PREGAME NOTES:
Yanks are 6-5 against the Jays this season with 6 games to go after tonight.
Roy Halladay is a lifetime 12-5, 2.88 ERA, 1.14 WHIP in 29 games (27 starts) against the Yanks. He is 9-2, 2.04 ERA, 0.90 WHIP over his last 15 starts against them, including 3 complete games.
Sidney Ponson is a lifetime 7-10, 4.59 ERA, 1.31 WHIP in 19 games (18 starts) against the Jays. He is 3-2, 4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP in 9 starts for the Yanks this season.
Yanks' hitters vs. Halladay can be viewed here. Jays' hitters vs. Ponson can be viewed here.
PAVANO TO START SATURDAY: I can't believe the Yankee rotation issues have come down to this but Carl Pavano has been given the green light over Phil Hughes to start on Saturday night against the Orioles at Camden Yards.
Frankly, if Pavano does miraculously manage to make it through the start in one piece - you'd have to consider it somewhat of a success. There's no two ways about it - this is as desperate as desperate gets and my expectations for Saturday night are about as low as one could imagine.
JOBA THROWS AGAIN: Pete Abe reports that Joba Chamberlain continued his throwing program today and came out of it feeling good.
He is scheduled to throw a 30-pitch bullpen on Saturday but will only throw fastballs and changeups and holding off on breaking balls.
There is still no timetable for his return.

nice job damon
two more terrible defensive plays:
one on a flyball that he assumed abreu could get that he let fall
and he let lind tag to third by not letting abreu who actually has a damn arm catch the ball
damon is a liability in center and should never play there

I'll take Damon and his defense
over Melky in the starting lineup any day.

Well Damon has given up 1 run already tonight...
Let’s see if he can make up for it at the plate
by Pride O' Ireland on Aug 21, 2008 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's got a hit, a walk and two steals already
That’s more production than what Melky did in the month of August before he got sent down.

Ok this how we win.
Sidney needs to throw at someones head…
Then the next inning hopefully roy throws at one of out guys heads then someone needs to get him out of the game.
Just Kidding

we need to find someone who can play centre
because damons cost us at least a run today
i figure we should let matsui go at the end of the year and put damon in left
who doesnt love damons hitting? but who doesnt hate his horrible defense?
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 7:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
halladay is good
well, he’s made jeter look like an idiot twice
and pudge too… why did we ever get him?
oh, and theres another hit that damon shouldve caught
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 7:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I know Melky defenders think he's Torri Hunter out there
but he’s really not. He’s a pretty good outfielder, but he’s not an elite one. And I don’t think he would’ve caught that ball either.
by anaconda on Aug 21, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
damon walked and then took the bounce off his hip… he easily couldve had the ball
we should be packing it in more than we are… we cant even beat the jays… we might as well lose while actually bringing up young pitchers rather than wasting our time with sidney ponson
bring up Hughes and see if Pavano has something in him… these guys could spark the season
MedFan, this is the Yankees, not the Royals. Just because Halladay’s pitching doesn’t mean the game is instantly over. the problem is that pudge doesnt know how to call the game like molina can
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 7:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What does Pudge have to do with it?
Ponson did fine his last three starts with Pudge behind the plate and now it’s Pudge’s fault that Ponson sucked tonight?

nice outing by the three hundred pounder… we’ve already lost to a pathetic team and it’s the third inning

Halladay....
is going to get hammered in the next inning or two

Everybody seems to love Robertson...
But he seems pretty wild to me. Every time he goes in I’m waiting for him to get crushed.
by Pride O' Ireland on Aug 21, 2008 8:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ya, anaconda, i guess youre right that this shouldnt be blamed on pudge
but hes had tons of trouble learning a new rotation

luckily the game is over by now so i can catch the olympics

Spot Roy 5 runs...
time to go to sleep.

