Two Games Down, Two to Go
An unusual Sunday here in Yankeeland: we've got four games to pay attention to. The Yanks won theirs, the Red Sox lost theirs (5 back!). Phil Hughes has thrown 60 pitches (45 strikes, 0BB, 2ER) through 3, while the Rays play at 8 but they're not on Sunday Night Baseball. For Bonus Points, the ChiSox and the Twins both won, bringing a three-way tie to the top of the AL Central and the Wildcard.
I love the fall.
update: Hughes went 3.2, 91 pitches, 63 strikes, 8 hits, 5ER, 4K.

So who pitches Saturday?
Hughes
Igawa
Kennedy
Wright
Aceves
(before anyone says Pavano, he’s not ready)
Unless they can make a waiver deal, it’s gotta be Hughes anyway, no?

I don't know
I really have no idea what they are going to do. Chase Wright has done okay and he’s on the 40-man roster, so maybe they’ll call him up for one start. Aceves isn’t ready and he’s not on the 40-man. No chance with Igawa. Not likely with Kennedy.
How’s your arm?
I used to throw pretty hard (85 MPH) in high school, but I never knew where it was going. But I’d be damn lucky to crack the (70 MPH) plateau now because that was 16-17 years ago.
I don’t even bother including Pavano in any updates regarding reinforcements because I really don’t see him taking the mound this season. And the Yanks might prefer it that way behind closed doors.

I was just coming back here
to note that Pavano pitched 6 innings tonight, threw 88 pitches and only gave up one run on a homerun.
So maybe they’ll consider him. I’d take him over Wright, Kennedy or Igawa.
My pick would be Hughes. They had to have him lined up for Saturday before tonight. Why let one bad night change their plans?

Pavano ...
I think I’m speaking for everyone, but Pavano could throw a no-hitter and I’d not get excited about him pitching for us.

Yeah
he’s been a complete bust, and yeah none of his teammates like him, but he seems pretty close to healthy, and that means he is a better pitcher than Darrell Rasner.
Saturday they will turn to Hughes I think.
But if Rasner stinks tomorrow, and is underwhelming in his next start on Sunday, then they will be forced to turn to Carl (assuming he doesn’t hurt himself between now and then).
New York is the capital of second, third, fourth and seventh chances. If this mope can pitch well down the stretch it would go a long way towards erasing all the badwill.
They are not going to rush Joba back (nor should they), and they will need someone to replace Rasner.
If Pavano gives the Yanks a better chance to win, then give him the ball.
