Return of American Idle

Like a bad case of jock itch, Carl Pavano just won't go away. From BJs to buttocks pulls, ribs, to groins and pretty much everything in between glass Carl has been a zero in New York. Now come reports that he may be returning to the hill in Baltimore this weekend.

Stranger stories have been written about a down and outer who suddenly finds glory, so I'd only be half surprised if in the cool breezes of Baltimore's inner harbor, old Carl channels up his 18-8 masterpiece.

While the popular thing is to pile on Pavano (and I'm certainly guilty of that), the fact is, we desperately need someone, anyone--even Carl to come back uber strong for the rest of the season. He needs it, we need it, and most importantly, the Yankees need it.

I’m not sure there is anything he can do to make the Yankee fans (or even the players) feel good about him, so he has no room for error, but if he can put some W’s up, it’s okay with me.

If Phil’s not ready, they are NOT going to throw him to the wolves. With Pavano, I doubt they care about his mental state or what a bad outing will do to him. People are invested emotionally and mentally in Phil and the future of the franchise but Pavano was a (bad) financial investment and it would be nice to get some (any) return on it.

agreed-

Idle is on a short leash with the fans. Hope for the best, expect the worse on that one… and yeah, Phil will only comeback if they think he’s ready.

I might agree

if this was for one start. But it isn’t. Who ever pitches Saturday will likely be in the rotation for the rest of the year. Whoever they don’t pick will only be here if and when Rasner falters, and/or if Joba doesn’t come back.

The long term choice should pitch Saturday. That should be Hughes. It could be Cashman telling stories, but he is quoted as saying that Hughes “had a bug” on Sunday, which explains how he ran out of gas so quickly. In his first few innings he was a strike throwing machine. Assuming he’s recovered from that, he is the obvious choice.

Hughes is not Kennedy. If he is physically ready, he will be fine in the bigs. And he seems physically ready.

Pavano should be encased in glass and used for absolute emergencies only.

Maybe it’s the way Kennedy sucked, or how Hughes pitched in the beginning of this year (when he was HURT and blind), but it’s amazing how little confidence people have in Hughes.

I mean think about it – YOU WANT CARL FRIGGIN PAVANO TO GET THE BALL OVER HUGHES!!!!! Read that sentence again and let it sink in.

I’d let Hughes pitch left handed first.

I don’t think that’s it. If Phil is not 100 percent, he is a future starter, and his current and future health is important. I couldn’t care less is Carl Pavano gets hit by a car after he pitches.

Phil’s progress back is important to the club and the future of the franchise. Pavano is filler until better times (healthy Phil, healthy Joba in the regular rotation) are upon us.

Precisely ...

Pavano is a piece of spoiled meat. Hughes is prime beef. Look houw the Yankees are treading with Joba right now. If we don’t pull closer and make this a race, we won’t see him until next season. With Pavano, it’s just the opposite. They’d throw him everyday if they could—and if his arm, or ass falls off in the process, big deal.

My point is

maybe Kennedy’s performance is making you gunshy about summoning Hughes.

He had one rocky start during this entire rehab. If it had been his second one instead of his most recent one ,there would be no talk of Pavano.

Nothing I’ve read indicates that Hughes is less than 100 percent, unless he is still sick.

Pavano likely hasn’t faced a hitter who can legally drink since April of 2007!

It’s like you’re assuming that both Hughes and Pavano will get rocked, and you’d rather see Pavano get rocked. Have you no faith in Hughes?

Hughes is a very good pitcher, and he seems to be healthy, and it wasn’t his arm that was injured or required major surgery, so to me it’s patently obvious that he gives the Yankees a much better chance to win Saturday’s game and the rest of the games he’ll start this year than Pavano does.

Pavano might have a better chance for success than IPK, Igawa, or even Rasner, but there’s no way he’s better than Hughes at this stage.

I agree, I don’t care if Pavano throws a zillion pitches, but if he puts the Yankees in a 6-0 hole in the 2nd inning, then yeah, I start caring.

Additionally, the Yankees have to get some sense of what Hughes is capable of giving the team in 2009. The sooner he gets here, the better.

I’m not worried about Phil getting shelled. I’m worried about him being healthy. I’d rather skip him a week than rush him back.

If we’re in a pennant race (and it’s not clear that we are) bring back Hughes and Joba asap but don’t jeopardize his future to avoid Pavano.

He is healthy

and if he wasn’t, what is one more week in the minors going to do to improve upon that?

They should be as careful as possible with Joba, but Hughes has nothing wrong with his arm, and can help this team immensely.

I’d like to see him up again but if there’s any doubt about him, start stupid head pavano.

If he's healthy, pitch 'em

I’m with you. I’d rather see Phil than Carl.
Actually, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see both—especially if Rasner blows tonight against the Jays.

Phil is starting Saturday. Pavanos Rehab assignment isnt over until a week from tmr. We do not need Pavano unless he can swing a bat and knock in some runs. As beat up as we are with our pitching. It has been our backbone all season.

I just received word

that when Carla Pavano was told he’d be starting for the Yankees on Saturday, he jumped for joy. And tore both of his hamstrings. Rehab begins immediately and Carla expects to be ready for Opening Day 2010… so open those checkbooks, pitching-needy teams!

There are lots of ways to diss Carl Pavano

without being sexist. Try and use some of them.

Dara Torres just won three silver medals in swimming at the age of 41. Forty-freakin-one. Don’t equate being useless and injury prone with being a woman.

It will determine the mindset of the organization

depending on who starts (Pavano or Hughes). If it’s Hughes, the Yanks feel they have a chance at WC. If it’s Pavano, they are throwing in the towel for this year and focusing on next. Pavano is a sacrificial lamb whose arm could fall off and neck could break while he turns to watch the balls leave the stadium. Hughes is the future who will be treated like royalty.
