That's a dream alright

And has zero chance of happening.

People really have to understand that spending money and patching holes with FAs is exactly the reason why this team is in this position.

They will go hard after Sabathia, but my guess is that he’ll be the only real big fish if they land him.

  • K-Rod will never accept a setup role
  • Ben Sheets is way too much of a health risk
  • There will be no interest in Manny Ramirez
  • Given the uncertainty of Posada as an everyday catcher, it’s unlikely they will sign Teixeira
  • Nobody is paying Adam Dunn $20M+

you forgot:

Joba is NOT going back to the bullpen.

otherwise, we’re on the same page.

Can you imagine the defense

of a Dunn-Damon-Matsui outfield. There’s not a player on the list with half the arm for the position, and they wouldn’t cover enough ground either.

to be honest i would NEVER want adam dunn on my team. sheets im indifferent. krod wont setup tho he would be great after MO is retired. i hate manny too so id rather never have him in a yankee uniform. and as great as CC has been i would only enjoy seeing him if he lost 50 pounds. he looks like a slob to me and i just cant stand him. teixeira is awesome though

“DH Manny Ramirez 4yr $18M yr take it or leave it!!!”

If he was looking for that kind of price he wouldnt have gotten traded. Its well known hes shooting for 25 a year, and while he may or may not get that, itl probably be higher than 18.

Well

You can only sign up to 3 type A free agents from other teams, so this is literally impossible.

I love dream teams, though. Delightfully wacky!

Some say he never blinks, and that he roams around the woods at night foraging for wolves... all we know is, he's called Luke Scott.

I believe

it’s 3 or the number of Type As you lose, so if Pudge, Abreu, Giambi, and Pettitte are all type As the Yanks could sign four.

No way.

SP C.C. Sabathia 7 year $18 – $20M yr
SP Chien-Ming Wang
SP Jon Garland 3yr – 4yr $12M yr
SP Ben Sheets 4yr $17M yr
SP Mike Mussina 1- 2yr $11M yr

?

C.C would not be our #1. Wang, despite his injury this season was debated as one of the best pitchers in the Majors for the past 3 seasons. I can see C.C coming over maybe even Ben Sheets if the Yankees go nuts. But I can’t see both.

RP Damaso Marte
RP Jose Veras
RP Edwar Ramirez
RP Joba Chamberlain
SU Francisco Rodriguez 4- 5yr $13-15M yr
CL Mariano Rivera

?

Joba is a starter now, and with potential to be one of the best. Hes not going to the Bullpen. K-rod will never sign to the Yankees, hes doesn’t want to be in the shadow of Mariano. Plus he’ll never be a setup man.

C Jorge Posada
1B Mark Teixeira 6- 7yr 20- $21M yr – Scott Boras sucks
2B Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
SS Derek Jeter
LF Adam Dunn 3- 4yr 20- 25+M yr
CF Johnny Damon
RF Hideki Matsui
DH Manny Ramirez 4yr $18M yr take it or leave it!!

??

Adam Dunn is a joke and is OVERRATED. That’s all I have to say about him. Texiera is going to stay in Anaheim. As for Manny, he would never take 18M on a team where 18M goes out like candy. On top of that, the Yankees will show no interest in acquiring Manny.

Chien Ming Wang is one of the best pitchers in the majors in his last 3 seasons? Says who? He’s put together a DECENT 3.80 ERA and won his games with 6 runs of support on average.

by Charger567 on Aug 17, 2008 5:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But at the end of last season

his career ERA was 3.74, he’d averaged 6.2 IP per start, walking 2.4 men per game (a sign of great control). The list of pitchers who’d been better and more consistent than that from 2005-2007 is a tiny one. Yes, he got a lot of run support, but he also did a great job of pitching well enough to keep the team in the game and staying on the mound.

Until someone else pitches back to back 200 inning seasons, Wang is my ace.

This reminds me

of the Seinfeld episode when George comes up with a way for the Yanks to get Bonds and Griffey (back when both were great players).

All this next year talk is depressing.

Let’s not pull the plug on ‘08 just yet. I still think there’s a shot Tampa will collapse under the pressure of their first pennant race, especially with their schedule. And the injuries are starting to pile up down there too. Percival came out of last night’s game with a knee problem.

They have 6 games left against Boston and 6 against the Yankees. A lot can happen.

A realistic roster that will win us the World Series

Rotation

1 – CC Sabatthia – $25 million/6 years – Without a doubt, the best free agent pitcher on the market since Randy Johnson in 1998/99 and Greg Maddux in 1992/93.
2 – CM Wang
3 – Andy Pettitte – $16 million/1 year, perpetual 1 year contract
4 – Joba Chamberlain
5 – Phil Hughes

The front 4 can pitching 800 innings combined (more than half of the innings a team plays in a year) with a sub-4.00 ERA. I’ll take Pettitte over Mussina because he’s 4 years younger, lefthanded, and more of a strikeout pitcher.

Bullpen

RP – Edwar Ramirez
RP – Jose Veras
CL – Mariano Rivera
?
?
?

Just like this year, the Yankees will take a revolving door approach. Ramirez and Veras have earned their spots for next year. I see Albaladejo, Robertson, Melancon, Bruney, Britton seeing some action next year, and I also suspect the Yankees will sign some “proven veteran” (aka LaTroy Hawkins) as Plan B/Plan C insurance. But there’s no question that having an abundance of cheap, young strike-throwers is the way to build a good bullpen.

