PREGAME NOTES:

Yanks are on a bit of a roll having won six of their last eight games.

David Ortiz is just 6-for-29 (.207) against the Yanks this season with a homer, no walks and six strikeouts.

Tim Wakefield is a lifetime 9-17, 5.14 ERA, 1.44 WHIP in 47 games (30 starts) against the Yanks.  He is 0-1, 6.94 ERA, 1.46 WHIP in 2 starts against them in 2008.

Andy Pettitte is a lifetime 16-7, 3.54 ERA, 1.37 WHIP in 31 games (29 starts) against the Red Sox.  He is 1-1, 5.06 ERA, 1.87 WHIP in 2 starts against them in 2008.

Red Sock hitters vs. Pettitte can be viewed here.  Yanks' hitters vs. Wakefield can be viewed here.

JOBA TO THROW THURSDAY:  Joba Chamberlain is expected to throw 45 pitches in the pen on Thursday and the Yankee hierarchy will make an evaluation on his status after his session.

Joe Girardi offered no details but it is possible that Chamberlain could be activated after his session and return to the bullpen so that he can be stretched out again for a move back into the rotation.

Not sure if that's wise, but it seems that the results of this series could make the decision on Chamberlain for them.

It’s now or never. A sweep would be nice.

Don't think that either of us is getting a sweep...

A sweep would be nice

And I think we have to sweep one series or the other to win the wild card, just considering the number of wins it will take to beat the Twins.

Even if they do play well this series

I’d be worried about Toronto this weekend with the whole Boston hangover and all combined with their inability to hit guys like Halladay or Burnett.

It's a damn shame Matsui had that knee problem

because he would have made such an enormous difference in the lineup behind A-Rod instead of Giambi.

One guy is hitting .343 / .450 / .507 in 67 AB with RISP and the other guy is hitting .205 / .352 / .321 in 112 AB with RISP.

I’ll let you figure out who’s who.

Nah....

There have been three really cheap hits already tonight. Two were nothing more than swinging bunts and the other was a weak jam shot that found a hole (Bay).

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nevertheless

Pettitte has to be better than this.

Allowing that hit to Ellsbury was inexcusable. This lineup has 4 hitters in it and he’s already given up 3 runs. Boo.

I don't disagree

But it’s not like Pettitte is getting hammered. I think it’s safe to say that the final score will not be 3-2.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

but you can tell he’s not on his game. The ball isn’t going where he wants it to go.

And the ump isn’t helping any.

Matsui or Abreu? I still want Damon.

by bronxbound on Aug 26, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate to say it.......

but I’m getting the growing suspicion that they migh bring Abreu back next season – which I think would be moronic.

The only way I’d consider bringing Abreu back is if he accepted a one-year deal and was the primary DH.

But that’s obviously not going to happen because there is already a logjam at the position with Matsui, Posada, and sometimes Damon for that role on the depth chart.

I just hope they don’t bring him back. Cut your losses and move on.

How is this all A-Rod's fault?

I’ll never understand all the A-Rod hating.

  • Pettitte didn’t pitch well
  • Giambi started walking back to the dugout when another run scored
  • Abreu threw a lollipop to home plate

Giambi's got a moustache

so he’s allowed to pop up…

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Giambi

is awful with RISP this year, but overall he is having a productive season, better than most first baseman this year.

If you went back to Spring Training and said GIambi will play as many games as he has at first base and would have the numbers he has now, every one of us would have signed up for it. It’s hard to get down on him when no one expected him to stay healthy and produce anything more than mediocre numbers.

ARod on the other hand is having an awful season by his standards, and he tries to hit the ball out of the stadium every time he comes up lately. It’s way easier to get frustated when he doesn’t do his job than it is when Giambi doesn’t do his. Plus, he’s also a jackass – which I wouldn’t mind so much if he had 40 plus dingers and 100 plus RBI’s.

End of rant.

I actually like Giambi

Its just hes got this loveable loser thing about him and gets away with things A-rod cant. My point, basically is that I just dont understand some of the outright hatred for A-rod.

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You said it, brother

But much of the hatred for A-Rod always comes back to his contract. Whether he likes it or not, he’ll have to live with it.

A-Rod doesn’t always use his head, but he is subjected to much higher standard than anyone else. And for good reason, I suppose.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

The contract and the fact that he is an incredibly huge weirdo are his biggest problems; but there is no one on this team I root harder for. It’s almost like he’s an underdog.

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not hatred

it’s pure frustration.

He developed a reputation as a less than great performer in high leverage situations – a reputation he went a long way towards erasing last year.

Now he’s right back where he was two years ago. We just want him to play like the best player in the game. All too often he looks a lot less than that.

I'm curious

as to why he’s the best player in the game, I suppose it’s all around, because all of the pundits agree he’s not their first choice for 3B or to bat in a clutch situation

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's the best player in the game

because he’s the most talented. And his career numbers back that up.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

he is the most talented all-around, but I think there’s something to the fact that he’s not the #1 choice in the afforementioned things

not one of those pitches was in the zone because at the worst, they walk arod and can deal with Giambi, at best, they get Arod to chase a pitch because he knows he’s got to get the job done with more than a walk.

All I said was it does not make sense to me. I will get aggravated curse and scream etc, but I won’t boo my own team. I don’t think it makes you a smarter or better fan to boo your own team. New York and Philly have this rep like the fact that they boo their teams makes them “savvy.” I think it makes them look stupid.

thats a fair point

but captain clutch puts up inferior numbers every year and has been just as ineffective “in the clutch” recently and also gets paid a lot (which is never an issue). I know its different because he’s Jeter, but its not that different.

