is that I just dont understand some of the outright hatred for A-rod.

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 8:54 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

You said it, brother

But much of the hatred for A-Rod always comes back to his contract. Whether he likes it or not, he’ll have to live with it.

A-Rod doesn’t always use his head, but he is subjected to much higher standard than anyone else. And for good reason, I suppose.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:01 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

The contract and the fact that he is an incredibly huge weirdo are his biggest problems; but there is no one on this team I root harder for. It’s almost like he’s an underdog.

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 9:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It's not hatred

it’s pure frustration.

He developed a reputation as a less than great performer in high leverage situations – a reputation he went a long way towards erasing last year.

Now he’s right back where he was two years ago. We just want him to play like the best player in the game. All too often he looks a lot less than that.

by matthaggs on Aug 26, 2008 9:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm curious

as to why he’s the best player in the game, I suppose it’s all around, because all of the pundits agree he’s not their first choice for 3B or to bat in a clutch situation

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 9:07 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He's the best player in the game

because he’s the most talented. And his career numbers back that up.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

he is the most talented all-around, but I think there’s something to the fact that he’s not the #1 choice in the afforementioned things

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 9:15 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sometimes...

even the best player in the game cannot always live up to his own lofty expectations.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:17 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Alex Rodriguez 2008 vs career.

2008: .312/.402/.590 160 OPS+
Career: .306/.390/.579 148 OPS+

Yep, awful by his standards.

The dude missed 20 games; that results in lower HR/RBI totals.