Lineup

C – Jorge Posada
1B – Jason Giambi $8 million/1 year OR Adam Dunn $17 million/3 years
2B – Robinson Cano
SS – Derek Jeter
3B – Alex Rodriguez
LF – Johnny Damon
CF – Melky Cabrera/Brett Gardner/Austin Jackson
RF- Xavier Nady
DH – Hideki Matsui

Say what you want about Dunn, but he is good for a .400 OBP and a .500 SLG every year. The fact that he is underrated means you might be able to get him for a relative bargain price.

Statistically, Dunn and Giambi are interchangeable. I’d offer Giambi the one year deal first, and then go after Dunn. It isn’t that hard to find a first basement who can hit.

I think the Yankees have begun shifting from a run-producing team to a run-prevention team. It all starts with the rotation, and essentially the team would have four starters that would be considered aces on many other teams, plus a high strikeout bullpen, and that is really how you win the World Series.

Joba to the pen

Might make sense in light of his injury. If it keeps him healthy, you’d have to think about it. And considering the SP market, where we can get maybe CC and Garland, plus re-sign Moose, and get CMW back…it might make sense. Fill in the back of the rotation with Hughes/IPK/Rasner/whoever else develops in ‘09 (Humberto Sanchez, I’m looking at you.)

by runbrettrun on Aug 15, 2008 2:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Realistic?

Half of the acquisitions in the first scenario made me laugh out loud. I say no to Manny, Dunn, Sheets, K-Rod. Garland I’m indifferent on and even Sabathia scares me at nearly 3 bills. The one guy I really want on this list is Teixeira and who knows if we will even have room for him with Posada’s future behind the plate uncertain.

I think the Yankees need to figure something out in CF too. Melky ain’t cutting it and I’d much rather leave Damon in LF.

by Pride O' Ireland on Aug 15, 2008 2:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WHY???

Why is everyone on CC’s jock? It is hit or miss with the guy. Might I remind everyone he had a 3-5 record and a almost 6 ERA with the Indians before going to the inferior National League. I dont think he’s worth 20 mil a year. Having a strong lefty is nice but I dont believe in him. How does the proprosed trade for Santana at the beginning of the year look now? Especially considering IPK and Melky were in the deal.

Joba is a full fledged starter now and he’s going to be great. I didnt agree with taking him from the pen at first but now I’m glad we did. K Rod only has a couple more good years in him and he will fall off guaranteed. He is not Mo he will never be as good as Mo and he doesnt deserve Mo money. No pun intended.

Adam Dunn sucks. .240 hitting garbage. I hate Manny but would take him in a minute especially with the shitty hitting I’ve seen this year. Not to mention he hates the Red Sox now. Which is always good. I like the Texeira move that would be great I wanted him last year.

by krizzwhite on Aug 15, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mind if I ask where in the world you got those stats? CC was 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA. It’s not great, but his team was out of contention from the beginning. Being 13 games out of first place doesn’t motivate many players.

Please explain to me what your basis is on K-Rod falling off? If you look at their careers, they are shockingly similar to this point. The difference is that K-Rod walks hitters, but dominates them to compensate, while Mo is less dominant but throws more strikes. I can’t guarantee that K-Rod will continue to match Mo season for season, but you can’t guarantee that he will suddenly fall off for no particular reason. Baseball doesn’t work like that.

Agreed on the rest.

Adam Dunn doesn't suck

His batting average is .240 and his OBP is .380. Batting average doesn’t mean jack s&#!

CC had a 3.93 ERA with Cleveland before the trade. He had 4 bad starts at the beginning of the year. His won-loss record is jack s$!% just like batting average is. He’s average 7 innings a start over the full year, with an ERA under 3.00 over the full year.

The proposed trade for Santana still looks as bad as it did during the winter. CC and Santana are essentially the same, salary wise and skill wise. So, if you want an ace lefthander, all other things being equal, is it worth giving up 3 young players just to get him a year earlier???

Spend the money wisely

NYY needs to spend their money wisely and not commit multiyear deal to risky free agents.

1) SP
I wouldn’t want Garland/Sheets. If we can sign CC for reasonable amount like $15M per year, he is worthy it as he can eat up some innings at least. I just hope Hughes can finally come through in 2009. Wang/CC/Joba/Hughes/5th SP is not that bad. I would only bring back Moose on 1 yr. contract.

2) Bullpen
Forget about K-Rod. The bullpen has not been a problem, so don’t overpay anyone.

3) IF
Our 1B for 2009 is Posada whether you like it or not. He will be a liability as a cather next year with the shoulder injury. Other than that, NYY is pretty much set. Giambi is finally off the payroll although he showed some power this year.

4) OF
I would not bring back Abreu, but bring back Nady. Since Matsui/Damon need off days here and there and that they can DH, I am intrigued by Manny as he can still hit. If NYY can sign him for 3 yr/ $40M range, he is still worth it as NYY needs at least one more power bat to protect A-Rod. Posada/Matsui/Nady, etc cannot protect A-Rod. Manny can do that.

Let’s not give up on 2008 as there is a slight possibility to grab a wild card spot.