Well I think that needs to Sid's last start with us.
Lets see if Phil is for real who is with me on this?
by MedFan on Aug 21, 2008 8:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
im with you, get those young guys going
for the most part, i respect what sid has done for the team but we need to work the young guns

Doc's arm
is going to be cold after that inning, so the yanks should hit him well next inning (hopefully…)
by emille2 on Aug 21, 2008 8:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ehh, I'm ok as long as we don't get behind Boston more than the # of games we have left with them
I think Min. or Chi will falter
by emille2 on Aug 21, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
nah, if ARod is gonna come out and publicly say the team needs to start pressing, then anything can happen because he’s got so much room to talk
by emille2 on Aug 21, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No Igawa
He’s off the 40-man roster now and the team has no plans to ever start him again.
by anaconda on Aug 21, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i'm not kidding Kei...
is 12-5 with 3.42 in SWB this year, WTF?
by eltunagrande on Aug 21, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm well aware of that
But he can’t get major league hitters out. The Yanks have given up on him or he probably would have started Saturday instead of Pavano.
by anaconda on Aug 21, 2008 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i still wouldnt have wanted to give him away for washburn
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 8:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What!?
I would give Igawa away for a bag of dog food.

So Who said Roy's arm was gonna be cold?
Stuff that idea
by MedFan on Aug 21, 2008 8:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well if Sidney performance was this good
There must be some good nightlife in Toronto.

So who is high on Robertson as a great Pitcher?
by MedFan on Aug 21, 2008 8:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Not a great one
But a good one. He’s also 23 years old and has very good stuff. He just needs some seasoning and experience.
Don’t forget – this kid was pitching in
People have to understand that not everyone is Joba. Kids struggle. We have to be patient with them while they take their lumps. The team will be better off for it down the road.

There's no way...
that the last game on Sept 21 at Yankees Stadium is going to be meaningless, nor is the last 3 game set with the Sox. That last series has to mean more than keeping the Sox from getting the wild card from any other team then the Yankees.

So who thinks Girardi has to turn it around next season or start looking for a new job?
by MedFan on Aug 21, 2008 8:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I wish he was looking half way thru this season
by emille2 on Aug 21, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Girardi's job is a safe as Joe Paterno's job
At least for the next couple of years. Let’s not forget that Hank has already exonerated him for their play this season because of the injuries.
by anaconda on Aug 21, 2008 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that’s absurd though. I don’t have any numbers in front of me, but off the top of my head, if the team scored more, we’d have at least the # of games they’re behind in the wild card. Yea ARod was out for a bit, Jeter got hit in the hand, Matsui was out for awhile, but they still have the tools to score more than 2 runs in a game at least 20 of the what 40+ times they’ve done that
by emille2 on Aug 21, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But having an old lineup is a big part of the problem
That’s why they have to let Abreu and Giambi walk no matter what and get younger and more flexible.
by anaconda on Aug 21, 2008 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree 100% about getting younger. Aside from that, like Jeterfan says, you have to hold the players accountable, but then I think if basically the whole team is having a down year, what could be the problem? I don’t know who your first pick for manager was, but the biggest change was Girardi. Ok if one player here one player there was having a down year, but it is alot of players. I don’t know what goes on in a clubhouse, but it’s my belief that that is where the problems began. Someone should be there to pick these guys up after injuries and it obviously isn’t coming from the players (where’s Tino when you need him) and it certainly isn’t coming from the management.
by emille2 on Aug 21, 2008 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I totally agree with you
Girardi looked like a great Manager, but I think they really killed this team when they let Torre go. He was a perfect manager for this team. We didnt know how good we had it, until he was gone.
by MedFan on Aug 21, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I figured that when they let Torre go, they would be ready to put his younger version (Mattingly) in but we just had to choose Girardi who only looks at statistics and plays Cabrera, Christian, and Sexson in the same game and strands Marte until he blows up
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
With Torre at the helm, we would have the focus and motivation to actually the finish the game which is more than I can say for Girardi tonight.
If we’re playing the Angels, you can lose like this but the Jays have Joe Inglett, Marco Scutaro, Matt Stairs and John McDonald. This is pathetic
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly, with injuries, we should still be a playoff team
i know its important to hold the players accountable but one of the key reasons to our horrible hitting is the overmanagement of our lineup
and i agree with anaconda on how we need to get younger
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i dont think girardi can win with this team
its just not working out for him. he overmanages the lineup, bullpen and hasnt got much out of the players.
by jeterfan21 on Aug 21, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Then look at McCutchen for a start...
why is Pavano even getting a shot here? He was good in 2003…it’s been 5 yrs already.
by eltunagrande on Aug 21, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
OK how about Coke...
is he still in the system!
