This is an awful litany
but does not explain to me why he is so reviled?
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

As the story above mentions, there were several moments during his time here where it seemed like he could have pitched, or at least tried to pitch, but opted not to. This upset his GM, his manager, his teammates, and when word reached them, the fans.
Hideki Matsui could have chosen surgery instead of rehab and skipped the rest of this season, but he opted not to. He worked his ass off to get back here and help the team. Ditto Brian Bruney.
Pavano did not even try to come back on several different occasions.
The only reason he is pitching tomorrow is because he is running out of paychecks. Based on his history, If he had another year left on his deal he would be nowhere near a major league mound this season.
If his seflishness results in strong performances and Yankee wins, then great. But otherwise screw him.
"Well, that kind of puts a damper on even a Yankees win."
