Is Hank packing it in?
"I'm not writing off this season," the team's co-chairman said Tuesday. "They're trying hard to win. There's only so much you can do. They're not supermen."
..."I think it's very simple, we've been devastated by injuries. No team I've ever seen in baseball has been decimated like this. It would kill any team," Steinbrenner said."
Read it here
Last year we lost 3/5ths of the opening day starting rotation. Made the playoffs.
This year we lost 3/5ths of the opening day starting rotation. Probably not going to make the playoffs.
Strange to hear a Steinbrenner make such statements, though, isn't it? Felt like the twilight zone when I read it.

I don't disagree with him
but some things really don’t need to be said to the media. Hank is an embarrassment to the Yanks.

...
No matter what you say, the Yankees HAVE been devastated by injuries this year, worse than any other. If any other team lost there ace so early in the season they would not even be in the race.

[cough/Beckett back issues before season even started/cough]
Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

Chien Ming Wang is not an ace; Mike Mussina is an ace. Wang has relied on a devastating offense to win games, his ERA and SO’s are both no better than average. Never use injuries as an excuse for losing; every team has them and you don’t really have it any worse than the Red Sox or Rays leading you.

You are wrong
Moose is not an ace – at least not anymore. How can you call someone an “ace” when the vast majority of Yankee fans believed he was finished after such a poor 2007?
As great as Moose has been this season, he’s a guy who has completely overachieved this season and is a prime candidate for a steep decline next season.
You can define the word “ace” any way you want – but the fact of the matter is that Wang has been their best starting pitcher since 2005 so that makes him the Yankee “ace.”

I can call Mussina an ace because over the course of his 18 year career, his average yearly stats are better than any season Wang has had. Mussina’s numbers since 2005 have been somewhat similar to Wang’s; the differences are that Wang has more wins (thanks to 7 runs support per game), and that Mussina pitches well in BIG games. Wang’s post season ERA is 7.98 in 4 starts; Mussina’s ERA is an Ace-like 3.42.
When Red Sox fans thought Beckett was all hype after a season equally horrible to Mussina’s ‘07, he was still our ace in 2007 when he made his come back. Mussina is pitching JUST AS WELL as Beckett did when he competed for the Cy Young.

I'm a baseball fan first, so please don't give me any lip service ;-)
I saw Hank’s comments this morning. I think his words are extremely sincere and he’s just telling it like it is. Sure, perhaps the players and fans “don’t” want to hear them because it sounds as if he’s given up on the current season, but as a baseball fan I really like his attitude about next year. Sure, anyone can talk about next year but I believe the guy is gonna get what he wants be it in the form of big talent and / or another World Series championship.
Look, I love the METS and I know how much YANKS and METS fans are supposed to hate each other, but if there’s one club I’m tired of seeing win, it’s the damned RED SOX. Personally I miss the arrogance and killer mentality and ability of the Bronx Bombers.
Like I said, I’m a baseball fan first. Hank basically stated fact. I just hope the players understand that and keep busting their a$$.

Chicks dig the long ball (especially late in the game/series when you aren't supposed to hit it out)!

Hank seems to lack the knowledge of baseball history (or current events)
Looking at this page: http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/injuries
The Yankees have 12 players injured in one way or another right now.
The Mets have had more injuries, currently in the hunt for the NL East or the Wild Card.
Their are a ton of teams with only a few less injuries, like the Dodgers (9), Cardinals (8), Phillies (8), and Marlins (11), who are in the hunt for their division or for a Wild Card spot.
Even if it is because all of those teams are in the NL, the Yankees used to have a strategy that would help them get past injuries. It is called MONEY. The Yankees should gone the internal building route long before the rest of the MLB started catching up to them, but now they are stuck trying to decide whether to rebuild or reload.
Don't question my choice of teams, or I will have to go all troll on you.

It helps to play in the NL East or West
If the Yankees were in either division, they’d be in first place or close to it.
They can’t control whether the other teams in their division are good or crappy.

This assumes
you’d build the same team if you were in a different division. This is a fallacy. You build you’re team according to the atmosphere you’re in.

We have the most profit
of anyone in the game. For us to use injuries as an excuse is pathetic. Hank should man up and say they’ve made some bad decisions that resulted in a lack of depth. Every team has injuries – the Yanks have the money to overcome them.

Money and spending doesn't translate to wins
Yankee fans should know that better than anyone since 2000.

Obviously
you have to be SMART about it, too. Kinda like Stick Michael was in building the “dynasty” team of the late 90s. Cash needs to replicate that kind of club.

This is just allowing Girardi to whine about injuries and how players aren’t performing.
We might as well pack it in if Girardi puts out lineups like he did a couple nights ago.