In fact, I would say fans should be more upset with jeter because you know what he’s done before.

Don't do that shit to me

Just cause I moved out of range of John Sterling’s broadcast’s doesn’t mean I miss the bullshit.

C'mon Arod

Make this worth staying up for…

Yikes I almost predicted this exact scenario.....

Don’t worry
he’ll blow his nose with a 1000 dollar bill and strike out against Delcarmen as the tying run his next time up.

How many times can this guy be defended

thennnn be given a chance to redeem himself thennnn fail again

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm always going to defend him

because there are too many people who don’t. Yankee fans are often moronic.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look its the principle you pay a guy that kind of money he needs to perform.

If he cant in these situations there is a problem you have your opinion I have mine and I respect you for your opinion.

by MedFan on Aug 26, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He does perform

Look at his numbers. People just expect him to be superhuman all the time.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's just it

Yankee fans think money buys victories and championships. It doesn’t. That might help explain no rings since 2000.

The Yanks have several issues that need to be addressed over the offseason. A-Rod is not one of them.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will.

Because guess what? We need him tomorrow and the next day and the next. 10 years worth.

by bronxbound on Aug 26, 2008 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

The whole team will go into Girardi’s office tomorrow and beg him to put Cody Ransom at third.

Indeed

I don’t see the point in trying to tear the guy down for the next decade. That helps nobody, especially the guy wearing #13.

And he’s a Yankee for life no matter what we think of him.

He’s going to break the HR record as a Yankee. He’ll retire a Yankee. And He’ll wear his Yankee cap to the Hall of Fame.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Meh, I don't believe in that hocus pocus

And apparently, he doesn’t either. He wears that number because of Dan Marino – who happens to be my all-time favorite player.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You never saw

saw that clip of Boomer on the CBS football show talking about Peyton Manning (before he won the super bowl) and he said something to effect off “Peyton doesn’t want to be another Dan Marino.” And Marino was sitting on the same panel. Also, Esiason is a huge mets fan/yankee hater.

Very low blow

I know quarterbacks are the field generals, but they can’t do it all by themselves.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not hoping for that.

I was just pointing out the similarities

by Pride O' Ireland on Aug 26, 2008 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think we know what's going to happen next season

He’ll be maligned the entire offseason and he’ll come back in 2009 and win another MVP.

That’s been his MO since his arrival.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 9:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yep

and then he’ll disappoint in 2010. i’d prefer consistent seasons that fall between disappointment and MVP caliber though.

by Travis G on Aug 26, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just a thought

many television/writers/etc…are saying 08 is already the best year in sports i.e. super bowl/wimbledon/U.S. Open/Olympics so wouldn’t a Yankees comeback and World Series in this fashion be the icing on the cake?

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes

but the plane crashes of the Angels, White Sox, Red Sox and Twins would kind of put a damper on all those nice feelings.

Get a few more guys on

and we can boo Arod again in the 9th!!!

Going off memory (which is dangerous), but Cano has crushed a couple of balls against Okajima. Matsui just needs to move the chains.

Don't worry

he’ll come back when they’re 9 games out and throw 115 pitches.

This blows. At least I can find something else to do at night a month earlier than usual.

My recipe for success this offseason if I was able to cook:

Send Girardi packing.

Get Mattingly in here to teach these guys how to hit.

Get Mazzone in here to teach these guys how to pitch.

Get Zimmer back.

by bronxbound on Aug 26, 2008 10:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Girardi ain't getting fired

No chance in hell unless he does something outrageous and completely embarrasses the organization.

But Girardi is somewhat of a choir boy, so I don’t see him turning into Billy Martin overnight.

Ahh the classic reply from Anaconda

I am out of here for the night. Well lets get them tomorrow night. Nice chatting fellas.

by MedFan on Aug 26, 2008 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Classic reply or not

It’s the truth. I’m not naive enough to think they would go through the trouble to hire Girardi last offseason (and subsequent dealings with Torre) and they aren’t going to fire the guy after one season.

Cashman and Hal wanted Girardi and like Girardi and they are clearly running the show.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

While they're at it....

they can get Jeter to give me his black book. The odds are probably about the same.

yanks

havent made the world series since Don Zimmer left and Arod joined. coincidence?

by Travis G on Aug 26, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think I'm gonna repeat

this a lot. But my opinion is : the Yanks will not ever ever ever win another championship with Phony Rodriguez on the team.

by runbrettrun on Aug 26, 2008 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Considering how hard it is to actually win a WS

you are not exactly going out on a limb.

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

baseball started what year 1903?

It’s 2008 that’s 105 years
26 championships
that’s almost 1 every four years so really it would be out of the ordinary for them not to win 17 years

by emille2 on Aug 26, 2008 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Completely different now

Free agency, two rounds of playoffs before you even get to WS, the Wild Card etc. Much more of an even playing field than before when the Yankees were cleaning up and could just go to Oklahoma and scoop up Mickey Mantle.

by seanp23 on Aug 26, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It has nothing to do with A-Rod

It has to do with the lack of pitching over the last several years – although the offense has been the team’s biggest problem in 2008.

The phony stuff gets really old and lame, though.

by anaconda on Aug 26, 2008 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

As if the game wasn’t nauseating enough, he has to have this retarded conversation with Leiter.

by runbrettrun on Aug 26, 2008 10:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs
